"Riawena" is a wonderfully stylised Streamline Moderne Art Deco Villa in the Melbourne suburb of Thornbury. Its name is taken from the Australian Aboriginal word for "fun" or "sport", which is an unusual choice in the 1930s, when so many people were naming their houses after English or American places.
Standing on the corner of a busy main thoroughfare and a much quieter side street, this well proportioned stand alone villa is extremely large and sprawling, with its original garage next to it behind a high wall. The clean uncluttered lines of the house, the speed lines around the pedement of the rounded portico, feature bricks in geometric patterns and the overall low slung design of the house are very Streamline Moderne in design.
The whole property is surrounded by a low fence with plain pillars and wrought-iron swirls inserts and a gate featuring a geometric Art Deco pattern.
The tree in blossom in this photograph is a prunus; a genus of trees and shrubs, which includes the plums, cherries, peaches, apricots and almonds. This is an ornamental variety, which burst into blossom almost a month before usual owing to an unusually warm spell of weather just prior to the photograph being taken.

Although not famous for its Art Deco architecture, the provincial Victorian city of Ballarat, which was established between the 1860s and 1880s when the area was at the centre of a gold rush, does have some fine examples of interwar and post war architecture when the gold boom was replaced with wealth generated through grazing and agriculture.
These wonderful Streamline Moderne red and brown brick flats with rounded balconies and Functonalist windowframes achieve the refreshingly sleek style that was popular in the mid to late 1930s. Unlike many Art Deco buildings which focussed on angular detail, Streamline Moderne buildings often placed emphasis on rounded edges, as though they were standing up against a great wind. The rounded concrete rendered balcony edges are prime examples of such architectural features. Aside from these and a small amount of feature brickwork, the detail on these flats is minimal.

The former Katz Drug Company Store at the intersection of Main St. at Westport Road is considered to be one of Kansas City’s best examples of early 20th century American architecture. With its combination Art Moderne and Art Deco styles, the building is described in the December 1982 nomination form for National Register of Historic Places as a “masterpiece” in design (“South Side Historic District,” Sec 7, p. 4). This image shows the clock tower on the building's southeastern corner.
It opened in 1934 and was created by KC-based architect Clarence Kivett during the early years of his remarkable career. Later in his career, Kivett designed landmarks such as Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and the Truman Sports Complex (where Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums are located).
The store was part of the Katz Drug Company, a retail chain operated by Isaac (“Ike”) and Michael Katz. The Katz brothers are among the more famous of Kansas City’s many 20th-century entrepreneurs, having built a sizeable empire of drugstores from the ground up. After starting with some modest newspaper and fruit stands in the West Bottoms in the 1910s, they expanded their operations by opening several “cut-rate” drug and sundry stores in KC’s central business district.
By 1934, it was time for the Katz brothers to move their company upward and outward. The building shown here was their first store outside of the CBD and along Main St., one of the city’s most important and fastest growing commercial thoroughfares. It also represented the beginning of Katz’ continuous campaign of corporate expansion well beyond Kansas City. In 1981, the Katz Drug Company was sold to and integrated into the Skaggs pharmacy chain.
Through a series of corporate evolutions and loop-de-loops, the store became a Skaggs, then an Osco, and most recently, a CVS. The parent company closed it in 2006; it was still vacant at the time I took this image in 2013.
French postcard for Samson moderne (dir. unknown, Pathé frères 1908). Théâtre Pathé Grolée, Lyon.
On the fairground an unknown young man manages to conquer the wrestling champion. When after a series of adventures he is imprisoned he breaks down the walls like a modern Samson. Returned home his wife celebrates him with wine but is jealous of his force, so like a modern Delila she cuts his hair off in his sleep. Awakened, the man has lost his hair and his strength.

German collector card in the Moderne Schönheitsgalerie Series by Ross Verlag, second series, no. 221 (of 300). Photo: Radio Pict. Corp. Adolphe Menjou and Katharine Hepburn in Morning Glory (Lowell Sherman, 1933). The card was a supplement to 'Edelzigarette' (precious cigarette) Kurmark.
Suave and debonair American actor Adolphe Menjou (1890-1963) with his trademark waxy black moustache was one of Hollywood's most distinguished stars and one of America's 'Best Dressed Men'. He started as a matinée idol in the silent cinema in such classics as Ernst Lubitsch's The Marriage Circle (1924). His sound films included Morocco (1931) with Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper, A Star is Born (1937), and Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory (1957) with Kirk Douglas. In 1931, he was nominated for an Oscar for The Front Page (1931).
Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) was an indomitable American stage and film actress, known as a spirited performer with a touch of eccentricity. She introduced into her roles a strength of character previously considered to be undesirable in Hollywood leading ladies. As an actress, she was noted for her brisk upper-class New England accent and tomboyish beauty.
