Visiting Peterhead Harbour I captured the Lifeboat berthed in the quay, it was great to get so close to the vessel.
The Misses Robertson of Kintail is the 10th Lifeboat in the history of Peterhead Lifeboat Station, and was the first Tamar Lifeboat in service in Scotland.
Misses Robertson of Kintail
Misses Robertson of Kintail is a Tamar class Lifeboat, the first deployed in Scotland and second in the UK. The Tamar class is the latest design for the RNLI, and will gradually replace the current Tyne class vessels in operation. Both bigger and faster than the Tyne, the Tamar also includes the computerised Systems and Information Management System (SIMS) that enables crew to control many of the lifeboat's functions remotely from the safety of their seats. Other features include advanced ergonomics that reduce the impact on the crew as the lifeboat crashes through waves, and a powered Y boat stored behind a transom door to allow immediate deployment.
Name: Misses Robertson of Kintail
Category: All weather
Official Number: 1282
Period of Service: March 2006 - Present

Notes: Misses Robertson of Kintail has a daughterboat, the in-shore Y-204, located under the aft deck. This can be launched and recovered from a retractable ramp at the back of the boat.

The Night Ferry has arrived at London Victoria station, at it's head a filthy Merchant Navy blows steam into the arched roof. The date is 29th December 1957 and the time 09.40. Around late December for some years Peter took a picture of this iconic train, a train that could be imagined speeding through the night across France and Belgium, very Agatha Christie...Those who like numbers will be disappointed, Peter may have expected to read the cabside number but escaping steam has obscured it and the headboard hides the smokebox plate. Close inspection reveals that the name plate has two short words at the top and seems to have lost one of it's ears, the part that says "Navy Class" to the right of the crest.
Peter Shoesmith.
Scanners note;
This negative, as quite a number, do requires around an hour of photoshop to get it up to even this state. This is no disrespect to Peter in any way. The films in 1957 were slow and very grainy, this negative is very thin at the loco end and over exposed at the open end, the thinner part shows all the scratches and dust that can't be removed by brushing and blowing with compressed air. Sharpness can only be tweaked a small amount because the inherent grain of the film becomes apparent very quickly. The yellowed negative is 58 years old now, I wonder how many of our super sharp full colour digital images of today will be readable in 2073?

The two new vessels are both UT 755 LN medium size PSV’s, built in Aukra Yard Norway in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The sister ships were purchased by Northern PSV AS, a newly incorporated company with investors including S.D Standard Drilling Plc. After a period of maintenance and re-flagging to the British Flag, both vessels will be ready to join the market .

The headcode, in the form of a single white lamp, indicates a light engine working from Nine Elms shed so the loco must have just arrived. The headcode will therefore be changed before departure to indicate the destination of the train.
This was the first of the Merchant Navy class locos and was built by the Southern Railway at Eastleigh in 1941 and rebuilt in 1959. Allocated to Nine Elms shed (70A) at this date. The loco was withdrawn in November 1964, only 6 months after this photo was taken. 18/05/1964 [GB 008].

I could not resist this view tonight 8/8/17, Pocra Quay Aberdeen Harbour Scotland around 1930pm, no movement from the harbour so I headed down to the quay, I could see both ships from the area that I usually access though unable to get a good shot hence I threw caution to the wind and accessed the areas marked as "No Entry" to the public, within 60 seconds I had taken a number of shots, quickly exited and made my way back to the car to view them, this is one of my favourites.

A special occasion - 5 July 2017 saw a very rare working, to celebrate the end of BR steam operation on the Southern Region on 9 July 1967. Special dispensation was granted for the Waterloo to Bournemouth 'Bournemouth Belle' working to run down the main line on a weekday morning (0952 from Waterloo), rather than the usual steam route via Putney.
The train, headed by Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35028 'Clan Line', is seen pounding through Clapham Junction on the down main fast line. The ECS on the left had been very slow to move out of the yard, so I was forced to wait until the loco had cleared the 450s before firing the shutter. The result was that the now-defunct SPAD signal at the head of platform 8 sliced the smokebox in two, and so I have had to resort to editing to remove it - something I am very reluctant to do with posted photos. The dirty windows of the footbridge from which the shot was taken have not helped either!
Carrying 556 passengers, the MV Astoria is currently operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages. She's registered in Madeira, Portugal, and was built in 1946 and commissioned, as the MV Stockholm, in 1948. She was renamed Astoria in 2016, having been substantially rebuilt in Italy between 1989 and 1994. Her claim to infamy, as the trans Atlantic ship Stockholm, was when she collided with the Italian passenger ship Andrea Doria in 1956.
There's a story attached to this shot.
We set off (from our house in Betchworth to drive up to the top of Boxhill for some shots. On the way there we encountered many cyclists whom cars were reluctant to overtake on the narrow road, but finally got onto Boxhill Road, only to encounter "Road Closed Ahead" signs. Not knowing whether the closure was beyond the view point, we pressed on in hope. We were wrong! So, we turned round and headed back to Betchworth.
On the way back there was a traffic queue waiting to overtake a horse rider, but we finally got past that, with four minutes to go. My worry was the inevitable long queue that occurs whenever the crossing at Betchworth is closed. Sure enough, we were a few seconds too late, and there were about ten cars ahead of us. i baled out (as a passenger) and ran down to the crossing just in time to hear the approaching whistle. The other factor was that it was running two minutes early, which would have made all the difference had it been on time, or a fraction late.
So, here it is; a last second, panic shot of the 'Belmond Pullman', headed by Bulleid pacific 35028 'Clan Lane' climbing to the summit at Betchworth, storming through Betchworth station. Very unusually, the exhaust was very smoky, whereas 'Clan Line' is renowned for its very clean exhaust.
