Occasionally I find one of these washed up on the beach. I used to think it was part of some kind of sea plant but it's actually an amazing nursery for embryos of certain fish. This type of egg case is also known as a mermaid's purse. I believe this one is from a Big Skate. It can contain several embryos. Normally, the case would be anchored at the sea floor and the babies would develop for nine months before hatching!
This one was heavy as if it contained fluid but I couldn't tell whether anything was alive inside. Not very likely, but I carefully placed it back into the ocean.
My 6-foot leash is in the picture for some kind of size reference. The case was larger than my entire hand.

Located inside Saltery Bay Provincial Park is Mermaid Cove where we camped for a few days to enjoy the natural beauty of the BC coastline. This area provided many wonderful photo opportunities.
Early in the morning when the birds are singing and the day is just starting is the best time to pick up the camera and enjoy these peaceful surroundings. I had the cove all to myself and loved exploring the many breathtaking vistas this little cove had to offer.

The figurehead of the boat called "Freedom" that was moored in St. Augustine is a mermaid. It's small and unobtrusive, and in the bright sun, I didn't even notice it until I got home and began processing my photos. I think she's quite beautiful.
I'm through the biggest part of the Labor Day sale, but still having tests done for my cataract surgery later this month, so I'm still running a little behind. Will catch up as I can!

The Mermaid is a sculpture by Icelandic artist Nína Sæmundsson (1892-1965). It was first placed in Tjörnin, the lake in downtown Reykjavík, in 1959, but it received harsh criticism in the press and a few months later, on New Year's Eve, it was blown up by explosives. Nína was reportedly heartbroken by this unprecedented act of vandalism, despite having had a long successful carreer. Nína was the first Icelandic woman to make sculpting a full-time carreer, while she was also a painter. She studied in Copenhagen and Rome, but most of her productive years she lived and worked in the United States, including in Hollywood, where she was hired to make busts and portraits of celebrities. The bombing of the Mermaid is a crime that was never solved, but much later a another copy of the statue was found in the US and was put in the same place as its ill-fated sister in 2014, more than half a century later; a fitting memorial to a pioneering artist.

One of the most famous monuments in Warsaw, standing on The Old Town Marker Square :)
The Warsaw Mermaid - statue on Old Town Market square in Warsaw. It was the first monument of the Warsaw coat of arms and had an influence on the later images of the Warsaw Mermaid and popularized her figure among the inhabitants and visitors of the city. The mermaid appears in several Warsaw legends. All of them assigned her the role of the patron and protector of the city. The sculpture in Warsaw's Old Town Square was designed by Varsovian sculptor Konstanty Hegel. Originally (1855–1928) and now (since 2000) it stands in the marketplace. At other times, it was moved to different places in Warsaw. In 2008, the original sculpture made of bronzed zinc was taken from the market for maintenance work. The sculpture was in a very poor condition due to mechanical damage and numerous acts of vandalism. The repaired original was transferred to the Museum of Warsaw, and replaced with a copy of made by the Jacek Guzera foundry in Dąbrowie near Kielce.

Pomnik Syreny – monument znajdujący się na Rynku Starego Miasta w Warszawie. Był on pierwszym pomnikiem warszawskiego herbu i miał wpływ na późniejsze wizerunki warszawskiej Syreny oraz upowszechnił jej postać wśród mieszkańców i osób odwiedzających miasto. Syrenka jest bohaterką kilku warszawskich legend. Wszystkie wyznaczają jej rolę patronki i opiekunki miasta. Syrenka na warszawskiej Starówce została zaprojektowana przez warszawskiego rzeźbiarza Konstantego Hegla. Pierwotnie (1855-1928) oraz obecnie (od 2000) stoi na rynku. W międzyczasie była kilka razy przenoszona w inne miejsca w Warszawie. W 2008 roku oryginalna rzeźba wykonana z brązowanego cynku została wycofana z rynku do prac konserwacyjnych. Rzeźba była w bardzo złym stanie z powodu uszkodzeń mechanicznych i licznych aktów wandalizmu. Naprawiony oryginał został przekazany do Muzeum Warszawy i zastąpiony kopią wykonaną przez odlewnię Jacka Guzera w Dąbrowie k. Kielc.

For any of you visiting or photographing Rye, Mermaid Street has one advantage above all other streets hereabouts - it doesn't allow parking of any sort!
My experiment of painting with different types of teas and inks has been turbulent and unpredictable. Pigments from the flowers of the herbal teas changed color quickly. Blue Moorish Mallow remained light purple and gray after drying. The background should be soft like on old century paper. It turned bright yellow - I accidentally dipped the brush in the anti-fever tea I was drinking. I invented the shapes of sea animals in order to get closer to my original idea of the Mermaid.

I've been sad I couldn't go to the mermaid parade in NYC on Coney Island again this year...but, unfortunately it always comes at the worst time-end of my school year. This is from a couple of years back but is a keeper.
