Lacking connecting rods and nameplate but otherwise almost complete Southern rebuilt Bulleid Merchant Navy pacific 35011 General Steam Navigation awaits its fate in Woodham's scrapyard in Barry, South Wales.

35011 was built at Eastleigh by the Southern Railway in December 1944 and was withdrawn by British Railways from Bournemouth shed in February 1966, arriving in Barry shortly after in June 1966.

Fortunately its fate was to be saved for preservation leaving the yard in 1989 as the 201st loco to depart. However it has been a long drag and it is still not restored, currently being kept at Hope Farm, Sellindge. For further details see: www.35011gsn.co.uk/news/march-2016-update

Eastleigh loco works erecting shop in October 1964, with Merchant Navy pacific 35004 ''Cunard White Star'' on the right, and ex-Crosti 2-10-0 92028 behind, and 4MT 2-6-4T 80084 in the background.

In typical BR fashion, 35004 has a newly-applied number, with the rest of the cab left grubby. 92028 has a newly-cast smokebox numberplate, still unpainted..

35004 was withdrawn in October 1965, and scrapped in February 1966. 92928 was withdrawn in October 1966, and scrapped in January 1967. 80084 was withdrawn in June 1965, and scrapped in October.

None of the ex-Crosti 9Fs were preserved, but eleven MN pacifics have survived, and fifteen of the BR Standard 4MT tanks..

Parts of Eastleigh works are still in operation today (2023) for overhaul and maintenance of EMUs and locos.

These are my dads old photos of the Saldanha from his merchant navy days over 50 years ago. They are scanned Kodachrome slides from 1963/64, all in remarkably good condition for photos some half a century old. I think most of them were taken in Japanese docks. I love this photo, Its almost like someones parked the Saldanha in a carpark (love the vintage cars).

From what I gather the Saldanha (8,995 ton) was built in 1959, it was launched as the Sunny Queen but once purchased it was renamed "Saldanha". It was sold and renamed a few times before being deleted from register in 1993.

The 'UK Railtours' pre-Christmas working from London Victoria to Sherborne (for a carol concert), saw Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35028 'Clan Line' away from its main duty hauling the 'Belmond Pullman' and at the head of a 12 coach train on the gentle climb to Brookwood, Surrey.

The train had been booked to run down the fast line all the way from Woking to Basingstoke, but major disruption at Woking caused by a failed train at platform 5 meant that it was sent down the slow line as far as Brookwood, where it crossed to the fast line.

This beauty has berthed in the harbour for over a week now , it is one of the more difficult quays to get a decent photo of ships while stationed there, however on my way back from Torry Battery I managed to get this shot with my Nikkor 28-300 pushed to its max, hence not one of my best photos though at least I have a new addition to my fleet collection .

“K” Line Offshore AS is aiming for the high-end market in the Offshore Support Vessel segment, and is mainly targeting ultra deep waters, harsh environments and remote areas in the global market , with its initial priority being the North Sea and Brazilian waters.

Two (2) Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels and four (4) Platform Supply Vessels were ordered 2007 at STX OSV’s shipyards. All of the vessels have been designed to be environmentally friendly, with the class notation clean design (CD) , and the state-of-the-art new builds are specified for operations in the Company’s target areas.

Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels (AHTS)

Our AHTSs are the “ strongest out there”, with 390 and 397 tonne bollard pull / 34,000 bhp, making them very well suited for anchor handling jobs in ultra deep waters and trenching operations.

Platform Supply Vessels (PSV)

Our new build PSVs have diesel electric propulsion and a large, 1,100 m² cargo deck area, suitable for the transportation of pipes for pipe laying activity.

Viking Princess is a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-driven multipurpose offshore vessel owned by Eidesvik Supply and operated by Eidesvik. She was delivered in September 2012 and is the sister ship to Viking Prince, which started sailing in March 2012.

Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven Maritime won a $77.28m (NOK440m) contract by Eidesvik back in July 2010 to build the two sister ships. The keel of the second vessel, Viking Princess, was laid in October 2011 in Kleven Maritime's yard at Ulsteinvik, Ulstein, Norway. The vessel's hull was launched in April 2012.

Viking Princess was officially christened by Mette-Marit, the Crown Princess of Norway, on 14 September 2012 in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway.

The vessel is of VS 489 Gas PSV design developed by Wärtsilä Ship Design and is built to DNV class 1A1 ICE-C Supply Vessel, Standby Vessel(S), Oil Rec, Gas Fuelled, and other notations.

Prominent features of the vessel include fuel economy, low emissions, large cargo capacity, oil recovery equipment and capacity for standby. Winterisation and de-icing solutions make her suitable for operations in ice and cold environments.

The vessel's dual fuel engines allow her to operate on gas as well as heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine diesel oil (MDO). It is only during LNG bunkering that the vessel uses diesel. The use of LNG will reduce NOx and CO2 emissions by 85% and 25% respectively.

Viking Princess has a gross tonnage of 5,014t and a dead weight of 5,800t. Her overall length, moulded breadth and summer draught are 89.6m, 21m and 7.6m respectively. Length between perpendiculars is 79.2m, while depth to main deck is 9.6m. Cargo deck area of the vessel is 1,050m2 and the height of the cargo rail is 4m.

Accommodation and facilities onboard the Viking Princess

The PSV can provide permanent accommodation for a total of 28 persons. It has four cabin states, 12 one-man cabins and six two-man cabins. All of them are provided with toilet and shower facilities.

Facilities on-board include a no-smokers room, smokers room, laundry and gymnasium. The vessel also has an office and a hospital.

Tank storage capacity and discharge rates

Storage capacities of tanks onboard the Viking Princess are 823m3 of fuel oil, 1,036m3 of fresh water, 1,781m3 of drill water/ballast, 1,392m3 of liquid mud, 210m3 of methanol, 300m3 of dry bulk, 1,667m3 of brine and 243m3 of base oil. The LNG tank can store 233m3.
