It's now 15.25 at St James Park Halt on the 1st of August 1964.
This time Merchant Navy 35001 Channel Packet is seen running 47 minutes late on a down Waterloo service.
New to the Southern from Eastleigh Works as 21C1 in June 1941 and another Nine Elms loco at this time she survived for only a further 3 months. The loco was cut up in 1965 but I am not sure as to the exact date and location.
Having came under the lines into Clapham via Pouparts Junction and then climbed the grade to Ludgate Junction 35028 'Clan Line' crosses over to run into Platform 5. Running as the 'Wessex Express' steam charter she makes a rare stop at Clapham Junction (to the delight of photographers!) before going on into the West.
Rebuilt SR Merchant Navy 4-6-2 35008 ORIENT LINE at Waterloo Station, London.
One of the crew is about to place the white headcode discs on the front of the locomotive. This train is believed to have been the 17:30 departure to Bournemouth.
The loco was built by the Southern Railway at Eastleigh in 1942 and rebuilt in 1957. Allocated to Bournemouth shed (71B). 18/05/1964 [GB 001].

Bulled rebuilt (Eastleigh, 1957) MN class 4-6-2 35017 "Belgian Marine" at London's Waterloo station - 09/11/1963.
A Nine Elms (70A) locomotive when this pictured was made, 35017 was transferred to Weymouth in September 1964 where it remained until withdrawal in July 1966.
The coach immediately behind the locomotive is a Pullman brake, suggesting this is probably the "Bournemouth Belle" train.

SR Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35027 ''Port Line'' in early-BR blue livery, at Stewarts Lane depot, on a bright, sunny day in 1950..
35027 was two years old when this photo was taken, and was rebuilt by BR in 1957, and withdrawn ten years after that - in 1967 - and sent to Woodhams scrapyard, Barry.

The loco was rescued in 1982, and restored at the Swanage Railway, and is currently undergoing a complete overhaul - including a replacement boiler, from 35022 - at the East Lancashire Railway, and will eventually be returning to mainline service..
Stewarts Lane depot is still in use, and has been modernised over the years.. The depot still plays host to a preserved Bulleid pacific, on occasions..
The 'Depository' building in the background was later the 'Decca Building', which closed down at the end of 1980, and then became a 'self-storage business centre'. The building was demolished a few years ago, and the site is now an industrial estate.

I have started to collect a number of original slides (with copyright) 'most' of which probably haven’t been seen before. Some come with image information and some don't. Please feel free to leave a comment if you know locations, dates, numbers etc, it would be much appreciated. I have uploaded these at a low resolution, please don't copy / download without my prior permission.
I only collect slides on the understanding that the full copyright transfers over to me. If you believe there to be a copyright issue please drop me an email.

This obelisk is a memorial to those lost while serving in the Merchant Navy during both world wars. Unveiled in late 2010 by Princess Anne, it sits by the final section of the Water of Leith, close to the Port of Leith, where doubtless a number of those men would have sailed from.
The memorial is covered in small sculptures from Powderhall Bronze in Leith, designed by Jill Watson. Some on the face of the obelisk show maritime scenes, such as trade routes,
Around the entire piece there's a small ledge with these tiny figures depicting everyday scenes from life in the merchant navy, from officers plotting navigation to the ship's cook carrying a large pot (while a hopeful dog looks on).

This superb engine was one of the first preserved steam locomotives to be allowed back onto BR metals by British Rail in 1972.
Built in 1948, she was withdrawn from BR service in 1967 and has consequently spent considerably longer in preservation than she did in BR service.
We have recently commemorated 125 years since opening of the GCR London extension but back in 2006 we were commemorating the 40th year since the Great Central Railway London Extension closed south of Rugby.
Back then Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class Pacific 35005 dressed up as 35030 Elder Dempster Lines which pulled a special train on that last day. I got a footplate ride on the 8.37 train & Rob the fireman let me fire back from Leicester. What a wide box! As this photo shows the engine was facing north which wasn't perfect for photography out of Loughborough station.
The real 35030 was cut up at Buttigieg's scrapyard in Newport South Wales in 1968 - see my photo of this below.

SHIP HISTORY
The Zhejiang yard, a part of the Sinopacific Group, delivered twelve ULSTEIN designed vessels to Deep Sea Supply during 2013 and 2014.
The vessels are constructed for operations all over the world. “We are very pleased with the vessels - and so are our clients”, stated Finn Amund Norbye, CEO in Deep Sea Supply. “ULSTEIN participated in the vessels' construction and was also responsible for the electrical installations. Communication and quality of work have been good. We have taken delivery of twelve large state-of-the-art platform supply vessels in approx. 18 months, which must be considered to be very satisfactory.” The X-BOW® hull line design eliminates slamming from head sea, increases comfort and safety and reduces fuel consumption.
In addition to the basic design, ULSTEIN delivered a comprehensive package of systems and equipment as well as on-site support. ULSTEIN’s equipment deliveries include diesel electric propulsion and engines, and the system deliveries include power distribution and propulsion, automation, internal communication and entertainment, navigation and radio. The vessels were among the first in which ULSTEIN had the switchboards produced at their own company in Ningbo, reducing delivery time due to shipment.
...over 5 yrs after leaving Barry scrapyard. Very little had been done to the loco but thanks to several generous benefactors and the skill of some dedicated engineers better times were ahead for 35005.
An acquired Kodachrome slide lacking detail yet it does help with the preservation story of Can Pac.
Three Mk1/2 coaches (including generator) plus ten Pullmans and an idling class 67 at the rear (in case of autumn leaves on the rails) adds up to about 600 tons on the drawbar for Bullied pacific 35028 'Clan Line', which is handled with aplomb as ever on the undulating North Downs line. This is easily the heaviest regular main line steam turn in the UK, even without the diesel at the rear.

A cold, frosty morning gives a giant exhaust plume from Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35028 'Clan Line' as she accelerates the heavy 'Orient Express' working away from the climb from Clapham Junction towards Wandsworth Town.

The hard work is over for the day and 35018 rolls through Lostock Hall and towards Preston with the return leg of "The Cumbrian Mountain Express" (1Z87, 15:16 Appleby to London Euston). At Preston, the Merchant Navy would be detached and the loco would run light back to Carnforth.
The final contribution of images taken at Woodham's Scrapyard at Barry in March 1975 shows an unidentified ex-Southern Railway Merchant Navy Pacific, how sad a sight is this? Hopefully, some viewer will be able to identify it and we can hope that it is now earning its keep on a heritage railway somewhere.
Today’s Belmond British Pullman, Middle Hill Tunnel, Box, running approximately one hour late. Fortunately, this gave more light on the tunnel facia.
There is almost a feel of summer holidays to the West Country here - a Merchant Navy pacific racing through the rolling countryside on a warm Saturday afternoon. Not the West of England mainline through Devon unfortunately but Buckland in Surrey. No. 35028 Clan Line passes the foot crossing with its last British Pullman job before its overhaul.

By the 1960s, a number of relatives on my mothers side had ended up in the Bournemouth area. As a child therefore, several weeks a year would have been spent staying at one or another, preferably the aunt and uncle living close to the LSWR main line near to Branksome! Throughout this time I must have watched trains at Central station, but I have no particular recollection of this.
Here we have unrebuilt Merchant Navy pacific 35015 'Rotterdam Lloyd' waiting to leave on a Bournemouth West to Waterloo train. The date is 7 April 1953, some three years before I was born, but a familiar enough scene until 1967.
35015 was rebuilt in 1958 and withdrawn in 1964, sent north to Yorkshire for scrapping along with 35002.
