handmade slipknot masks

Mexican mask from Teotihuacan Mexico. 5" made from cut stones, Obsidian.

I like the TM Pro Goggles method of fastening. The elastic strap has a plastic clip fastener so the mask can be very easily removed.

Apparently - I haven't tried this yet - the goggles can be detached from teh mask section to act as a pair of stand-alone goggles. Handy if it works.

Sorry about the poor quality of this pic, but it was scanned from a 6x4" print, which is all I have.

This mask was slightly cracked in the firing, and so I was able to keep it! I was pleased, because at the time I couldn't afford the luxury of not selling anything I made.

So I hung it outside the front door on the wall, were it lasted about a week before it vanished about noon one day!

I reported it to the police to get a crime number, and the next day I received a most interesting missive. The police only have a few fields in their lost and stolen property database: vehicles, valuables, money, animals, and other.

The letter commiserated on the theft of my 'other', and assured me that should my 'other' turn up, they would let me know!

It never did!

The wind mask is/was made of stoneware clay, coloured with iron oxide and fired to 1280C, in an electric kiln. It measured about 14" across.

Iberia Mask Festival Lisbon

This mask is for wearing in ritual dances and ceremonies and is unusual in its colour. The man who sold it to me came from Mozambique and said his masks were from that country. Makonde people have lived for centuries on both sides of the Ruvuma River which forms the Tanzania/Mozambique border.

The Bubbler in collaboration with the Neighborhood Intervention Program (NIP) and Prof. Faisal Abdu ́Allah present an art exhibition by Madison youth. "Mask Off!" brings together UW-Madison staff, The Bubbler, and teenagers of greater Madison to celebrate identity, alter egos, and human complexity. Based on 15 weeks of workshops with diverse artists, the project emphasizes the multi-vocality and diversity of the youth who are often at the forefront of the nation’s friction. The art, made by the teens, tells stories about the multiple facets of self-imagination versus determination by society. The alter egos that the teens developed reflect upon their adaptation to challenges encountered in their every day lives.

Brenda's craft this week was to make animal masks. The kids did a great job of decorating their masks and they looked so cute wearing them!

Green demon design that I have used before.

The Gas Mask Bling is an extension of an icon study. I was experimenting with the meaning that the icon took on when applied to various objects. First there were newspaper boxes, then an entire place setting, and now a gaudy hip-hop chain.

Here is the eye as I begin to roughly make cuts with an Exacto blade. I only go so far with the blade as I will finish and smooth with a rotary tool (i.e. dremel).

third eye and all.

As Hong Kong Coronavirus/COVID-19 surpasses fifty cases in the city so most people don a face mask to protect themselves from the virus. Although there is some debate over the effectiveness of the masks to protect against infection and a citywide shortage of masks still the face covering has become started attire for most people in the city.
