I admit it to the world- I am a fried chicken whore. This was among the best I've ever had. Not only was the chicken outstanding, the mashed potatoes and cole slaw were perfect. If you ever find yourself in Hays Kansas- Please go to Al's Chickenette. Great chicken and a fantastic neon sign
While in Buchanan for the civil war battle reenactment, I walked through old town Buchanan. Much of the architecture dates back to late in the 1800's and early in the 1900's. As I drove down the main street I saw three women reenactors in hoop skirts standing against an old brick building looking like they belonged in 1862.
I stopped for lunch at a place called "The Fountain". It was an old brick pharmacy with a soda fountain and a few booths. The tables were all carved with lover's initials and special dates. I had a chicken fried steak with pepper gravy for lunch along with some mashed taters and sweet tea. They served real butter with the bread too.
Mmm mmm mmm!

This cake measured 12x6 inches. First time I'd ever set a table with a pair of tweezers!

‘What’s wrong with these people? I asked myself. It’s still the same cheese. But after shuddering at the thought of accepting a cupcake from the Soldiers of Odin, I could understand how the prospect of eating food that bore the label of an enemy ideology could induce a feeling of physical disgust. The crumpled plastic packaging showed that the soldiers had purchased their cupcakes at the supermarket, rather than baking them themselves or delegating the task to a female minion. They were the same cupcakes as the ones that I might buy myself, just as the halal-certified cheese was still the same cheese.’ —Shakira Hussein

This year's thanksgiving dinner was a turkey-less affair, given that none of the four people involved is especially married to the idea of having turkey, and lamb sounded a lot yummier. So here it is: Leg of lamb stuffed with wild mushrooms and greens, Porcini stuffing strata, and of course mashed potatoes. That's it. Well, until I post the picture of the Pumpkin-Spice cheesecake and Christopher's best apple-pie ever, that is.
