As the Belmond Pullman drifted down from Gomshall summit, I mused on the fact that several of the coaches are virtually 100 years old - antiques still in regular use on the modern rail network. The foreground path is The Pilgrims Way, along the North Downs.
As a tug enters Grand Harbour in Valetta it is a reminder of the heroics of the USS Ohio and its crew during WW2. Considered to this day as the saviour of Malta during the Axis siege the Ohio demonstrated the courage and sacrifice of the Merchant Marine during that terrible war!
Wikipedia has the following: The SS Ohio was an oil tanker built for the Texas Oil Company, (now Texaco). The ship was launched on 20 April 1940 at the Sun Shipbuilding Yard in Chester, Pennsylvania. She was requisitioned by the Allied forces to re-supply the island fortress of Malta, during the Second World War.[1]
The tanker played a fundamental role in Operation Pedestal, which was one of the fiercest and most heavily contested of the Malta Convoys, in August 1942.[2] Although Ohio reached Malta successfully, she was so badly damaged that she had to be effectively scuttled in order to offload her cargo, and never sailed again. The tanker is fondly remembered in Malta, where to this day she is considered to be the saviour of the beleaguered island.

Merchant Navy pacific No. 35028 Clan Line departing from Redhill station with the British Pullman heading for London Victoria on the last leg of its trip around the Surrey Hills.
Deep inside Dai Woodham's scrapyard, flanked by two British Railways Standard 4 4-6-0s, are Southern rebuilt Bulleid Merchant Navy pacifics 35010 Blue Star and 35029 Ellerman Lines. Both were withdrawn from British Railways service in September 1966 and both arrived at Woodham's in March 1967.
At this time most of the dumped engines were still virtually intact but over the years remaining locos - including 35010 which was here for nearly 18 years - were stripped of all removable parts.
Both eventually left Barry, 35010 in 1985 to the Colne Valley Railway near Castle Hedingham in Essex where it's still not restored and 35029 in 1974 to the NRM in York where it was sectioned for display in the new main hall.
Fifty years to the day since the end of steam traction operated by BR on the Southern region from Waterloo, there were probably very few who would have dared hope that such a thing would happen again so long after 'the end'. Here it is though - the 'Waterloo Sunset' tour, pounding through Raynes Park, having been allocated the rare privilege by Network Rail of a path down the main line to mark the historic occasion. Bulleid pacific 35028 'Clan Line', fresh from a major overhaul, makes efforts to recoup lost time after a trespassing incident earlier near Clapham Junction.
These locomotives, named after Merchant Navy lines when they were introduced in 1941, were the most powerful steam engines used by the Southern Region of British Rail, and the last of the class, 35030 'Elder Dempster Lines', hauled the very last passenger working on 9 July 1967.
Although I didn't actually take this picture, I was standing beside the man who did, my father, using his trusty Yashica D TLR. Although he was more used to pointing the camera at glamour models, here we are at Waterloo in January 1967, with Merchant Navy Pacific 35003 'Royal Mail', waiting to leave with a Sunday departure to Bournemouth. Although 35003 survived to the end of SR steam, she was soon despatched to Cashmore's Newport yard and broken up before the year's end.
This would have been my last look at SR steam, our summer holiday to Bournemouth coming in the August, so too late to witness the finale.

Gleaming in the late evening sunshine, 35028 "Clan Line" eases the Pullman rake into Chertsey station for the booked water stop.
The occasion was a very special one. The train formed the "Railway Children" 20th anniversary special carrying special VIPS from Waterloo International (the only steam locomotive to have ever run in and out the terminus- its 3rd time since its opening) to London Victoria via the Surrey Hills. All for a great cause.
The Merchant was standing in for 60163 "Tornado" and did a sterling job on the night, a real credit to all the guys involved in making it possible. In fact she was 4 minutes ahead when she arrived at Chertsey!

This obelisk is a memorial to those lost while serving in the Merchant Navy during both world wars. Unveiled in late 2010 by Princess Anne, it sits by the final section of the Water of Leith, close to the Port of Leith, where doubtless a number of those men would have sailed from.
The memorial is covered in small sculptures from Powderhall Bronze in Leith, designed by Jill Watson. Some on the face of the obelisk show maritime scenes, such as trade routes,
Around the entire piece there's a small ledge with these tiny figures depicting everyday scenes from life in the merchant navy, from officers plotting navigation to the ship's cook carrying a large pot (while a hopeful dog looks on).

On Saturday May 4th the MV UAL Texas has been launched at shipyard Bodewes in Hoogezand.
After the test voyage the MV UAL Texas will be christened by Ms. Suzanne den Boef (granddaughter of Mr. Roger Jungblut, Owner) in Rotterdam on June 21st.
The UAL Texas (a sister vessel of the UAL Houston) was built in The Netherlands and is special because of the application of the Groot Cross-Bow® an innovative bow shape with wave piercing abilities. Because of the innovative bow shape the vessel will have less slamming and will easier maintain its speed comparing to more conventional bow shapes with bow flare. Because of this, energy will be saved and therefore less fuel oil will be burned, which results in reduction of the CO2 output.
UNIVERSAL AFRICA LINES LTD (UAL) has named its new build 8,600dwt cargo ship MV UAL Texas at a festive event at the Cruise Terminal Rotterdam. Shipyard Bodewes launched the MV UAL Texas in May in the Netherlands.
As well as the ship naming, the event also celebrated the new name for UAL’s global agents. In Europe, HMT – established for 30 years and part of the UAL ALLIANCE for many years – adopted the new name Universal Africa Lines Netherlands (UAL NL).
At the festivities Miss Suzanne den Boef, granddaughter of Mr. Jungblut, marked the beginning of a bright future for the new UAL NL as she performed the christening of the latest new build.
The MV UAL Texas complements UAL’s fleet of 16 modern, multi--‐purpose geared vessels. She is a sister vessel of MV UAL Houston, launched in 2012, and features the Groot Cross--‐Bow®, an innovative bow shape with wave piercing abilities.
Groot Ship Design developed the bow shape which reduces slamming and enables the vessel to maintain her speed more easily compared to more conventional bow shapes with bow flare. Thanks to this, the vessel consumes less fuel, reducing emissions and creating a smoother journey in heavy weather.
On her maiden trip she will sail from Aberdeen via Antwerp to various destinations including Malabo, Pointe Noire, Banana and Lobito in West Africa.
The Ayton Cross was built in 2000 and is registered in Middlesborough, England. She's shown here assisting the oil and chemical tanker Songa Emerald (note the tow rope off the tug's bows).

I have viewed this lifebelt numerous times as I walk my usual route around the historic village of Footdee by Aberdeen Harbour in Scotland, today 28th December 2018 I decided to photograph it and check out any information available on the Scottish Maid vessel I could find on the internet, a magnificent site Aberdeen Ships dot com offers the following details, as to whether the lifebelt is a replica or genuine from the schooner I do not know.
Name : SCOTTISH MAID
Construction : WOOD
Type : SCHOONER
Date : 1839
Description
Rig : SCHOONER
Yard Number : 101
Total cost of build : £1700
In the Aberdeen Directory for 1862-3, the vessel is listed as belonging to George Leslie & Co.
Description: 1 deck, 2 masts, schooner rigged, square stern, carvel built, no galleries, female figurehead, 17th Sept. 1888 the registration cancelled. The vessel was lost on 26th Aug. 1888 at 7:30pm on the Knave Stone, North Sunderland. The ship was owned at the time by a Mr. John Crombie.
(Source: Aberdeen Shipping Register (Aberdeen City Archives))
The schooner SCOTTISH MAID, built by the Hall shipyard in 1839, was the first vessel with the raked stem known as the 'Aberdeen bow'. SCOTTISH MAID was intended for the Aberdeen-London trade, where speed was crucial to compete with steamships.
The Hall brothers tested various hulls in a water tank and found the clipper design most effective. The design was influenced by tonnage regulations. Tonnage measured a ship's cargo capacity and was used to calculate tax and harbour dues.
The new 1836 regulations measured depth and breadth with length measured at half midship depth. Extra length above this level was tax-free and became a feature of clippers. SCOTTISH MAID proved swift, regularly making the journey from Aberdeen to London in 49 hours, and reliable and the design was widely copied.
Aberdeen Journal, in 1848, described the construction of the first true Clipper Ship and what was to bcome known around the world as the Aberdeen Bow:
'The Messrs Hall commenced framing the schooner from aft, and continued the frames until they reached the fore end of the keel.
Thus far the work had proceeded, when the builders suggested a deviation from the models, which they belived would proved to be a decided improvement.
They proposed to run the stem out so as to form the cutwater, the effect of which would be to draw the waterlines finer at the bow and, as a natural consequence, the vessel would divide the water easily, be more buoyant forward, and of less register tonnage than if she were built on the old plan.
The idea did not at first meet the views of the owners. A skeleton bow was then erected, and not a few of the curious examined it and were skeptial of the uncommon design. After due consideration, the owners gave consent to proceed with the vessel according to the skeleton model, and in that style she was finished and launched.
The look of the schooner in the water was encouraging. It was evident from the appearance of her waterlines that the idea of a perfect bow was realized, and some of those who were at first opposed to the project were now among the warmest commendators.'

Speeding through Brookwood on the Southern’s West of England main line rebuilt Merchant Navy 4.6.2 No 35022 “Holland America Line” is at the head of a Waterloo -Bournemouth express.
The thirty strong Merchant Navy class was introduced during the Second World War on the Southern Railway by O V S Bullied and originally carried an overall air smoothed casing with chain driven valve gear, which earned them the nickname “Spamcans” by footplatemen unimpressed by these innovations.
Due to various problems it was decided to rebuild the entire class to the handsome form seen here in the 1950s, doing away with the air-smoothed casing, fitting coventional Walschaerts valve gear, relocating the lubricators and fitting efficent smoke deflectors and in this form they lasted to the end of steam on the Southern Region in 1967.

Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35028 'Clan Line' pounds up to Merstham tunnel on the return leg of the Kent circular 'Belmond Pullman' tour on 30 May 2024.
Having worked from a standing start at Shalford with the heavy British Pullman train behind it Merchant Navy pacific No. 35028 Clan Line pounds towards the summit of Gomshall Bank at Hackhurst Farm with its speed in the mid - high forties, and the decibel meter off the scale. A very impressive climb indeed up what can be a tricky bank.
ex-SR rebuilt Bulleid Merchant Navy Pacific, 35038 'Clan Line' emerges from Box Tunnel with the Belmond British Pullman excursion from London Victoria to Bristol Temple Meads via Bath Spa on 5th September 2018.

Boiler from "Merchant Navy" class 4-6-2 35005 "Canadian Pacific" under repair at Steamtown, Carnforth - c.08/1984.
Brian H Williams advises that the wagon being used to carry the boiler is a:
Flatrol MLL/WLL: built originally to carry the M6 "Super Sherman" tank, which never reached production. BR bought a number from the MoD, and used them to carry heavy items. I encountered them at BSC Landore in the early 1960s, where they were used to convey ingot moulds weighing 60t or more.
