View of the Altmühltal valley near Hagenacker from a lofty height. You can clearly see the course of the river that gives the valley its name, including the Old Water arm and the classic rock formations. The landscape is still barren in early spring. The tranquillity was only briefly disturbed when the 2019 310 hired from Lokomotion rushed through the valley with the empty alumina train to Wetzlar. The characteristic exterior design of this EURO 9000 also comes into its own when viewed from a distance. It has the classic zebra design, but at the same time a shortened locomotive body, comparable to a typical three-phase locomotive. This emphasises the length of the impressive dual-power engine.
Shortly before sunset on 31 December 2024, I managed to take this atmospheric photo of DEVK advertising locomotive 101 088 in front of the Munich-Nuremberg Express near Fahlenbach in the Hallertau. It is already slowing down with the RE 4025, as the next stop Rohrbach is not far away. Since the timetable change, the class 101 has been operating a rotation on the RE 1 line with the modernised IC 1 coach fleet in order to ease the tense situation regarding the availability of the Skoda sets.

What more could one say about the Silver Strand Beach other than it’s simply one of the most stunning beaches you could ever lay eyes on. Certainly one of Ireland’s finest horseshoe beaches, complete with its surrounding natural sea grass landscape. Located on the extreme western point of rural Donegal, far away from the everyday bustling of congested towns and traffic jams.
On arrival you are still extremely high above this cove which was carved deep into the surrounding bedrock throughout millions of years of wave erosion. There’s a steep 174 stepped path leading down to this dreamy beach. An experience your mind will never forget walking down and an experience your legs will never forget from climbing back up them 😅 Great for both your body & mind.....
Such a surreal feeling to gaze across our vast Atlantic Ocean (The Pond) knowing that the next stop is America & Canada! Silver Strand is pretty much a little bit of heaven tucked safely away here in Ireland’s side pocket 💚

Vestiges of Delaware's wooden ships exposed at low tide....
I've been waiting for a few months to get the right tide, light or no winds, a good storm to scour out the shore and the wreck, an early winter sun with deep shadows, and my availability, to capture this old wreck. I used to explore this when I was a teen and there was much more wreck in those days. Nevertheless, there's still much to see of this reminder of Delaware's past. The early low sun casts long shadows on the sand that show considerable relief still protruding upward.

I was expecting the R 763 ‘Berounka’ from Železná Ruda-Alžbětín to Praha hl.n. at Špičák on 18 January 2025. Despite the warm temperatures, there was still a good covering of snow here. The design of the ‘red flash goggles’ 754.074 stands out well from the elevated viewing angle. From a photographer's point of view, it is pleasing that the Czech diving goggles come in so many different colours.

The Mount Lofty Ranges are estimated to have been formed over 70 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period or the early Tertiary period.
Give or take a month of Sundays or two.
On a 24hr clock this formed about 2300hrs in comparison to the earth's age of 4.5billion years.

A crop circle, crop formation, or corn circle is a pattern created by flattening a crop usually a cereal. The term was first coined in the early 1980s. Although obscure natural causes or alien origins of crop circles have been suggested by fringe theorists, there is no scientific evidence for such explanations, and all crop circles are consistent with human-made items (although with the more elaborate ones, its not always possible to see how!)
Although such formations have appeared worldwide, south-west England is considered without doubt to be the “world capital” of crop circles. They are particularly concentrated in the county of Wiltshire, where a treasure trove of ancient history includes the Neolithic sites of Stonehenge and Avebury – both crop circle hotspots. There have been 380 crop circles recorded in the county alone since 2005
This latest creation was reported last week having appeared overnight in a farmer’s field on Normanton Down, less than 1 kilometre from the world famous Stonehenge monument

Tramore Beach, Horn Head Peninsula, Dunfanaghy, County Donegal, Ireland
On a beautiful evening last week I carefully watched the sea mist & clouds for several hours, which showed no signs of rising or retreating. Never have I witnessed clouds lay so low over the ocean for so long before. I knew if there was a vibrant sunset then the light may reflect off the low lying cloud tops, hopefully giving an ethereal look to the surrounding landscape.
Due to my proximity in north Donegal I knew there was one perfect location to capture this unusual sunset that evening, on the stunning Trá Mór Beach…… I can just imagine the mythical lost kingdom of Tír na nÓg resting under these calm atlantic waters next to Tory Island in the distance 💚

The Wolkeringer Mühlbach flows through an intensively used agricultural area. It flows into the Pfatter, a tributary of the Danube. I quite liked the atmosphere that evening.

Tullagh Bay, Dunaff - Clonmany, Inishowen, County Donegal, Ireland
This panoramic photo captures an extremely wide view of the stunning Urris Valley. From the top of Binnion Hill overlooking Tullagh Strand, Dunaff Head & Raghtin More Mountain there are so many areas of beauty to be found here on the north coast of Inishowen.
I have captured this scene in the past however, it was winter so the mountains were snow-capped and the sun was setting directly behind Raghtin More mountain. I’ve since seeked a new version with no snow and the sun setting more to the right over the ocean. I wanted this newer version to also be even larger than before, showing a little more of the valley to the left leading back to Clonmany and also showing the little beach to the far right of the scene. These were all the little things either missing or aligned differently on my first photo, so my new personal challenge was set to recapture this newly visioned scene
Firstly, I returned during summer which obviously meant there was no snow but the main reason being that the sun would set more to the east during summer and as you can see has thankfully set over the ocean. This scene once more proved to be very challenging to capture mainly due to the enormity of the area and capturing 12 separate photos, then combining and fitting all into this one panoramic photograph. Timing it with a vibrant sunset, calm weather conditions and only a 5-minute window to capture all was nerve-wracking 😓
I won’t complain though as everything aligned and worked out extremely well for me on this evening. The weather was perfect with little wind and I captured my photo exactly the way I wanted it! sometimes things do go perfectly to plan 🙏 I hope you enjoy it as much as I've loved every moment capturing it

The day ended at around half past eight in the evening on the north-south line on 19 June 2025 with 6193 155, operating for BoxXpress, pulling container train DGS 69224 from Kornwestheim Rbf to Weddewarder Tief. The photo was taken in Eastern Hesse near Nüst.
Camping in the desert stillness under cliffs two hundred feet tall and millions of years old helps a great deal with perspective.
This photo spot near Nüst in the Haune Valley can only be used in midsummer, because only then does the sun turn far enough for trains travelling north to also receive front lighting. On 19 June 2025, it was already shortly before 8 p.m. when I was able to photograph 193 824, running for Rurtalbahn Cargo, in front of DGS 47142 from Györ to Bremen Rbf. Interestingly, the block train loaded with brand-new Audis and Cupras from Hungarian production is one of the services I have photographed most frequently (unplanned). Various pictures of it were taken between Bavaria and Bremen, and now there is one from the middle of Germany as well.
Große Aufregung in Laaber.
Great excitement in Laaber. Normally, the use of a drone tends to arouse curiosity and you get lots of interested questions from passers-by. On the evening of 6 April 2025, however, things were different and I was confronted by a number of angry residents of the Upper Palatinate village. The small aircraft on the retaining wall was eyed very suspiciously. De-escalating conversations with precise explanations of what I was doing and the fact that I could easily be identified as a German citizen eased the situation. To save the neighbours' honour, it should be said that the town of Laaber had recently suffered a series of burglaries, which is why people take a closer look at strangers. I left it at a picture of the 6193 132, which passed the retaining wall with the intermodal train DGS 40656 from Episcopia Bihor to Wanne-Eickel, uniformly loaded with semi-trailers from the freight company LKW Walter.
Today’s post is brought to you by the color blue. A color I love but it’s less and less seen here in drought-stricken Utah. Savoring the color from last Saturday’s shoot.

The shores of the Great Salt Lake were once a resort destination. People would come to The Great Saltair for a day of water play, food, music and more. These days, with the lower water levels, it stands empty most of the time aside from the occasional concert. I still consider it a scenic spot when the light is nice.
Happy Mother's Day to all Mums!
I dedicate a photo of this unique heart-shaped Copse of Love to my mother - with best wishes!
Check out last year's photo of this place!

Another well-known service that DB Cargo has ceded to private competitors is the transport of the so-called Red Bull trains. Characteristically consisting of two-axle sliding wall wagons, these trains transport the famous energy drink from its production site in Vorarlberg, Austria, to the North Sea ports for further export overseas. The first part of the journey is handled by ÖBB, then taken over by Captrain. On the evening of 19 June 2025, I was able to photograph one such service at Nüst in eastern Hesse. 186 156 transported the Red Bull train DGS 89264 from Ulm Rbf to Imsumer Deich.
Currently rented out to ÖBB are some of the SBB Cargo Vectrons leased from Railpool. One of the locomotives from this contingent is 6193 107, christened ‘Bodensee’, which I spotted on 5 March 2025 with a container train in the pre-spring Altmühl valley near Hagenacker.
