Taking part in the Swanage Railway's Strictly Bulleid II event, 35018 "British India Line" leaves Corfe Castle working the 14:30 Swanage to Norden. 35018 visited courtesy of West Coast Railways and provided a rare opportunity to photograph the loco with green mk 1 carriages instead of the maroon ones that it is usually seen with in more recent times.

Clan Line has the secret of eternal youth! Seen here at Kent House Station in 1996 with the Crystal Palace TV mast in the background. This is about the right position that I would have been able to see it from my infant class room, down the embankment on the right in the glorious days of steam. Fishguard Cenotaph, Remembrance Sunday.

The following day, Monday 10th November, was also the 81st anniversary of the loss of the Empire Wold with all hands, including my great uncle David Morris. They had set out from Iceland to assist a convoy which had been attacked by a U-Boat but were overwhelmed by the storm conditions. When they failed to return it was assumed they had been torpedoed too but recently (2018) the wreck was found and that theory was disproved.

Following heavy frosts and freezing conditions, Sunday 1st December brought a third consecutive day of clear blue skies over the Cumbrian Fells.

Steaming to the races… Steaming by train to the National Hunt Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse was an odds-on favourite for both punters and the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Steam Railway from 13th - 16th March.

Hundreds of race-goers jockeyed for position on the platform before they saddled up for the 35-minute journey from GWSR’s home station at Toddington to the station at Prestbury Park.

For many punters it was not a spur-of-the-moment decision; they return year after year to start the festival with a fizz and beat the traffic in vintage carriages hauled by a fine thoroughbred steam locomotive.

Providing the horsepower for the At The Races charters were: 4-6-0 Manor class No. 7820 Dinmore Manor; 4-6-0 Modified Hall class No. 7903 Foremarke Hall; and 4-6-2 rebuilt Merchant Navy class No. 35006 Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co.

A turbine at Aberdeen Bay wind farm has been out of action since early February due to a possible “lightning strike”.

Swedish wind developer Vattenfall confirmed last night that one of its eleven turbines was damaged, adding that the structure has been offline for more than six weeks.

The manufacturer MHI Vestas said it was unable to “confirm the cause at this stage”.

But a source close to the project claimed the damage to the turbine was the result of “a lightning strike”.

The £330 million Aberdeen Bay wind project, also called the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), is home to some of the world’s most powerful turbines.

Storm winds which battered Scotland in mid-January averaged up to 67mph in the north-east, causing the 262 foot rotor blades to hit a top speed of 192mph.

Kevin Jones, head of the EOWDC, said: “The damage was discovered by technicians on a routine inspection on 1 February.

“As a precautionary measure we closed the turbine down.

“The cause of the damage will be investigated by manufacturer MHI Vestas Offshore Wind.

“The offshore works, which involve the replacement of the blade, are weather dependent, but are currently scheduled to take place over one week starting 22 March 2019.

“The rest of the wind farm is operating normally.”

Part funded with an EU grant of €40 million, the EOWDC project tests and demonstrates the latest offshore wind technology.

Vattenfall opened the facility in September last year, installing two 8.8 megawatt (MW) turbines and nine 8.4MW versions of the MHI Vestas V164 model.

The wind firm claims one turn of the turbine blades can power an entire house for a day.

Scottish wind farm campaigner, Graham Lang, described the situation as “a bad start” for the deployment of the Aberdeen Bay project.

He added: ““Wind turbines being struck by lightning is common.

“Turbines are magnets for lightning which is why they are fitted with conductors to transfer the energy to the ground but they can cause significant damage. Blades can explode; generators and control system electronics can incinerate.

“The repair of lightning damage can be dangerous and expensive.

“Repairs are usually done while the blade is still attached to the turbine and that seems to be the plan with the turbine off Aberdeen.”

As a tribute to a major force in main line steam touring, John Farrow, who died recently, the Railway Touring Company organised a main line tour in his memory. This involved Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35028 'Clan Line' on a duty away from its usual 'Belmond Pullman' workings, and also saw an unusual pathing down the fast line from Woking to Basingstoke. In January of 2020, I was in Yokohama to film an episode of the programme I present for NHKWorld: 'Journeys in Japan'.

Usually, I travel far away in Japan to make these progs. So, doing on 20mins from home was great as it allowed me to learn a lot more about a city that is already very familiar to me.

I particularly loved meeting Captain Norio Kanaya of the Hikawa Maru, the ship moored alongside Yamashita Park. It was during his last month as Captain.

In its time, this sailing ship was state of the art, with a riveted steel frame and its wooden outside clad in copper sheeting. Copper cladding would prevent barnacles and algae from attaching to the underside of the ship and thus slow it down.
