The little mermaid pinup! This was actually a paid gig, and the client let me use it in my port. If I get permission, I'm going to post a before-and-after. She wanted to recreate a tattoo as a surprise gift, so turnaround from planning to handing off prints was less than a week. Again, this is not for sale or re-editing into mashups or whatever...

The anchor is stock I purchased specifically for this shot. We printed off the tattoo and the anchor for reference during the shoot and she held a big cardboard tube while perching on a stool.

I put her friend/MUA to work doing timed hair-flips with a long wooden dowel. We put the dowel under her hair, I'd count down, and MUA would quickly slide the dowel back and out of frame. The final image is a composite of 4 different hair shots.

If you were curious, the mermaid tail was made by the client out of lycra. I can't imagine how much of a pain it would have been to actually photoshop a whole tail on there. If she hadn't sewn that together, I was going to use a satin sheet and shop-clips!

Lighting. I used a pair of alien bees in shoot-through umbrellas behind and to either side of the model aimed mostly at the backdrop and just a little bit of spill to give her a rim-light on her body. The key light was a gridded stripbox, and there was a hairlight almost directly above and far enough behind that it didn't light up her nose. The floor was white, so there was a lot of reflection there to lighten the shadows and give a bit of rim-light under her tail there.

When you come to a beach at a local Oklahoma lake in the summer as a mermaid, it is hard to go unnoticed.

lilyrose_fishes is a magical creature. I just posted a picture of her as a fairy from last weekend, this weekend she's a mermaid.

I'm still reveling in the joy of photographing mermaids from yesterday. So magical!

Little Mermaid cupcakes for a fifth birthday party for a little friend of my daughter's.

Of course I do love making (and admiring) cupcakes that are beautiful little works of art (decorated with fondant flowers and decorations that take hours to make), but sometimes a cupcake should simply be cute, colorful, and topped with sprinkles! =)

Thanks for looking. I appreciate feedback!

Between April - October 2022 Chatsworth parkland played host to 12 sculptures from the USA Burning Man festival. This is normally held annually in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.

The UK exhibition featured 8 original Burning Man sculptures and 4 new works created on site with the help of visitors, local community groups and a school over the course of the year. This process also happens in the U.S.

One of my favourites from the exhibition is Coralee by May, one of the participatory works.

Dana Albany comes from the Bay Area of the U.S. Many of her works use recycled materials, so it's not surprising that this work contains cogs, bells, mosaic tiles and many other scraps collected locally and donated by the Chatsworth estate. She worked with children from Spire Junior school to build it on site. The mermaid is inspired by the folklore surrounding the Mermaid's Pool in the High Peak.
