Spot illustrations to go along with a Portland Mercury article, real or fictional. My initial idea was to do places in Portland that are open 24 hours, but that seemed a hard task to complete. I found an old article from the Mercury entitled "The Best of 3am" and decided to run with it. While I first wanted to illustrate 6 logical places, I couldn't resist the humor in some of the places they highlighted, such as free balloons at a car dealership and the best dead skunk on the highway. I know the illustrations can use a little more finessing, but I was mostly unsure about how to arrange each illustration. I'm also wondering if the typefaces work well together.
The colors in the original file are less saturated, but for some reason they're showing up differently on flickr.
Dilly's not quite sure why I am using this laptop here but she was rubbing her face on it so everyone would know it's hers!

Arrowhead marking her territory.
Let me introduce you to Arrowhead of Ranthambore National Park in Rajastan India. She is the matriarch of the choicest area of the park teeming with game from Samba and spotted deer to wild boar and all manner of birds and wildlife. She’s called arrowhead because of the arrow mark on her left cheek, somewhat like what machli, her grandmother, also had. Arrowhead is only eighteen months old ( at time of article and 5 years old now) but wonders she has done has left everybody awestruck. She has taken over the Zone 3 (region around the lake) of Ranthambore National Park, which has been ruled by her mother for five years and is the largest territory in Ranthambore.
Ranthambore National Park one of the most famous national Parks in India was once the hunting ground of Maharajas. Sprawling over an area of 1334 sq km, Ranthambore National Park revolves around the 10th-century Ranthambore Fort. Scattered around the fort are ancient temples and mosques, hunting pavilions, crocodile-filled lakes and vine-covered chhatris (burial tombs). Tiger population is somewhere around 60. (Our Naturalist indicated that there were now closer to 35 females and 30 males with approx. 15 cubs / kits.) And even if you’re not able to spot tigers then here to see is plenty of other wildlife and more than 300 species of birds.
I feel fortunate in that we saw this celebrated female as the Naturalist, Raj indicated that about 60-70% of the visitors don’t get to see one.

These markings brought back many memories for me. It's a very Hong Kong (perhaps British) thing that one sees on slopes. I've no clue what they mean. They could be electricity supply system related, or maybe information about the hillside slopes.

A ceremony marking the 104th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire that claimed the lives of 146 workers in 1911. The building in which they worked -- now used by NYU -- was locked from the outside to prevent union organizers from contacting the employees. Some died from the fire, others jumped from the building's upper floors and suffered fatal injuries. Union and civic leaders gathered to address the legacy of workplace safety and protection under laws since enacted.
