The tufas of Mono Lake are formed through some interesting chemistry. Simply put, ground water containing calcium flow into the bottom of the lake where it meets the alkali salts of the lake. Together these two precipitate and the tufa towers slowly build up over the years. All of this happened under water. In 1941, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power started draining the water flowing into the lake, causing the water level to drop and exposing the tufa. Without the lake water, the tufa cannot repair itself and thus have weathered away. Now the lake is now slowly filling up again based on conservation efforts. Sometimes in the future, the tufas will once again return to it's watery home and naturally be repaired.
