Amazing find at Hughenden Manor. During WW2 the basement of the manor was used as a secret map-making base, cod-named Hillside and was at the top of Hitler's hit list.
Over 100 people were based here drawing up maps of Germany and occupied Europe.
This was in the ice bunker next to the manor.

I decided to try playing around with the tone mapping scripts available for the gimp. This was the first one that turned out ok.
From Flightradar24 - two London flight paths on the 29 June - a day when there was no cloud all day.
The Carpenter Bypass Road area has become a popular destination for the non-motorized travel community, most notably, mountain bikers. What started approximately 15 years ago as a relatively unknown trail system that a few locals utilized has today become a well-known recreation opportunity enjoyed by large groups and individuals from the local and regional mountain biking public. Other users include trail runners, hikers and some local equestrian users. The proximity of this trail system to the Eugene/Springfield area lends itself as an outstanding recreation resource, and provides the public with a high quality, all-season trail experience, filling a critical need in the area.

The cake was a recreated map design from the Legend of Zelda, with a castle on top, complete with Zelda and Link perler figures. Yes, there is a Portal cake sign on the wall (there was a matching one, with "Also" in front of the image, on the pillar next to the Groom's cake).

Mapping Mainz. Ein innovatives und interaktives Stadtportrait für Mainz
Mainz und seine Anrainer-Vororte werden auf künstlerische und innovativer Weise neu vorgestellt.
Wie sehen Mainzer, Besucher und Touristen die Gutenbergstadt Mainz? Fest verankert im Mainzer Leben sind die vielen gut dokumentierten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt und ihrer Geschichte. Aber Mainz hat noch viel mehr zu bieten. Sehenswürdigkeiten ganz anderer Art werden in dem Projekt des Masterstudiengangs Gutenberg Intermedia dem Betrachter und Leser vorgestellt. Zehn wenig bekannte Orte und leise Monumente werden in der Arbeit „Mapping Mainz – ein fragmentarisches Stadtportrait“ individuell auf ihre Geschichte, Eigenheiten und mögliche Zukunft portraitiert.
Jeder Ort steht für einen der zehn Stadtteile von Mainz und der AKK-Gemeinden, die direkt am Rhein liegen. So wird das ehemalige Eislager der Mainzer Brauerei in Weisenau, die grüne Brücke der Neustadt einer Streichholzfabrik in Amöneburg gegenüber gestellt. Dabei entstehen detaillierte, mit Bild, Video und Tonaufnahmen kommentierte Stadtportraits, die stille und versunkene Orten zum Strahlen bringen.
Basierend auf der situationistischen Idee des Dérives, des ungeplanten Umherschweifens durch urbane Räume und einer künstlerischen Methodik, haben die Studierenden für sie unbekannte Orte in Mainz und Umgebung aufgesucht und sich diese durch intensive Recherche angeeignet. So haben sie Zeit- und kunstgeschichtlichen Merkmale des Ortes erforscht, seine Gegenwart ausgelotet und schließlich ihren gefundenen Ort gestalterisch neu interpretiert und mit Zukunftsvisionen versehen. Ihre jeweiligen ortsspezifischen Analysen haben sie anschließend in zwei medial unterschiedlichen Ausführungen – einer großformatigen Siebdruckarbeit und einer interaktiven Website – zu dem psychogeografischen Stadtportrait „Mapping Mainz“ zusammengeführt. Fragmente aus Geschichte, Gegenwart und Zukunft in Bild und Ton – bilden hier eine einzigartige Sammlung, die sich je nach Sichtweise zu ortsbezogenen Chroniken verdichtet.
Während die 7 x 7 m große Siebdruckarbeit dem Betrachter einen ersten Überblick über die gesammelten Ortserkundungen vermittelt, ermöglicht die Website www.mappingmainz.hs-mainz.de dem Betrachter ein interaktives Erleben dieser urbanen Räume und lässt ihn auf eindrucksvolle Weise den Vorgang des Umherschweifen durch interaktives Erforschen nachvollziehen. Überraschende und vielschichtige Informationen und Interpretationen kann der Betrachter in dem Online-Archiv zu jedem Ort nachlesen und sich akustisch auf die Orte und ihre spezifischen Geräusche einlassen. Zu sehen und zu erleben waren die Arbeiten vom 9. – 12. Mai 2015 in der Aula auf dem Campus der Hochschule Mainz, Lucy-Hillebrand-Strasse. Individuelle Fragmente der Installation wurden als limitierte Siebdruckedition zusammengefasst.
Grundlegendes Thema der Master-Projekts war die Ideenfindung für eine Gestaltung der Zukunft. In die Vergangenheit zu blicken bedarf eines bedachten, analytischen Blicks. Sich die Zukunft zu denken, ist weit weniger klar zu definieren. Die Herausforderung für die Projektgruppe in dieser Studienarbeit war es auf den fundierten Kenntnissen und Fakten, die die Trend- und Zukunftsanalysen vorgeben hinaus, individuelle Lösungen für Orte in Mainz zu finden. Dabei wurden gesellschaftliche, sozio-ökonomische, technische und gestalterische Aspekte an den Orten angewandt und durch szenische Dialoge ergänzt. So wurde jedem Ort und Stadtteil am Rhein eine mögliche Zukunft projiziert. Der Blick kann mit Hilfe der Website und der zahlreichen Artefakte, die für das Projekt zusammengetragen wurden, von der Gegenwart und Vergangenheit des Ortes in die Zukunft getragen werden. Über fiktive Monologe und dokumentarische Tonaufnahmen für und von den Orten werden Mainzer Monumente auch auditiv aufbereitet.
Intermedial und interdisziplinär manifestiert sich das Projekt als gestalterisches Realisierungsprojekt. Das Zusammenspiel von analogen und digitalen Medien, also von Siebdruck, Grafiken, Zeichnungen und Infografiken mit animierten Grafiken, Video- und Tonaufnahmen auf einer interaktiven Website zusammengefasst, bilden den Kern der Projektinnovation. Die verschiedenen Anforderungen der Medien in einem ganzheitlichen Gefüge zusammen zu bringen, ist bei dem Projekt „Mapping Mainz“ hervorragend gelungen.

Il progetto Mapping Marina nasce dall’esigenza di mappare spazi invisibili o non riconoscibili all’interno del quartiere Marina della città di Cagliari. Questi spazi eventuali, occupanti la sfera pubblica, sfuggono al controllo dei piani urbanistici: solo attraverso le pratiche urbane di risemantizzazione dello spazio sono visibili i nuovi significati. Grazie ad un’attenta mappatura delle pratiche urbane il progetto può assumere una connotazione di supporto alla conoscenza, rivolta sia al singolo cittadino che, in maniera più estesa, alle pubbliche amministrazioni che si trovano ad operare in questo contesto. La fotografia è uno dei mezzi attraverso i quali alcuni di questi fenomeni possono essere messi in luce.

The artist Philipp Geist (Berlin) shows his video installation „ Liquid Memory“ in the church ruins and in the sacristy of the former Minorite cloister in Oberwesel. In his installation Philipp Geist picks out the element water as a central theme and puts this in the immediate connection to the historical place and the Rhine Valley. Water and time are the constants in the oeuvre of Philipp Geist. He works with the media videoinstallation, audio/visual performance, painting and photography. His projects integrate space, sound and moving image.
With this installation, the artist renounces the use of canvases and projects directly onto parts of the former cloister facade, the ruins and onto fog as a transpartent and volatile projection-ground. An interaction between the concrete and tangible wall and the clear evaporating projection will bring together time and space.
Geist will exhibit his long term water-project ´Riverine Zones´ in the former sacristy. This video-space installation takes the viewer on an exploratory expedition through international rivers. The artist makes a world visible which is so near and yet so distant to us. With an underwater camera he roams through all zones of the river: the ground, the deep or shallow water and the surface. Thus originate Geist´s partly minimum-puristic, partly colour-intensive, dream-like and shadowy-breakable image compositions. Geist covers– from the water perspective– also the bank area, from which, using another English term -„riverine“- the project receives its name.
Profile:
Philipp Geist, born in 1976 in Witten, grown up in Weilheim (Bavaria), lives in Berlin since 1999. He works internationally in the media video installation, audio visual performances, painting and photography. Among others he has exhibited in 2002: Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. In 2004: Sonar Festival Barcelona, Mutek festival Montreal, Dissonanze festival, Rome. In 2005: Zurich, Winterzauber, video installation. In 2006: Salon Noir, New National Gallery Berlin. Der Berliner Künstler Philipp Geist (1976) zeigt seine Videoinstallation 'LIQUID MEMORY' an der Klosterruine und in der Sakristei in Oberwesel (Oberes Mittelrheintal) im Zeitraum vom 01. - 04. Oktober 2009. In seiner Installation thematisiert Philipp Geist das Element Wasser und setzt dieses in den unmittelbaren Zusammenhang zu dem geschichtlichen Ort und dem Rheintal.
Wasser und Zeit sind die Konstanten im Werk von Philipp Geist. Der Künstler, Autodidakt arbeitet international in den Medien Videoinstallation, Audio/Visuelle Performance, Malerei und Fotografie. Seine Projekte sind in erster Linie gekennzeichnet durch ihre Integration von Raum, Ton und Bewegbild.
Bei der Installation verzichtet der Künstler auf den Einsatz von Leinwänden und projiziert direkt auf Teile der ehemaligen Klosterfassade, die Ruine und auf den transparenten, flüchtigen Projektionsgrund Nebel. Es entsteht ein Zusammenspiel zwischen der konkreten, greifbaren Wand und der transparenten, sich verflüchtigenden Projektionsfläche des Nebels. Der sich temporäre Projektionsgrund Nebel steht dabei für das ungreifbare Moment der Zeit und damit auch der Geschichte, und Erinnerung. So entwickelt Geist einen Dialog mit dem Ort und seiner künstlerischen Arbeit.
In der Sakristei wird Geist sein langfristiges Wasser - Projekt Riverine Zones ausstellen. Die Video-Raum-Installation ''Riverine Zones'' nimmt den Betrachter mit auf eine Entdeckungsreise durch internationale Flüsse. Der Künstler macht eine Welt sichtbar, die uns so nah und gleichzeitig doch so fern ist. Mit einer Unterwasser-Kamera streift er durch alle Zonen des Flusses: den Grund, das tiefe oder seichte Wasser und die Oberfläche. So entstehen Geists teils minimal-puristische, teils farbintensiven, traumartigen und schemenhaft-zerbrechlichen Bildkompositionen. Geist bezieht auch, aus der Wasserperspektive, das Ufergebiet mit ein, dessen englische Bezeichnung „riverine“ sogar Namensgeber des Projekts wurde.

Auburn University forestry researcher John Gilbert recently created an instructional booklet, “Mapping Your Land: An Overview for Landowners,” to help landowners use five online mapping program. It allows landowners to utilize maps, aerial photography, topographic layers, soils information, data collected with GPS units and even a visual simulation, such as adding images of trees on open fields.

The overall project goal is to develop a proof of concept that autonomous underwater vehicles can conduct image surveys. This image data would then be post-processed with various neural networks to detect and record the numbers of fish and mussels of certain species. This system would then be used to determine the populations of these species across the great lakes.
