Saturday was day trip day with @pfunk_photography ! Stand by for a series of Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and the north end of the Great Salt Lake.

Autumn in New England. I guess I have waited long enough to post this. I had uploaded so many pics immediately after returning from my last trip to Vermont that I had to put this one on the back burner. I arrived just before dawn and there was much more low cloud foggy haze just above the water. It made a great moody atmosphere but the light shortly after looked better on the foliage. It was tough to decide which ones to work on. With the camera, I would have preferred the slightly darker pics but from the drone I like the pics from when the sun is just slightly higher.

The long light trails of early morning traffic work their way along their lines. Downtown Los Angeles during sunrise on a weekend morning. The 4-level interchange, in DTLA, provides endless composition options. The best are from the air. The Mavic 3 and some color grading makes it pop. This is (almost) as South as the morning sun will rise. It ended up close enough to get some color in the sky near the buildings. New buildings here. New buildings there. Buildings building build.

The Henry’s Fork River is so clear and beautiful as it flows from its headwaters at Big Springs to Island Park Reservoir! Visitors can float the river in kayaks or tubes and appreciate its beauty in close. You can often spot huge trout and moose along the way.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano crater located in East Java, Indonesia. The name Bromo comes from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Mount Bromo is one of three monolithic peaks situated in the Tengger Massif caldera in the Bromo-Tergger-Semeru National Park. At 2,392 meters tall, Mt Bromo is not among the tallest of Indonesia's mountains but its stunning beauty lies in its incredible setting. From a vantage point on Mount Penanjakan (2,770 meters above sea level), 2.5 hours from Malang. visitors from around the world come to see the sunrise over Mt Bromo.

Tumpak Sewu is a tiered waterfall that is located between the Pronojiwo District in East Java, Indonesia. The waterfall is overshadowed by Semeru, an active volcano and the highest mountain in Java. As stated in legend, Semeru was transplanted from India to create the island of Java. Tumpak Sewu means "a thousand waterfalls." From above it looks like the tree of life, from below it is immensely powerful, and from all angles, it is quite simply mindblowing and one of the most amazing locations in East Java.

One of my favorite dirt roads because of the way it winds along the bank of the reservoir and for the way forest comes right up to the edge of the road. Just a sliver of human influence running through the wild.

In the early morning we were still standing at the top of the big peak of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Unfortunately with normal boring midday sunlight.

In the evening, when we were on our way back to the hotel, the lighting was beautiful! (Meals calling…)

Unfortunately much too far away to legally fly this long distance to take a picture with the 24mm lens.

So I used the 7x lens and created this 40 megapixel panorama

"The desert, when the sun comes up. I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the Earth began."

I first visited the Spiral Jetty in the spring of 2017. The lakeshore was about 100 yards from the Jetty at the time. This spring, due to drought, the edge of the lake is at least a half mile away. But the area is still stunning.

Once in a while you are blessed with just the right set of conditions. It's the being in the right place at the right time kind of scenario. This spectacular sunrise was from a trip to Downtown Los Angeles just a few days after the Mavic 3 had its long-awaited first major firmware update. The one that released pano mode. This update, needless to say, was very much anticipated and very much desired. This would also, as it turned out, be a morning of learning a very valuable lesson in mourning. As the sky was turning these colors, I was snapping away panos. Aiming the lens, this way and that way. Wide-angle shots: Done. 180º shots: Plenty. I was so excited to shoot under these conditions with the new pano settings that I didn't even think to set up even just one regular photo. Smiling, I packed everything up as the show ended and headed home. I have been pretty busy lately, life gets like that sometimes, and I put the files on the computer and re-packed the drone bag for an upcoming trip to Mammoth. Fast forward to being in Mammoth, and for some reason formatting the SD card before shooting there. Loving all of the options that the new firmware had given me and being excited to start playing around with the files. I was back home and on the computer re-visiting the super-sunrise DTLA shots and wondering where the single RAW photos were from pano mode. I think you get where this is going. Long story longer: I now know that the pano shots are kept together in a completely separate folder. Only the merged jpegs are in the main folder. So, to sum up what a dutz I am. What you are looking at is the best single frame photo that I had available as a RAW photo from this morning. There are plenty of beautiful, fully composed, pano shots. In Jpeg. Ouch.

Last week, I had the pleasure of spending Thanksgiving surrounded by family and as a bonus I was about 10 minutes down the road from this beautiful scene.

I deployed my Mavic 3 drone in stiff but manageable wind to document this incoming shelf cloud over Aransas Bay on the middle Texas coast. Alas - this promising system produced almost no rain for our area...but, it did put on a show!

How was your weekend? I hope it was a great one! I’m starting a new workweek after the Labor Day holiday yesterday. Let’s go out there and make it amazing!

Just enough snow to get out there and lay some corduroy.... Methow Valley, Wa

Patagonia's glaciers carved its jagged landscape as they pushed out from their source, the massive South Patagonian Ice Cap. They now hang crumbling over cliffs and sweep down valleys to calve into cobalt lagoons. They can be explored on boat trips, ice hikes, kayak trips or ski tours, in areas throughout the region.

Sunrise is very early this time of year, but watching one above the desert red rock is priceless.

High Chair Ridge, Hunan, China

Another shot moments before sunrise in Downtown Los Angeles. Heavy cinematic toning and maybe too much sharpening. It's a little crisp. The vibrancy is impressive. As with most of what has been coming out of the Mavic 3. I have been inspired to be more creative with the color grading. I'm starting to get the hang of it. There's a world of possibilities out there.

* Thank you all for the comments and faves *

Downtown Los Angeles in the early hours. As the sun just starts to rise for the day. A few wispy clouds are present as a few weary travelers make their way to their destinations. The slight light trails really make this for me. A short drag of the shutter really increases the interestingness of this early morning scene. Wide angle close up shots of this city will never get old.

This island is practically inaccessible - it is located almost in the middle of the lake, it has quite steep shores and it is very difficult to climb it. But why do I have a drone that I can explore virtually any terrain? Just to be able to "visit" this island!

The marina at Great Salt Lake State Park is back! Rising water levels have allowed sail boats back into the water and sailing is back on the agenda for lake fans.

DJI Mavic 3. It's all that. Taken just after sunrise in Palos Verdes on the Pacific Coast. I need a few more flights to really dial it in. It is a whole other world different than my other Air 2 drone. I could get used to these.

Just a lone seagull enjoying a flight at sunrise. I agree with the gull. Flying at sunrise is the best!

This thing is too much fun. I'm glad sensor size has finally caught up to my needs (and for a reasonable price). Manhattan Beach Pier during the King Tides last week. Mavic 3 sky-high straight down. I'm not sure I agree with the "top-down" label these types of pics get. It's not the top. There's definitely more above me. I prefer look-down. But then again, I don't get to decide what things are called. I sound like a Boomer. But I'm not. I swear.

After a short hike from Goblin Valley, you too can spend time with these three beautiful sisters.

Is anyone sick of these fall photos yet? It is still (technically) October, so I will share at least one more. Just some lake in the North East United States. Tree-top look-down at the waters edge with fall colors and evergreens.

Vermont in Autumn is a really special place for me. It always will be. I am happy to share these with you. Now, it's time to get the Winter clothes out of storage and put a fresh coat of waterproofing on the boots. This year is not over yet and there are a few more places I need to visit.

No dramatic lighting, but camping out over the weekend was greener than I’ve seen in years. How would you like to spend the night next to that dirt track?

This stunning old rusty railway bridge was constructed in around the turn of the century. It was part of the "Great Northern Railway" line (GNR) that was established throughout Ireland in 1883. This old bridge was once a major part of the Industrial Era that has since long gone. Sadly after 75 years service the "Great Northern Railway" shut down operations in 1957

Looking down on this silent & calm river & watching everything made me think on how fast times have changed. Everything has moved on from steam trains to planes and cars etc who knows what technology tomorrow brings?

I am very thankful that at least some of these beautiful industrial structures still stand. Nowadays they are being slowly reclaimed by nature but on the bright side, its great for us to photograph, admire & to remind us on an era gone by....

Killea overlooking Inishowen, County Donegal, Ireland

Each year during Autumn this giant ‘Emery Celtic Cross’ appears from nowhere like a miracle, proudly stamped onto our landscape for the world to admire. I love this marvel not only for its sheer beauty but for the interesting story on how this all came to be……

This giant 100 meter long cross is now known as the 'Emery Celtic Cross' which is proudly named after its creator Liam Emery. Liam intelligently planted 2 different species of pine trees in the shape of this giant Celtic cross design 10 years ago in these woods of County Donegal. The reason being that the outer trees are evergreen and don’t drop their needles during Autumn, but the trees used for the actual cross design are not evergreen and turn a golden colour right before they drop their needles for the cold seasons ahead.

After a decade of this forestry secretly growing all the same colour, it was only a few years ago that these trees finally matured enough to shed their needles during autumn. This hidden wonder became visible for the first time and the ‘Emery Celtic Cross’ was first sighted by local passenger plane pilots who believed it to be an actual miracle 🙏 Liam we thank you for this lasting Legacy as you have certainly put a stamp on Ireland 💚

Ards Forest Park, Creeslough, Sheephaven Bay, County Donegal, Ireland

Along the edge of Ards Forest Park sheltered between two headlands on the majestic Sheephaven Bay can be found this secluded tidal shore locally known as ‘The Back Strand’. What’s most beautiful about this bay is the numerous sandy cove beaches peppered along its forest boundary shoreline.

I find it fascinating how the trees of the surrounding woodland flow like an unrolled carpet, straight out to these little beach coves. Can you just imagine what it may have been like for those early settlers who blindingly travelled through this dense forest, to be pleasantly greeted at the end of their adventure by some of the most stunning forest beaches in Ireland

The Cordillera Sarmiento is a mountain range located in the Chilean Patagonia to the west of Puerto Natales named after Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, who was a Spanish explorer who navigated the region's waterways between 1579 and 1580. On the official maps of the Chilean IGM, not a single feature of the Cordillera de Sarmiento has been given a name, in part due to the total lack of human presence in the area. Nevertheless, over the years, explorers and climbers have named the summits, lakes, glaciers, and rivers. With nearly 2,000 metres of jagged relief, the cordillera has a profile somewhat similar to the French Alps, but its glaciation is much more extensive, sending large glacier snouts into tidewater.

Late day sun and long shadows fall on the road to the Salt Flats. With all of the water, the road has become a causeway out into the middle of an impromptu lake.

The river flooding reached its peak near here around Christmas time.

The short, dark days of winter are slowly lengthening as the land prepares to emerge from the winter snows.

In Utah, pick any direction and drive. You’ll run into mountains, lakes, red rock, desert and endless skies. It’s always an adventure!
