They say that Meadville is the Tool and Die capital of the world. Our town has lots of machines grinding, cutting and stamping out other machines. This little park has a nice display of old machines that were once used to apply an insane amount of force on a very small area.

 

I played around with Photoshop to brighten things up. Do you think this series looks too "Photo-shoppy"?

Yeah, damn, this picture could have used some cropping on the left. Hhhmm. Well, too late now. (Eh.)

 

Anyway: bubble gum machines rule!!! Ok, they did when I was still a child.. What's funny/weird is that lately, I've discovered lots of them around in the district where my workplace is. (And I find it weird because I didn't think that lots of people were still using them.. but apparently they are. ??!?!)

Major Leslie Frederick St. John Davies MC, 20th. Squadron, Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry), formally 2nd. Lt, Norfolk Regiment.

Born on 23rd. June 1893, the son of the Rev. Arthur Charles and Ellen Augusta Davies.

In January 1904 the family were living at Antingham rectory.

Leslie was educated at Gresham's School in Holt, Norfolk, from March 1904 until July 1911, and Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

At the outbreak of war Leslie joined the Norfolk Regiment. He was mentioned in dispatches and in 1916 he was awarded the Military Cross.

In 1918 his parents address was 9 Bracondale, Norwich, Norfolk.

Leslie died on Sunday 10th. November 1918, aged 25, of malaria at Aleppo, Lebanon. It appears he refused to seek treatment until it was too late.

He was buried on the morning of the Armistice, originally in

Aleppo Protestant Cemetery, and subsequently reburied in Grave: 291 at Beirut War Cemetery, Lebanon with the personal inscription

"SERVANT OF GOD WELL DONE!"

 

10864 Private Walter Edward Empson, 7th. Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment).

Born in 1892 at Bradfield, Norfolk, the son of Walter and Emma Jane Empson, nee Hammond. The family subsequently moved to Southrepps Road, in Antingham.

Enlisted in Norwich, Norfolk.

Walter died of wounds on Saturday 2nd. November 1918. He is buried in Grave: VI. F. 19. at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, Pas de Calais, France.

  

22329 Private George Ralph Whitwood, 1st. Battalion, Norfolk Regiment.

Born on 15th May 1890 at Antingham, the youngest of 15 children of Jeremiah and Mary Ann Whitwood, nee Bullimore, of Letter Box Cottages, Antingham.

Husband of Elsie May Whitwood and father of Joyce Millicent Whitwood, born 3rd. April 1916.

Enlisted at Chelmsford, Essex.

George was killed in action, aged 27, during the capture of Oppy Wood, near Arras, on Thursday 28th. June 1917. He is buried in Grave: II. C. 20. at Roclincourt Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

 

53024 Rifleman Ronald Walter Whitwood, 8th. (City of London) Battalion, Rifle Brigade, posted to London Regiment (Post Office Rifles), formally 13573 Private, Norfolk Regiment.

Born on 10th. April 1894, the son of Henry, a domestic servant/gardener, and Sarah Whitwood, nee Cork, of The Hill, Antingham.

Enlisted at Norwich, Norfolk.

Ronald died of wounds on Friday 26th. July 1918, aged 24. He is buried in Grave: XXVII. R. 4. at Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France with the personal inscription,

CHRIST WILL GATHER IN HIS OWN

 

"Have mercy Lord and let perpetual light

shine upon them."

It's not just phone booths you don't see anymore. Coin-op tampon machines aren't stocked anymore. Do we have cell tampons now?

This is a mural of the 1975 and 1976 Cincinnati Reds. They were referred to as The Big Red Machine. They led the Reds to back to back World Series Champions. The mural hangs in Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Oh.
