Mask painted by no.1 son

I was inspired to create this Photoshop mask after speaking with Russell Preston Brown of Adobe Systems. He showed me a very simple mask, made from a Photoshop box. The mask had two holes for the eyes and a large hole for the mouth. We both thought it would be cool to enhance this simple Photoshop masking idea and show how to make a feathered mask with Photoshop CS4. This bird mask was made entirely out of Adobe Photoshop CS4 boxes. Masking, feathering, packaging...it's all there!

A Zara window display at 59th Street & Lexington Avenue during a very rainy day. Those are real water droplets. I held my umbrella between my chin and shoulder while holding and aiming my camera with my hands. I have to get back to this when there aren't 40-50 mph winds and the heavens dropping oceans down on us.

Testing my camera with creep masks.

Naatie American mask about 1900. The frearsome , skeletal appearance of Bakwus, the Wild Man of the Woods, indicates that ahe is Chief of the Gjhosts. He is a smalolo, humna-like creature who lives deep in the woods.; Occasionally, he emerges to dig for cockels , his favourite food,on desterted beaches.

This was done for a Mask challenge.

We all hide behind different masks for different people. Always afraid to show our true 'face'. That's me anyhow....

Are we so afraid to let our true face show? Hugging our real self close inside? What about you? xx

WIT: In spirit of Mardi Gras (and wishing that I was in Nawlins this weekend), I took out my collection of Mardi Gras junk, which I have a box-full of them :) This is just a macro shot using my 100mm macro and a lighbox on a table. The photo light bulb that I'm using is not strong enough (notice the shadows), however, even with the help of natural light (coming in from the windows although it's dreary and raining outside) and flourescent lights. I used a tripod and took several shots (different settings and setup). This seems to be the best out of the bunch at f/4.0 and 1/15s. Being from Louisiana, this reminds me of "my old corner of the world" and the plenty of festivals that we have. I had originally going to post landscape pictures of my current corner of world (Northern California), but opted with this one instead.

A sneaky video of a woman wearing a mask - I found this to be quite strange, as we do not have them in England.

an earlier mask, circa 2003 or 2004

This picture was shot at the Museum of Modern Art in August 2021.

This is one of my faves! The hood and beak is a soft reptile-embossed leather that I free-form quilted with felt under leather. The face has random brass studs and a bell hanging from little chain on left cheek! More bells/ studs adorn the edges of hood. Evokes a "Tolkien-esque" mood!

Okay, one more: I consider it coincidence if I dress up as Allison on Halloween. I mean, for crossdressers like me, Halloween can be every day of the year. But I did have this Mardi Gras-style mask in the back of my closet, just a little something I found at Ragstock on State Street a couple of months ago. So, I tied this mask on, replaced and readjusted my wig (that's why it seems a little bit teased out), and snapped this picture. Kinda exotic, dontcha think?

(Oh, and while it's not technically a pair of sunglasses, a mask like this can create an air of mystery for the wearer just the same.)

Sarah en Abraham :-)

When you reach the ripe old age of fifty in Holland it’s said that you’ve either “seen Abraham” or “seen Sarah.” This tradition can be traced back to the Biblical characters, Abraham and Sarah, who had a son at a relatively old age. The phrase “Abraham gezien hebben” is actually rather appropriate, as it’s based on a passage in the Bible, John 8: 56-58. In this particular passage Jesus is engaged in discussion with the Jews, who ask him: “You are not yet fifty but you have seen Abraham?” Jesus replies “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am”. The Jews are clearly surprised at this answer, because Abraham had in fact died before Jesus was born.

In the Netherlands turning fifty is considered an extremely special occasion and one that’s typically marked with the installation of a large life-size doll (of an elderly man or woman) in your front garden, often with a corresponding sign that reads “Abraham 50 jaar” (Abraham 50 years old) or “Sara 50 jaar” (Sarah 50 years old). Of course, this delightful Dutch tradition also ensures that the entire neighbourhood knows exactly how old you really are! There are even masks that youcan use when you are 50 years of age :).
