A poignant moment in the pre-season calendar came with the home game against Hope Valley League side Holmesfield. This match was staged to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital's teenage cancer unit, in memory of Holmesfield player Edward Gray who had lost his fight with the disease the previous year. A mixture of reserves and first teamers played out an entertaining win for Sheffield.

Elisabeth Rosenthal the American medical doctor specializing in epidemic disease, scientific and environmental matters has published an article in the New York Times titled ‘As Biofuel Demand Grows, So Do Guatemala’s Hunger Pangs’. Rosenthal states “In the tiny tortillerias of this city [Guatemala City], people complain ceaselessly about the high price of corn. Just three years ago, one quetzal — about 15 cents — bought eight tortillas; today it buys only four. And eggs have tripled in price because chickens eat corn feed. …Recent laws in the United States and Europe that mandate the increasing use of biofuel in cars have had far-flung ripple effects, economists say, as land once devoted to growing food for humans is now sometimes more profitably used for churning out vehicle fuel. In a globalized world, the expansion of the biofuels industry has contributed to spikes in food prices and a shortage of land for food-based agriculture in poor corners of Asia, Africa and Latin America because the raw material is grown wherever it is cheapest. …With its corn-based diet and proximity to the United States, Central America has long been vulnerable to economic riptides related to the United States’ corn policy. Now that the United States is using 40 percent of its crop to make biofuel, it is not surprising that tortilla prices have doubled in Guatemala, which imports nearly half of its corn. At the same time, Guatemala’s lush land, owned by a handful of families, has proved ideal for producing raw materials for biofuels. Student Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion hosted a Consent Matters: Students Against Violence Walk to demonstrating a commitment to ending dating violence. Students also participated in hand painting and stamping station where they left a "paw print" in the battle against dating violence.

Swallows and wasps are always fighting over artistic license. Swallows add a little mud here and there and then the wasps come by and partially cover the swallow's work. Every once in a while, the result is quite striking.

I am currently reading The Kite Runner. It's been sat on my bedside table for over a year. I'd been putting it off because I thought I'd find it heavy going, but it's not at all.
It's very readable and thought provoking, and I've certainly learnt more about what's been happening in Afghanistan. I haven't finished it yet, but decided to buy another of Khaled Hosseini's books today.

The idea behind this is that while the heroes from the comic I'll do soon are super powerful, I need a way to make them feel threatened. I always go back to Batman's ideas or those in Unbreakable. The laws of physics still apply. No matter how strong you are, if the molecules around you can be made to be completely still, then you can't move. You'd be in an air cage, basically. And that's what this thing is. It's a matter hardener.
