A cold, frosty morning gives a giant exhaust plume from Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35028 'Clan Line' as she accelerates the heavy 'Orient Express' working away from the climb from Clapham Junction towards Wandsworth Town.

Running around an hour late due to cattle on the line on the electric leg, now in the hands of Merchant Navy No.35018, 'British India Line' makes light work of the climb to Grayrigg past Lambrigg with a Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston.

This obelisk is a memorial to those lost while serving in the Merchant Navy during both world wars. Unveiled in late 2010 by Princess Anne, it sits by the final section of the Water of Leith, close to the Port of Leith, where doubtless a number of those men would have sailed from.

The memorial is covered in small sculptures from Powderhall Bronze in Leith, designed by Jill Watson. Some on the face of the obelisk show maritime scenes, such as trade routes,

Around the entire piece there's a small ledge with these tiny figures depicting everyday scenes from life in the merchant navy, from officers plotting navigation to the ship's cook carrying a large pot (while a hopeful dog looks on).

"Eternal Father, strong to save,

Whose hand does bind the restless wave,

Who bidst the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!"

(The Sailor's Hymn, William Whiting)

Always a joy to see this beauty in harbour, today she was docked at Pocra Quay and smiled happily for the Nikon.

The Commemoration of the 40th year since the Great Central Railway London Extension closed south of Rugby saw Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class Pacific 35005 Canadian Pacific dressed up as 35030 Elder Dempster Lines which pulled a special train on that last day.

35005/30 is seen on shed at Loughborough. The ashpan is being emptied and the pile of ash by the cab steps has fallen from the side hopper door.

35005 is currently under overhaul at the Mid-Hants. The real 35030 was withdrawn at the end of Southern steam in July 1967 & cut up at Buttigieg's scrapyard in Newport South Wales in 1968 .

West Coast Railways Bullied 'Merchant Navy' 4-6-2 35018 ' British India Line' at 'The Greatest Gathering' Alstom, Litchurch Lane, Derby on the 1st August 2025.

The hard work is over for the day and 35018 rolls through Lostock Hall and towards Preston with the return leg of "The Cumbrian Mountain Express" (1Z87, 15:16 Appleby to London Euston). At Preston, the Merchant Navy would be detached and the loco would run light back to Carnforth.

The final contribution of images taken at Woodham's Scrapyard at Barry in March 1975 shows an unidentified ex-Southern Railway Merchant Navy Pacific, how sad a sight is this? Hopefully, some viewer will be able to identify it and we can hope that it is now earning its keep on a heritage railway somewhere.

Today’s Belmond British Pullman, Middle Hill Tunnel, Box, running approximately one hour late. Fortunately, this gave more light on the tunnel facia.

There is almost a feel of summer holidays to the West Country here - a Merchant Navy pacific racing through the rolling countryside on a warm Saturday afternoon. Not the West of England mainline through Devon unfortunately but Buckland in Surrey. No. 35028 Clan Line passes the foot crossing with its last British Pullman job before its overhaul.

By the 1960s, a number of relatives on my mothers side had ended up in the Bournemouth area. As a child therefore, several weeks a year would have been spent staying at one or another, preferably the aunt and uncle living close to the LSWR main line near to Branksome! Throughout this time I must have watched trains at Central station, but I have no particular recollection of this.

Here we have unrebuilt Merchant Navy pacific 35015 'Rotterdam Lloyd' waiting to leave on a Bournemouth West to Waterloo train. The date is 7 April 1953, some three years before I was born, but a familiar enough scene until 1967.

35015 was rebuilt in 1958 and withdrawn in 1964, sent north to Yorkshire for scrapping along with 35002.

Scanned from a 6x6cm size negative in my collection.

With the last FTR exam completed and passed, 35028 "Clan Line" stands outside in the warm sunshine at Stewarts Lane, Battersea as she's prepared for the last time before her farewell railtour to Crewe.

Once there, 35028 will undergo her annual general overhaul before she'll once again return in the very near future.

Today (2018) the loco is still at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Quainton, awaiting its latest overhaul.

New to the Southern as 21C14 in February 1945 she still carries a 70A Nine Elms shed plate although my source (BR database) has her moving to Weymouth Radipole 5 days previously. Withdrawl was from Weymouth in March 1967 and cutting up at Cashmore's six months later.

82023 was new from Swindon to Exmouth Junction in October 1954 and I have her also as an Eastleigh loco however unlikely. She was withdrawn in early October 1966 before completing 12 years in service and cut up at Cashmore's in March 1967.

This is part of London's war memorial to members of the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets who died during both world wars and have "no grave but the sea". It stands outside Trinity House and overlooks the Tower of London.

The roofed First World War memorial ('Tower Hill Memorial'), listing 12,000 names and designed by Edwin Lutyens, opened in 1928 and is Grade I Listed. This statue of a Merchant Navy officer, by Charles Wheeler, stands in the adjacent sunken garden, opened in 1955 and now separately Grade II* Listed, commemorating 23,765 men of the Commonwealth who died in the Second World War, including 80 pilots and lighthousemen and 832 fishermen.

Norway's Island Offshore has secured a long term contract for one of its offshore supply vessels.

The Island Champion platform supply vessel will now go on a two year contract with ASCO Marine Limited. The shipowner did not reveal the financial details of the arrangement but only said the deal was reached "at market terms."

The Island Champion will be trading out of Aberdeen, and the new contract will start today, April 20, 2016.

"We are very pleased to have secured this new contract despite the challenging market conditions we are facing, and we look forward to co-operate with ASCO Marine Limited in the years to come," says Managing Director of Island Offshore Management AS, Håvard Ulstein.

Island Offshore in 2014 sold the Island Champion to a third party Norwegian company and then leased it back for a period of five years.

This is not the first charter deal for Island Offshore this month. British oil major BP earlier in April, signed a contract for the charter of Island Offshore's Riserless Light Well Intervention vessel the Island Constructor.

On the left, is Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35003 ''Royal Mail'', which later held the record for the highest recorded speed on the Southern Region - 106 MPH - in spring 1967. The loco was withdrawn at the end of steam on the SR, in July 1967, and scrapped in December. Eleven members of the class have been preserved, but not all of these have been restored, and one has been 'sectioned' for display at the National Railway Museum, York.

Some parts of Eastleigh works are still in use today, for maintenance of EMU stock, and disposal of scrapped units..
