This was the first revenue earning train the loco had worked for 53 years and it had been a long time in the waiting. Also it was such a relief to see it in its proper livery after David Smith had teased us all by painting it black earlier in the summer!

The loco was rebuilt in 1957, and withdrawn in September 1966, and ended up at Woodham Brothers scrapyard, at Barry. It was later rescued, but has never been restored, and is still (2015) 'in storage' at the Colne Valley Railway.

Making a rare sight in the South West and in typical weather for this summer, Southern Railway rebuilt Merchant Navy class, 35028 'Clan Line', makes good speed up the steep climb through a very damp Torre Station whilst hauling the 16.50 Kingswear-Bristol-Temple-Meads 'Torbay Express' railtour.

To commemorate 50 years (to the day) of main line preservation running, a commemorative special train ran from London Victoria to Bath on 27 April 2024. The loco had just emerged from a heavy overhaul and had undergone a few test runs in the previous week or so. On a cold and damp morning, the train approaches Byfleet and New Haw at around 75mph. The train was accorded the rare honour for steam of the fast line from Wimbledon all the way to Worting Junction.

This obelisk is a memorial to those lost while serving in the Merchant Navy during both world wars. Unveiled in late 2010 by Princess Anne, it sits by the final section of the Water of Leith, close to the Port of Leith, where doubtless a number of those men would have sailed from.

The memorial is covered in small sculptures from Powderhall Bronze in Leith, designed by Jill Watson. Some on the face of the obelisk show maritime scenes, such as trade routes,

Around the entire piece there's a small ledge with these tiny figures depicting everyday scenes from life in the merchant navy, from officers plotting navigation to the ship's cook carrying a large pot (while a hopeful dog looks on).

"Eternal Father, strong to save,

Whose hand does bind the restless wave,

Who bidst the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!"

(The Sailor's Hymn, William Whiting)

Leaving Pokesdown with a Bournemouth to Waterloo service in 1965.

The remoteness of steam on the Brighton Mainline; the improbability we'd see a Bullied and the extreme improbability of it being Clan Line, meant that I had to pop out yesterday morning and evening to snap Dad/Granddad's loco hauling a steam excursion to Bath/Bristol (as far as Salisbury anyway) ... the weather was still gloomy and raining before 8am but we had an overhead full moon at 10:40pm... making use of my 1.8 'nifty fifty' at f/2.2 to get some light ... gave a brighter result than Monday evening's attempt with Braunton in the rain. Two Bulleids at speed passing through Wiveslfield in the evening was something special. Whilst Braunton was accelerating from a stop at Burgess Hill, so probably at about 40mph. There was no hindering Clan Line on Saturday as she emerged from the darkness, the middle-C whistle breaking the silence as it emerged into the station lights... powering through, at at least 60mph would be my guess.... some of the unaware bystanders were quite awed by the spectacle... something I suspect they'll remember for some time.

Images taken with camera quite wide open.. ISO pushed to between 16000 and 32600 but AI noise cancelling in photoshop is superb if not overused. The night image of Clan Line was only lightly AI-Noise reduced, so I may give it another go at some point. It'll do for now.

Immaculate as ever, Bulleid Merchant Navy Class Pacific No. 35028 'Clan Line' departs from platform 20 of the old Waterloo International station, but now in use with SouthWest Trains, working 'The Railway Children Special' charity charter to London Victoria via Shalford on 4th June 2015. The locomotive was deputising for Tornado, following the delayed completion of its overhaul. Clan Line herself will be withdrawn for overhaul at the end of June 2015.

Despite signalling problems and disruption at London Waterloo, 35028 "Clan Line" makes a superb sight as she strides through the cutting before Surbiton on the fast line, bound for Bournemouth.

Really glad to have nailed this shot and extremely happy to see this very special engine back on the mainline once again. Welcome back Clan Line!
