A well known Merseyside character, Mr Mycroft Milverton.

The camera loves him and he certainly knows how to pose.

35018 was the first Bulleid pacific to be rebuilt from the original 'air-smoothed' design, resulting in a very handsome-looking loco, which was more reliable than the original.

Walking along the River Tees and reminiscing about my Merchant Navy days.

Merchant Navy, 35028 'Clan Line', bursts out of Buckhorn Weston Tunnel at the summit of the climb from Templecombe and starts the descent towards Gillingham (Dorset), with the return leg of the John Farrow Tribute railtour (1655 Sherborne to London Victoria) on 18th August 2021.

Merchant Navy-class 35028 'Clan Line' in BR green livery at Eastleigh Works, 24 May 2009.

The combination of heavy falling snow and main line steam in Surrey is quite rare, so the 18 January 2013 VSOE luncheon tour was a special sight, also being the first British main line steam outing in 2013. Regular motive power no. 35028 'Clan Line' shrugs off the snow, powering past Chalk Pit Lane level crossing, Brockham, dead on time on 18 January 2013. The snow had fallen at -3C, so the train whipped up the dry powder as a fine cloud.

built at Eastleigh locomotive works in December 1941 and was allocated to Salisbury Shed where it remained based throughout her working life until withdrawn in August 1964 and sent to Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry. The remains of 35006 were purchased for preservation in 1983 with the intention of restoring it to running order. The locomotive was moved to Toddington and was the 144th locomotive to leave the scrapyard.

Restoration has been a long drawn out affair. On 10 August 2015 35006 moved under its own power for the first time in under 50 years. The first public runs were during the GWSR's Cotswold Festival of steam gala at the end of May when I saw the locomotive. It looked fantastic and performed superbly.

This was our train loco at the head of a West Country train at Waterloo on 29/8/64. We travelled behind her only as far as Basingstoke. Merchant Navy 35024 East Asiatic Co. (Nine Elms) was not one of the late survivors -being withdrawn in Feb'65.

Vessel NS IONA (IMO: 9657636, MMSI: 319060600) is an offshore tug/supply ship built in 2014 and currently sailing under the flag of Cayman Islands. NS IONA has 97m length overall and beam of 20m. Her gross tonnage is 5165 tons.

BP celebrated the official naming of its two new, purpose-built platform support vessels (‘PSVs’) at a ceremony in Aberdeen on Friday 27 June.

The vessels will be used to support the oil company’s operations west of Shetland.

NS Elida, which has been operating in the Region since January, and NS Iona were both commissioned by BP for an exclusive 15-year bareboat term charter. The NS Iona, which set sail from the Hyundai Mipo Dockland in Ulsan, South Korea, in late April and arrived in Aberdeen early June, will enter service this week

At the Aberdeen harbour ceremony the vessels were officially christened with good luck bestowed upon them and all who sails on them.

Mark Hardie, BP’s UK Logistics and Infrastructure Manager said: “The delivery of these two vessels completes our long term marine strategy. The PSVs – together with other redeployed vessels – will be used west of Shetland to support cargo delivery, rescue and recovery operations, oil spill response and collision risk management in the area. The capability and flexibility these vessels offer, which is not currently available from the market, is a critical component of our wider marine strategy.”

The vessels, which will be based and maintained in Aberdeen, will also bring a number of business and local benefits to the UK and Norway, with nearly 80% of the total project and operating costs being spent there. The operating and maintenance work will be locally supplied, and officers and crew will be UK and Norwegian qualified mariners.

Both vessels also have special tanks to transport chemicals required for the planned enhanced oil recovery (EOR) schemes at Schiehallion and Clair.

Trevor Garlick, Regional President for BP’s North Sea business said: “Our long term commitment to the region gives us the confidence to make major investments in vital support services. These new vessels provide us with a number of safety and commercial benefits, but also allow for the greater deployment of technology, improving our capability to recover more oil from our reservoirs – which is crucial to the future of the North Sea.”

After taking some close-up shots of the small, bronze sculptures which run around the obelisk, I decided to record a video, walking around all four sides of the memorial, following the line of the figures depicting everyday life in the Merchant Navy during both World Wars.

"Eternal Father, strong to save,

Whose hand does bind the restless wave,

Who bidst the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!"

(The Sailor's Hymn, William Whiting)

SR/BR rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' class Bulleid pacific 35026 ''Lamport and Holt Line'' passing Gateshead MPD in October 1966, on the Altrinchamian Railway Excursion Society's 'The Elizabethan' railtour, from London (Kings Cross) to Newcastle. 35026 was a late substitution, after a succession of A4s and an A2 were 'unavailable', or had just been withdrawn..

The loco was withdrawn in March 1967, and scrapped six months later..

A reworked version of an earlier posting.

The Commemoration of the 40th year since the Great Central Railway London Extension closed south of Rugby saw Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class Pacific 35005 Canadian Pacific dressed up as 35030 Elder Dempster Lines which pulled a special train on that last day. Later in September 2006 she has just got the road out of platform 2.

35005 is currently under overhaul at the Mid-Hants. The real 35030 was withdrawn at the end of Southern steam in July 1967 & cut up at Buttigieg's scrapyard in Newport South Wales in 1968 - see my photo below.

Scan of a slide taken 02/02/96 at the Great Central railway Loughborough: I cannot recall what sparked repainting 'CanPac' into BR blue. It is a livery the class carried before being rebuilt, but I am unsure whether or not it was applied to No 35005.

No exact date but sometime in the 50's before September 1959 when Merchant Navy 35029 Ellerman Lines was rebuilt.

Location is Folkstone Junction and the loco is carry the full kit for the Golden Arrow service.

New to BR in February 1949 from Eastleigh Works the loco was withdrawn in September 1966. It exists today as a static exhibit and educational loco at the NRM in York with the boiler sectioned.

The Poppies come to Plymouth, arcing in a red wave onto the Naval War Memorial on Plymouth Hoe.

This is a shot which caught my eye as I scurried around the display early this morning, along with everybody else in Plymouth who owns a camera it seemed, of the sailor on watch in front of the names of the fallen lit by the early morning sun.

Respect.

These are my dads old photos of the Saldanha from his merchant navy days over 50 years ago. They are scanned Kodachrome slides from 1963/64, all in remarkably good condition for photos some half a century old. I think most of them were taken in a Japanese dock.

From what I gather the Saldanha (8,995 ton) was built in 1959, it was launched as the Sunny Queen but once purchased it was renamed "Saldanha". It was sold and renamed a few times before being deleted from register in 1993.

My dad can just be seen standing in the shadow below the bow. I'm sure this was in Nagasaki Japan.
