During a really enjoyable small break in the Cotswolds, it was a great and massively appreciated surprise seeing 35006 "Penisular & Oriential SN & Co" in action during the Wartime Weekend on the GWSR. The "Merchant" is seen at Cheltenham Racecourse after its journey from Toddington.

Bulleid Pacific No.35018 "British India Line" works the returning Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express past Newbiggin. A location that seems to deliver a good result whatever the weather.
'Clan Line' on its familiar stamping ground of the Surrey Hills, but working a train from Victoria via Oxford and Reading back to Victoria. Near-horizontal rain precedes 'Storm Dennis' as the train starts its descent from Betchworth summit (300 feet) towards Reigate.

A filthy unidentified Southern Merchant Navy Bulleid pacific shoots through Basingstoke station with an express from the west. Basingstoke loco shed looms in the background. Neil recorded 35006 "Peninsular & Oriental S.N.Co & 35026 "Lamport & Holt Line" at Basingstoke so it is one of these two. He is pretty sure this is 35026.

Merchant Navy class pacific 35015 receives an oiling before working a Bournemouth West to Waterloo train on 7 April 1953. Rebuilt five years later, it would, along with 35002, be the first pair to be withdrawn, in February 1964. They were also the only members of the class to end up in Yorkshire, scrapping taking place at Slag Reduction, Rotherham, an unusual destination.

Merchant Navy pacific No. 35028 Clan Line passes a foot crossing at Blackheath Lane near Albury. Despite the locomotive working hard up the steep gradient, the perfect spring like weather meant it was too warm for any steam to appear, and the fire was clearly in good shape as barely even a haze can be seen coming from the chimney.

Unrebuilt Merchant Navy class 35011 "General Steam Navigation" is speeding through Eastleigh with the Bournemouth Belle. The train is comprised of a lengthy rake of Pullman cars, it was introduced by the Southern Railway in 1931, the first run being 5th July and it continued to run until nationalisation in 1948, after 1948 it survived under British Railways until 9th July 1967.
Here we see the train passing through a very different Eastleigh to what we see today. Unfortunately Peter had no choice but to cut the tall signals off, an idea of their height can be gauged by looking at the gantry behind the train. Although the railway man is dressed in work overalls his shoes absolutely gleam.
35011 was built during December 1944 at Eastleigh Works, it went new to 9E Nine Elms shed as 21C11. The loco had, by the time this was taken, received a modified cab, it retained the steamlining until July 1959 when it had a full rebuild, it was withdrawn 06/02/1966. At the time of this picture it was a 70A Nine Elms allocated loco. When it was withdrawn it was sent to Barry where it rusted until March 1989.
The loco is preserved and is being rebuilt into a steamliner once again.

It's quite fascinating to witness the power available to crews from just 3 cylinders, when she is hauling heavy trains over the S&C and elsewhere and a fine testament to the design, restoration and ongoing maintenance of the locomotive.

Steam locomotive No 35028 rockets through Overton, Hampshire Station today, the 4th December 2024 with the Sherbourne Christmas Carol, London Victoria to Yeovil Junction special. Clan Line is a 4-6-2 Merchant Navy Class locomotive designed by Oliver Bullied, built in 1948 at Eastleigh Works. The locomotive was originally built with an air-smoothed casing but extensively rebuilt in 1959 and the casing removed.
I was reasonably fortunate with this photo, the light levels were poor on an overcast day, but lots of steam as the engine is running hard because at the end of the train is a class 47 diesel being dragged along dead being the support engine 47848.
I was slightly out with my timings and a microsecond later would have resulted in a slightly closer image but I can't complain.
Back in the 1960s this loco was unofficially timed at speeds over 100mph. So in relative terms it was at a canter when it passed through Overton on the way to Salisbury.
