STONE FACED, in wauchope cemetery. 02

a very old stone face on top of a sandstone memorial stone. in the 1800's, wealthier families would some times employ a local artist to sketch the face of the deceased person, which would be given to the stonemason who would carve a face in stone of that person. which would then be mounted on top of the headstone, or carved into the front of it, on some big family stones there may be four or more, with one on each corner facing north, west, south, east, i suppose it is a bit like putting a photograph of a loved one on a tombstone nowadays, wauchope cemetery. langholm, dumfriesshire, scotland. view large
