Two friends and I drove over 5 hours to explore the Mono Lake area. Since we were just spending one night, as soon as we got there we couldn’t waste any time so we went to our first location. I took this photo at sunset, there weren’t much movement in the water and the skies weren’t as pretty as we expected. I’m happy with the outcome from this, though. Mono lake is an incredible place to go and snap some photos.

Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by Sir Antony Gormley.

It consists of 100 cast iron figures facing across Liverpool Bay (at the mouth of the RiverMersey) towards the Welsh Hills ; above is just one of the one hundred identical sculptures.

Mono Lake (/ˈmoʊnoʊ/ MOH-noh) is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.

This desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp that thrive in its waters, and provides critical nesting habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp and blackflies (that also feed on the shrimp).

The human history of Mono Lake is associated with its productive ecosystem. The native Kutzadika'a people derived nutrition from the pupae of the alkali flies that live in the lake. When the city of Los Angeles diverted water from the lake, it lowered the lake level, which imperiled the migratory birds. The Mono Lake Committee formed in response and won a legal battle that forced Los Angeles to partially restore the lake level.

View of the southern tufa in Mono Lake, California. Tufa are sedimentary rocks formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals. I guess these formed when the lake was higher, but don't know for sure.

Got there just before the sun went down over the mountains to the left. Nice illumination, but not a single cloud.

The Shots:

- ISO 100, 10mm, f18 at 1/25, plus a -2 and +2 shots.

HDR:

- Used HDR to bring out detail on the rocks in the shadow.

- Photomatics details enhancer using the painterly effect, reducing temperature and increasing micro contrast.

Photoshop:

- Surface blur on the sky (15 minutes on my machine), but Photomatix leaves a dirty sky.

- Nik Color Efex Sunshine filter, which gives you 7 settings to add sunshine to your image.

- Nik Color Efex Pro Contrast with color cast correction on 0 to not undo the Sunshine effects.

- Tiny bit of Nik Color Efex Tonal Contrast.

- Nik Color Effex Darken/Lighten Center to lighten the pool in the middle.

Tufas at Mono Lake's "South Tufa" area in the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve on an absolutely mesmerizing evening. The color surrounding Mono Lake on this evening was magical. Especial when the sun's rays managed to escape the cloud cloud cover for a short few minutes as the sun was heading for sunset. DSC_7878

Displaying at old warden England. The aircraft has been refurbished and repainted, by Air Leasing Ltd, in the colours of one of Hawker’s Sea Fury prototypes coded SR661, which was a modified Fury Mk.II with a tail hook fitted, but without the folding wings included on subsequent production Sea Fury’s. The aircraft is currently based at North Weald Airfield, Essex, UK.

Clear sky, cool blue water at Mono lake.

I just like something about a desaturated GSD in the snow.

Thanks for Viewing.

END PROJECT

During WWII, the US Navy used Mono Lake for testing propellers and other navy components. Here is a relic of a Navy submarine that has almost turned to rust and corrosion deposits. This was the US Navy Black Sand Fly (SS 901). Fortunately, when this submarine went aground, no hands were lost, no feet either.

;>)

Actually, the US Navy did use Mono Lake as a propeller testing ground during WWII, however, this is an image of the natural tufa that only looks like a submarine.

Black and white version of a shot taken at Lochondorb I posted a couple of days back.

This was the HDR version that I wasn't happy with - the colours looked too garish and a bit unrealistic (even after desaturating).

I'm happier with this version. I need to work on my mono processing a wee bit so it was good practice.

Mono Lake, Nevado. Pano of the famous rock formations. The sunset was not wonderful this evening, but I managed to get a little color in the sky.

Took this shot a couple of weeks ago with low set tripod, Tried in mono, adjusted red blue green in aperture to better effect ;-)
