Of all my masks those made by Paul Barrett-Brown are my favorites.

Sometimes it's okay to feel down,

make sure to keep true.

Left alone from the rest,

all for that silent sound.

I was inspired to create this Photoshop mask after speaking with Russell Preston Brown of Adobe Systems. He showed me a very simple mask, made from a Photoshop box. The mask had two holes for the eyes and a large hole for the mouth. We both thought it would be cool to enhance this simple Photoshop masking idea and show how to make a feathered mask with Photoshop CS4. This bird mask was made entirely out of Adobe Photoshop CS4 boxes. Masking, feathering, packaging...it's all there!

A torch-light procession during celebrations for the Maskal ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was just a coincidence that I happened to be there at the right time, en route from Nairobi to Cairo, checking out possible new overland routes for the safari company I was working for at the time.

While moving, I came across my mask I never pulled from the mold, my "still good yellow paint", and air compressor. Fits better than my first one after 6 years.

Masks have always been a main feature of the Venetian carnival. Traditionally people were allowed to wear them between the festival of Santo Stefano (St. Stephen's Day, December 26) and the start of the carnival season and midnight of Shrove Tuesday. They have always been around Venice. As masks were also allowed on Ascension and from October 5 to Christmas, people could spend a large portion of the year in disguise. Maskmakers (mascherari) enjoyed a special position in society, with their own laws and their own guild.

We all wear masks of some kind during our daily lives.

Here, Ashi removes her mask and questions the creature she became known as a Daughter of Aku from Samurai Jack while wearing such a mask.

Bronze miniature masks--the first three of the second set of ten. Slowing down as I am spending more time doodling with the elements..very therapeutic! Yes, the 'blob' on the lip is deliberate--going for the hand-me-down repaired look. Will explore that further...

All Done! I wish I had had the luxury of time to take photos of all four masks, properly lit & displayed, but I was literally wrapping them in bubble wrap as they were "coming off the assembly line" and packing them in the box for shipment. Theatre director has promised to send me photos of the masks being used by the actors on stage. I'll be looking forward to seeing those!

Large white box is now in the capable hands of the folks at UPS, slated for delivery next Wednesday Sept. 5th. It's been an intense two weeks for sure. 'Twas fun sharing the step-by-step process online too. Now I need to put my feet up and not even poke my nose in the workroom for a day or two.
