Calima face masks are among the oldest objects known from Precolumbian America. They are attributed to the Ilama culture, named after a chief who ruled the area soutn of the modern town of Restrepo. Some of the masks are very naturalistic, their contours conforming to the natural shape of a human face. The forehead, nose, cheeks and chin of the mask this mask are hammered in deep relief. The openings for eyes and mouth and the tie holes along the sides suggest that the mask was worn - perhaps during important ceremonies - before being placed in a burial.
This Thai Demon Mask from the Museum at Wat Phummarin Kudi Thong is one of a series of different "faces" that you will find on the masks.
Used in Thai plays and dance.
