The Bubbler in collaboration with the Neighborhood Intervention Program (NIP) and Prof. Faisal Abdu ́Allah present an art exhibition by Madison youth. "Mask Off!" brings together UW-Madison staff, The Bubbler, and teenagers of greater Madison to celebrate identity, alter egos, and human complexity. Based on 15 weeks of workshops with diverse artists, the project emphasizes the multi-vocality and diversity of the youth who are often at the forefront of the nation’s friction. The art, made by the teens, tells stories about the multiple facets of self-imagination versus determination by society. The alter egos that the teens developed reflect upon their adaptation to challenges encountered in their every day lives.

Although there is some debate over the effectiveness of the masks to protect against infection and a citywide shortage of masks still the face covering has become started attire for most people in the city.

Grotesque sea-monster mask above an oval-shaped window at the west end of Birmingham Cathedral.
Birmingham's church of St Philip was designed by Thomas Archer in 1709 and largely finished by 1715 (the tower being completed 1725). The original stone weathered badly so the exterior was entirely refaced in the 1860s (though the tower had to wait till 1958) and a new larger chancel replaced Archer's shallow apse at the east end in 1883-4 (by J.A, Chatwin).
The church was designated as the cathedral of the new Birmingham Diocese in 1905 and is one of the only 'parish church cathedrals' which hasn't undergone any structural alteration since its change in status. It does still possess the feel of a grand city church, rather than a cathedral in the true sense.
The real treasure of this church however is revealed within, as the interior is dominated by four superb stained glass windows by Edward Burne Jones dating from the 1880s (three in the apse, one at the west end). These are perhaps Burne Jones's finest achievements, and intentionally so, for it was in this very church the artist was baptised.
These 9 year olds were looking at sight and vision so we decided to create our own crazy glasses and masks. They were all so individual, just like the kids! Mrs Turner had a shot too!

I had a blast photographing people trying on my masks at the Ojai "Art-in-the-Park" this weekend. I love to see how the combination of a mask and a person creates a new entity, more than the sum of its parts, and how that new being is released and expresses itself...

More or less completed! He is fitted for my face but not really wearable as there are no breathing holes and it's a little heavy (3 lbs). The mane is made from wool that i dyed and shaped. The teeth will get a satin sheen.
I'm really happy with this and will be making more yokai (japanese monsters) and some others....

Cast glass
Born in Japan, the actor and dancer Ohta Hisa (1868–1945) performed under the name Hanako, meaning ‘Little Flower’. She was 33 and still relatively unknown when she came to Europe to perform. Inevitably, these performances reflected a Western idea of Japan.
Her fame was based on her compelling enactment of seppuku or harakiri, a Japanese suicide ritual traditionally reserved for men.
Ohta and Rodin met in 1906, when she performed at the Colonial Exhibition in Marseille, an event held to bolster support for France’s colonial conquests. Rodin was fascinated by her stage persona. After early realistic portraits, he tried to capture the look of anguish she displayed on stage, an expression so tense that she could not hold it for longer than half an hour.
The Musée Rodin holds over 50 busts and masks of Ohta, more than any other sitter. While in most of his sculptures Rodin focused on the body, he only depicted Ohta’s face, an allusion perhaps to the masks used in Japanese theatre.
It was not until Rodin’s death that Ohta finally received the two masks he had promised her in return for her labour.

The Making of Rodin
(May – November 2021)
Working at the turn of the 20th century, Auguste Rodin broke the rules of classical sculpture to create an image of the human body that mirrored the ruptures, complexities and uncertainties of the modern age.
This major exhibition is the first to focus on the importance of plaster in his work. Although Rodin is best known for his bronze and marble sculptures, he himself worked as a modeller, who captured movement, light and volume in pliable materials such as clay and plaster.
This presentation evokes the atmosphere of the artist’s studio. Plasters casts in all sizes show how he continually experimented with fragmentation, repetition and joining existing parts in unconventional ways. Some of his best-known works were influenced by this process, including The Burghers of Calais, which is represented here by the newly restored original plaster.
With the process of making at its heart, the exhibition also considers the complex dynamics of the workshop, as well as between the artist and his models and collaborators, including fellow sculptor Camille Claudel, the Japanese actress Ohta Hisa, and the German aristocrat Helene Von Nostitz.

Teens attended a workshop that took on a fascinating Egyptian theme with Cobra shapes, pyramid masks, and other Egyptian designs.
Funerary Mask
Colombia; Ilama (Calima) 5th-1st century BC
Calima face masks are among the oldest objects known from Precolumbian America. They are attributed to the Ilama culture, named after a chief who ruled the area soutn of the modern town of Restrepo. Some of the masks are very naturalistic, their contours conforming to the natural shape of a human face. The forehead, nose, cheeks and chin of the mask this mask are hammered in deep relief. The openings for eyes and mouth and the tie holes along the sides suggest that the mask was worn - perhaps during important ceremonies - before being placed in a burial.
