That's why representation matters. And you're part of creating that representation. Yes, you. Just think...
If you've ever dreamed of being something other than what was expected of you, or expressed ideas and feelings different than the people around you, then you know what it feels like to be different. Now imagine you didn't have anyone that looked like you, thought like you, spoke like you, or expressed themselves like you in your life, in your neighborhood, on TV, in the movies, in businesses, in the government, etc. That makes it incredibly difficult to realize your worth and possibilities — being you is okay and you can be whatever you want. You have a unique way of being in this world.
Being your true self does benefit you in many ways. It also helps others see what they can be. It gives them something to strive for. It shows them whatever they're thinking, is possible. It shows them that they belong.
Be the representation for others, just by celebrating what makes you different.

our Art Gallery is getting a renovation - is getting Gehry-fied actually - and this is the crane around back. i thought it was strange that even the crane has been decorated (see the figure in yellow and there's one in red you can just catch a glimpse of) and has a sign on it that says "art matters".
