Coppersmith Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala)
Barbets are a group of diverse and attractively coloured birds placed under the family Capitonidae. There are a total of 82 species, of which 25 are Asian. Malaysia is home to 14 species. Of these, Singapore used to have five species. Now only three: Coppersmith (Megalaima haemacephala), Lineated (M. lineata) and Red-crowned (M. rafflesii) are around. The other two, Brown (Calorhamphus fuliginosus) and Blue-eared (M. australis) have long disappeared from Singapore.
Although colourful, these birds are surprisingly difficult to spot. In fact they are more often heard than seen. Their calls can be monotonous and ventriloqual, making it difficult to locate the bird.
The monotonous call of barbets is best represented by Coppersmith, often called “brain-fever” bird. It gives a series of “pook” notes incessantly. This sound is supposed to resemble the tapping of a coppersmith’s hammer.
All barbets excavate their own nesting cavities, some even their roosting cavities.
These are primarily fruit eaters, although they catch insects to feed their young. There are a few reports of barbets taking lizards, tree frogs, birds and their eggs.
The lineated barbet is a large barbet found in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, along the southern foothills of the Himalayas and also in parts of Bangladesh and West Bengal. Like other barbets it is a frugivore.
Scientific name: Megalaima lineata
Higher classification: Megalaima

The Black-browed Barbet or Müller's Barbet (Megalaima oorti) is a bird belonging to the Asian barbet family, Megalaimidae.
It is 20-23.5 cm long. The plumage is mostly green apart from the head which is patterned with blue, yellow and red. There is a black stripe above the eye. The bill is black and the feet are grey-green. The Chinese name for the bird, "five-colored bird" (五色鳥) refers to the five colors seen on its plumage. Because of its colorful plumage and that its call resembles that of a percussion instrument known as a wooden fish, the species is also referred to as the "spotted monk of the forest" in Taiwan.

Here are some photos taken of the Taiwan Barbet, also known as the Five Coloured Bird in Daan Park, Taipei, Taiwan. This bird is endemic to the island of Taiwan. When I visited the park there were several trees cordoned off to keep photographers from getting too close. The birds nest in holes in the trees and one of the pair, in this case the male flies off and brings back food. I took these photos a couple days prior to Typhoon Soudelor hitting the city. The female comes up from the nest for air and calls out to the male. The day after the typhoon I returned and sadly the tree, and of course the nest had been destroyed in the storm. I saw the male up high in a nearby tree calling out over and over, so he may have lost his mate.
lovely Tuesday to all...

Bird: Black-browed Barbet or Müller's Barbet (Megalaima oorti)
We end the weekend with the flashy Golden-throated Barbet. This resident breeder can be found in the hills of northeast India east to southwestern China, Malaysia and Vietnam in the tropical montane and moist deciduous forests where it makes its nest in tree holes. The word ‘Barbet’ is derived from the French word ‘barbe’ meaning 'beard', referring to the whiskers found under a Barbet’s chin! We hope your weekend is as spectacular as this bird, photographed byRockjumper Birding Tours leader Markus Lilje in Bhutan.
Thanks to my friend www.flickr.com/photos/primevalnature/for this Birdie's name.
The Red-throated Barbet (Megalaima mystacophanos) is a species of bird in the Ramphastidae family. It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical swamps. It is threatened by habitat loss.

A White-cheeked Barbet clicked in the backyard. These birds are primarily cavity nesters, chiseling out the trunk or a vertical branch of tree with their powerful beaks. These nest holes may also be used as roosts. These barbets play an important role in forests as seed dispersal agents.

Bird: Male Coppersmith Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala).
The Brown-headed Barbet, which is endemic to the Indian subcontinent, is not uncommon wherever there are trees, even in cities. Its "ku-turr, ku-turr" call is a characteristic sound of Indian woods. An unusual open perch for this species. District Park, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi. May 13, 2017.
The blue-throated barbet (Megalaima asiatica) is an Asian barbet having bright green, blue & red plumage, seen across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a world-wide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills; this species eats fruits and insects. They frequent evergreen forests, deciduous forests, gardens, orchards, teak forests and cities with fruiting trees.

Gold-Whiskered Barbet, Takur Pipi Kuning, Megalaima chrysopogon.
The Gold-Whiskered Barbet is one of the largest of the sixteen species of barbets in Southeast Asia. Their green overall plumage and yellow "whiskered" cheeks camouflages them amid the foliage they favor.Genders are similar in appearance. This bird spends most of the day singing and foraging for food in the forest canopy. Otherwise well camouflaged, their rapid and extraordinary loud call often betrays their presence. Golden-whiskered barbets are frugivores that gorge themselves on berries, figs, and any edible fruits they can find in the canopy.

Coppersmith Barbet, Takur Akar, Megalaima haemacephala
This species got its name because the calls is like a sound of coppersmith’s hammer. The first time I encounter this birds, it is perching high on a tree, too far for my lens. Usually can be found in scattered trees of open country, secondary growth and gardens. One need to be patient for it to comes down to lower level for a good shots. A tree with a lots of fruits got better chances to find this species. Look high up on trees in the gardens early in the morning. You might find it sitting on the top for a long period of time. This one is feasting among other species near fruiting Ficus benjamina tree. Give me ample time to focus and shot.

I think it's breeding season for Coppersmith Barbets - so far I've located 4 nesting sites ( in a radius of 2 km ) bustling with activity. This one is app: 10 feet from ground level.

The White-cheeked Barbet, also called the Small Green Barbet, is one of the frequent visitors to the backyard. Found in southern India it is very similar to the more widespread Brown-headed Barbet. Though mainly frugivorous they may sometimes eat insects. They use their bills to excavate nest cavities in trees. These barbets are arboreal and will rarely visit the ground. They obtain most of the water they need from their fruit diet.
