學名: Megalaima oorti nuchalis

Coppersmith Barbet ( Megalaima haemacephala) Subspecies M.h. indica is a resident of Sri Lanka They mostly found in dry lowlands. Very common in north and east of the island.
All the while I was looking out for that ‘man thing’ to appear from behind but it was nowhere to be found. I was wondering how do they do it?
It goes like this…. The male does not possess a penis as most male birds don’t
Instead both sexes possess a special organ known as a cloaca. When they get into position as seen above, their cloacas are pressed together and the sperm is transfer from the male to the female, in a fraction of a second !! This action is called a cloacal kiss. The pair would repeat the process numerous times throughout the day for many days. I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy doing that especially up on a tree, but for a bird it’s all about quantity and not quality
However the female will be awarded with a berry after each intense session.
When the male runs out of berries or sperm or both, he would then quickly looks for more in preparation for the next round of excitement. Notice the female hunch forward to facilitate the process while the male on top of her desperately trying to attach his organ to hers.
Just imagine you have to do it with a mouthful of melons, balance delicately on her back, on top of a tree doing the aiming....all roll into one....for me...forget about it...I would rather watch tv and eat peanuts.

Coppersmith Barbet F-cking in broad daylight
Most male birds do not have a penis with the exception of ducks and geese which possess a whopping penis length of 18 inches (that is even one inch longer than mine!!)
They need such scary length because ducks and geese do it over water. They can't simply rub cloacas as water will swallow their precious sperm.
The long length will ensure deep and fast delivery of its load inside the female reproductive organ. Ducklings guaranteed
Please bear in mind most animals do not make love for fun like we naughty humans do. They do it for the survival of their species and they are very serious about it. They are genetically programmed to carry out such task to ensure the continuation of its own kind and inadvertently providing fascination to humans, especially photographers like myself 😊

The Brown-headed Barbet or Large Green Barbet(Megalaima zeylanica) is an Asian barbet. This is a relatively large barbet at 27 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills. The Brown-headed Barbet is a resident breeder in the Indian Subcontinent, widespread in India and also seen in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Eats fruit and insects. it is fairly tolerant of humans and is often seen in cities, in greenery. It nests in a tree hole, laying 2-4 eggs. The bird is largely frugivorous on mangos, ripe jack, papaya, banana, figs and similar cultivated fruit trees. Its habitat includes urban and country gardens though it tends to eschew heavy forest. It nests in a suitable hole in a tree that it will often excavate out, not unlike a woodpecker. A pair will take it in turns to incubate the eggs and they often communicate with each other using their "Kura, kura" calls.

The Taiwan Barbet (Megalaima nuchalis; formerly; Megalaima oorti nuchalis) is a bird endemic to the island of Taiwan.
Source: Wikipedia
This is a species of barbet found in southern India. The head is brownish streaked with white, sometimes giving it a capped appearance. The main range is along the Western Ghats south from the Surat Dangs and along the associated hills of southern India into parts of the southern Eastern Ghats. These birds are primary cavity nesters, chiseling out the trunk or a vertical branch of tree with a round entry hole. They breed from December to July, sometimes raising two broods. These barbets are arboreal and will rarely visit the ground. They obtain most of the water they need from their fruit diet. Seen here tucking into a Custard Apple.

Barbet
They are usually plump-looking, with large heads, and their heavy bill is fringed with bristles. The Great Barbet (Megalaima virens), at 210 g (7.4 oz) and 33 cm (13 inches), is the largest of the species, and indeed among its relatives only surpassed in size by some of the toucans. They are mainly solitary birds, eating insects and fruit. Figs of the genus Ficus are the most important fruit taken by Asian barbets. Large fig trees will attract several species of barbet along with other frugivores. In addition to figs numerous other species of fruiting tree and bush are visited, an individual barbet may feed on as many as 60 different species in its range. They will also visit plantations and take cultivated fruit and vegetables. Fruit is eaten whole and indigestible material such as seed pits regurgitated later (often before singing). Barbets are thought to be important agents in seed dispersal in tropical forests. The precise nesting details of many species are not yet known. Like many members of their order, Piciformes, their nests are in holes bored into a tree, and they usually between 2 to 4 eggs, incubated for 13–15 days.

The call is a loud rather metallic tuk…tuk…tuk (or tunk), reminiscent of a copper sheet being beaten, giving the bird its name. Repeated monotonously for long periods, starting with a subdued tuk and building up to an even volume and tempo, the latter varying from 108 to 121 per minute and can continue with as many as 204 notes. They are silent and do not call in winter

Cute couple whispering sweet nothings to each other amongst the branches
The Coppersmith Barbet or Crimson-breasted Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala), is a bird with crimson forehead and neck. It is a resident near passerine bird from South Asia, with occasional presence in Southeast Asia. The name barbet refers to the bristles or barbs fringing its heavy bill. It may sometimes be referred to simply as Coppersmith.
The Coppersmith is brightly coloured, with a black-bordered yellow face with black eye stripes, red forecrown and throat patch. Bill stout and dark. Upper parts are grass green and underparts yellowish-green, diffusely streaked with darker green. Juveniles are duller and lack the red patches. The sexes are alike.
Somewhat larger than a sparrow, it is a relatively small barbet at 17 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck and large head. The short, truncated tail is distinctively triangular in flight.
Keeps solitary, pairs, or small groups; larger parties occasionally on abundantly fruiting Ficus trees. Fond of sunning themselves in the morning on bare top branches of tall trees, often flitting about to sit next to each other. The flight is straight, with rapid flaps.
The call is a loud rather metallic tuk…tuk…tuk (or tunk), reminiscent of a copper sheet being beaten, giving the bird its name. Repeated monotonously for long periods, starting with a subdued tuk and building up to an even volume and tempo, the latter varying from 1.5 to 2 per second.
The beak remains shut during each call - a patch of bare skin on both sides of the throat inflates and collapses with each tuk like a rubber bulb, with much body and tail shaking. Not very vocal in cold weather - a spell of rain or cold immediately silences them, but it is "one of India's most familiar sounds in the hot season"
