Taiwan Barbet (Megalaima nuchalis), Beitou, Taiwan
The Chinese name for the bird, "five-colored bird" (五色鳥) refers to the five colors seen on its plumage. Because of its colorful plumage and that its call resembles that of a percussion instrument known as a wooden fish, the species is also referred to as the "spotted monk of the forest" in Taiwan.
It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests. It forages in the upper and middle levels of the canopy. It excavates a nest hole in a tree but little else is known about its breeding habits.

During the breeding season which begins at the start of summer their calls become loud and constant especially in the mornings. They have a monotonous Kot-roo ... Kotroo... call. The head is brownish streaked with white, sometimes giving it a capped appearance. The bill is pale pinkish.

This bird is so colorful that its hard to miss it when among the woods, but once inside dense foliage, no matter how hard you try, you wont be able to spot it.
Perhaps Blue-throated Barbet’s colorful head will be of help in this situation, with primary colors blue green and red present. This bird loves Common Fig and Peepal tree (the tree under which Lord Buddha got enlightenment), well maybe all Ficus species for their delicious fruits and deciduous nature. They are generally spotted early morning having community breakfasts with other birds

Note: No matter what focal length one uses for wildlife and birding, he'll always be wanting even more reach for the birds! Same's the case with 400mm for me! But for the time, it works just fine!

The Brown-headed Barbet has an orange eye-ring but the calls are very similar and the two species occur together in some of the drier forests to the east of the Western Ghats.
