This is a lifesize papier-mâché mask bought from a local craft store. The intention being to use it as an interesting substrate to which mosaic tiles can be applied. I gave it a thick coating of PVA to give it extra strength. The black is actually fabric mostly to give the inside a softer feel; meaning it 'could' be worn if the situation arose.

 

I've already begun appling silver mirror tiles to the surface to the main facial elements and a flowing design to the forehead.

The first layer on my paper mache masks is in the form of wet newsprint (the artist sketching type). I use this to prevent the glue and paper from sticking to the clay. No glue is used in the layer until the mask is fully covered. Then I carefully apply a light layer of diluted glue to hold this layer in place.

Market Square is a traditional and historic shopping district in downtown San Antonio. The district is the largest Mexican shopping center in the city. It is called El Mercado by the locals.

 

The Shanghai Museum is considered one of China's best modern museum and houses a collection of over 120,000 pieces within its premises.

 

A collection of masks used by various ethnic groups reflect their respective beliefs. Once a mask is put on, the performer takes on an entirely different persona depending on the character portrayed.

 

The colourful TIbetan Cham masks strike fear into evil spirits and keep them at bay while the simpler yet no less elaborate wooden Nuo masks depict the colourful characters of Nuo opera.

5th January 2013. There was some sort of protest/demo going on in Birmingham. No one seemed to know what it was about or why these masks were worn. These pics were taken ln Victoria Square but apparently they popped up at various times at various places in the City Centre.

 

I had a blast photographing people trying on my masks at the Ojai "Art-in-the-Park" this weekend. I love to see how the combination of a mask and a person creates a new entity, more than the sum of its parts, and how that new being is released and expresses itself...

As Hong Kong Coronavirus/COVID-19 surpasses fifty cases in the city so most people don a face mask to protect themselves from the virus. Although there is some debate over the effectiveness of the masks to protect against infection and a citywide shortage of masks still the face covering has become started attire for most people in the city.
