Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a world-wide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills; this species eats fruits and insects.

Brown-headed Barbet (Megalaima zeylanica)

Bucco franklinii was the scientific name proposed by Edward Blyth in 1842 who described a vivid green barbet with a golden throat collected in Darjeeling. It was placed in the genus Megalaima proposed by George Robert Gray in 1842 who suggested to use this name instead of Bucco. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the following golden-throated barbet zoological specimens were described:

Megalaema ramsayi proposed by Arthur Viscount Walden in 1875 was a golden-throated barbet collected in the Karen Hills.

Cyanops franklinii auricularis proposed by Herbert C. Robinson and C. Boden Kloss in 1919 for a barbet collected at the Langbian Plateau in southern Vietnam.

Cyanops franklinii minor proposed by C. Boden Kloss and Frederick Nutter Chasen in 1926 for a specimen collected in Perak, Malaysia.

Cyanops franklinii trangensis proposed by Joseph Harvey Riley in 1934 for a barbet collected in Thailand.

Molecular phylogenetic research of barbets revealed that the birds in the genus Megalaima form a clade, which also includes the fire-tufted barbet, the only species placed in the genus Psilopogon at the time. Barbets formerly placed in this genus were therefore reclassified under the genus Psilopogon. Two golden-throated barbet subspecies are recognised as of 2014:

P. f. franklinii occurs in the Himalayan foothills from central Nepal to northern Myanmar, Laos and southwestern China.

P. f. ramsayi occurs from central and eastern Myanmar to the Malay Peninsula.

The coppersmith barbet, crimson-breasted barbet or coppersmith (Psilopogon haemacephalus), is a bird with crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer. It is a resident found in the parts of Southeast Asia. Like other barbets, they chisel out a hole inside a tree to build their nest. They are mainly fruit eating but will take sometimes insects, especially winged termites.

The White-cheeked Barbet, also called the Small Green Barbet (megalaima viridis) is a species of small barbet found in southern India. They are endemic to the forest areas of the Western Ghats and adjoining hilly areas. Like all other Asian barbets they are mainly frugivorous although they may sometimes eat insects and small reptiles. They use their powerful bills to excavate nest cavities in trees.

Re-did this one just a bit. So much fun shooting these small guys with the 300mm lens. They are so small and easy to shoot. I can stay still under the tree and they will get fairly close...

Taiwan Barbet (Megalaima nuchalis), Dasyueshan, Taiwan

The Taiwan Barbet (Megalaima nuchalis; formerly; Megalaima oorti nuchalis) is a bird endemic to the island of Taiwan.

It is 20-23.5 cm long. The plumage is mostly green apart from the head which is patterned with blue, yellow and red. There is a black stripe above the eye. The bill is black and the feet are grey-green. The Chinese name for the bird, "five-colored bird" (五色鳥) refers to the five colors seen on its plumage. Because of its colorful plumage and that its call resembles that of a percussion instrument known as a wooden fish, the species is also referred to as the "spotted monk of the forest" in Taiwan.

As promised, here is a better perspective, with arguably a better lens. The nesting bird would stick its head out the nest whenever I could emulate the barbets' distinctive call. Taiwan Barbet (Megalaima nuchalis; formerly; Megalaima oorti nuchalis)

The Coppersmith Barbet, Crimson-breasted Barbet or Coppersmith (Megalaima haemacephala), is a bird with crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer. It is a resident found in the Indian Subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. Like other barbets, they chisel out a hole inside a tree to build their nest. The Lineated barbet (Psilopogon lineatus) is a large barbet found in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, along the southern foothills of the Himalayas and also in parts of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The presence of a Lineated barbet is often betrayed by its far reaching territorial loud poo-poh calls uttered every second, as well as a rapid bubbling koh-koh-koh-koh-koh call.

DESCRIPTION

With its broad yellow orbital skin, beige to pinkish bill and broad creamy-white streaked head and breast, it is unlikely to be mistaken for any of the native barbet species of Singapore. Only one other barbet, the somewhat smaller Green-eared barbet megalaima faiostricta of south China, Thailand and Indochina is generally similar in appearance but lacks the bright yellow orbital skin and is characterised by a red eye and rather obvious green cheeks and ear-coverts; the calls of the two species are also distinctive.

DISTRIBUTION

The Lineated barbet has a large native range from northwest, north and north-east India, Nepal, Bangladesh, West Bengal, south Myanmar, Thailand, south and central Vietnam to south-west China (south Yunnan), Java and Bali, but is limited to northern Peninsular Malaysia.

HABITAT

This bird has been found in habitats ranging from deciduous forest, scattered trees in open areas, coastal scrub and plantations up to 1,220 m, but is confined to the lowlands in northern Peninsular Malaysia.

DIET

Like other barbets, this species is a frugivore with a varied diet consisting of fruits, in particular figs, nectar as well as flower petals. It also takes insects, eggs and nestlings particularly when feeding young. It nests inside holes bored into tree trunks and is double-brooded, with the second brood started within days of the fledging of the first.

ALIEN SPECIES IN SINGAPORE

The non-native Lineated Barbet (Megalaima lineate) is now firmly established in various parts of Singapore. They have spread over the past 2 decades and persist in areas where they had previously been seen or heard. The species has spread in the past two decades and become established in the west, south and central parts of Singapore and field visits confirmed the persistence of populations in most of these areas, with evidence of breeding in some cases. Further field studies across all parts of Singapore and the satellite islands are needed to determine accurate populations of these species and observe any adverse ecological interactions with native avian species. Appropriate intervention conservation measures may be proposed if there is evidence of detrimental effects of the increasing population of these alien species on native birds that occupy similar ecological/foraging niches and nesting sites.
