Farming Matters informs readers about sustainable, small-scale farming. It offers discussions, background to the news, opinions, research findings, and practical examples of how sustainable, small-scale farming contributes to providing food security, social justice, a healthy environment and development.

Farming Matters is for policy makers, researchers, practitioners, educators, farmers, and everybody else interested in agriculture and development.

Farming Matters is published four times a year and has subscribers in more than 150 countries. It is the global edition of the worldwide AgriCultures Network, a network of eight organisations, of which the other seven members publish regional editions, in six languages. Together, the magazines reach more than 50,000 subscribers. For more information, see

I love the way the closest is in focus and there is a nice progressive blur the further away they are!

No matter how messed up you think you are, there will always be someone that loves you and still thinks you're amazing.

Swallows and wasps are always fighting over artistic license. Swallows add a little mud here and there and then the wasps come by and partially cover the swallow's work. Every once in a while, the result is quite striking.

Day 33.

It's finally show time. SIGGRAPH exhibition started today, and the booth that we designed is finally up and running. The design of the booth is not what I envisioned, and there are lots of area that need to improve, but the clients are happy and my boss is happy, so overall it's a successful project. Even during the installation, many people had came over and commended the booth. Those are definitely reassuring words, because once you have invested so much time in a project, you get emotionally attracted and it's hard to step out and look at the work passively anymore. And you know that you can't see it passively, that's why you started to doubt yourself. So, it's great to have a pair of fresh eyes and some compliment.

But, what I found the most rewarding is just to see people interact with the booth. It's a great feeling when someone is using your design; and that's all it matters, isn't it?

The idea behind this is that while the heroes from the comic I'll do soon are super powerful, I need a way to make them feel threatened. I always go back to Batman's ideas or those in Unbreakable. The laws of physics still apply. No matter how strong you are, if the molecules around you can be made to be completely still, then you can't move. You'd be in an air cage, basically. And that's what this thing is. It's a matter hardener.

In recent decades, developments in software and hardware technologies have created dramatic shifts in design, manufacturing and research. Software technologies have facilitated automated process and new solutions for complex problems. Computation has also become a platform for creativity through generative art and design. New hardware platforms and digital fabrication technologies have similarly transformed manufacturing, offering more efficient production and mass customization. Such advances have helped catalyzed the maker-movement, democratizing design and maker culture. This influx of new capabilities to design, compute and fabricate like never before, has sparked a renewed interest in material performance.

We are now witnessing significant advances in active matter, 3D/4D Printing, materials science, synthetic biology, DNA nanotechnology and soft robotics, which have led to the convergence of software, hardware and material technologies and the growing field of programmable materials.

This conference was about the emerging field of active matter and programmable materials that bridges the worlds of art, science, engineering and design, demonstrating new perspectives for computation, transformation and dynamic material applications.

If over the past few decades we have experienced a software revolution, and more recently, a hardware revolution, this conference aims to discuss the premises, challenges and innovations brought by today’s materials revolution. We can now sense, compute, and actuate with materials alone, just as we could with software and hardware platforms previously. How does this shift influence materials research, and how does it shape the future of design, arts, and industrial applications? What tools and design processes do we need to advance, augment and invent new materials today? What are the key roles that industry, government, academic and public institutions can play in catalyzing the field of programmable materials?

This two-day conference consisted of a range of talks and lively discussion from leading researchers in materials science, art & design, synthetic biology and soft-robotics along with leaders from government, public institutions and industry.

Philadelphia - January 1, 2016

The Mummers' strutted along Broad Street once again in Philadelphia's New Year's Parade. A group of approximately 35 members of the local Black Lives Matter activists voiced their opinions at certain locations along the parade route.

The Black LIves Matter protest was relatively peaceful, with vulgar chants directed at the police. Two members were arrested for attempting to disrupt the parade as they attempted to block the parade route.

I took several of these serious models with non-model people walking by. Then I decided that the emptiness of the walkway said most of what I wanted--even though there is a couple coming out of the vanishing point. I can't say I don't like the world of fashion and exorbitant beauty, even though I know that the forlorn pseudo-dismay of these models is best described by emptiness. It is vanity: theirs and mine. Maybe I just like sparkly things, maybe I have a part that is still hooked by the dream of it all. One thing for sure is that this kind of beauty really does stop at the skin. As long as I remember that, it is pretty fun to see what they (the designers) come up with. In reality they tell very similar stories over and over again and people (me too!) lap them up with the fervor of soap-opera addicted not-s0-busy-bodies. How many ways can we see LV or Gucci stirrups? How many ways can a dead head hear Sugar Magnolia. We seem to be joiners, we human, want to belong. We find distinction in our areas of similarity. "I am different from you" because I have this hand bag (that one million other people have) or this camera or because I get this music that only one million other people get, but not you.

Also, this store is part of a really amazing piece of architecture in Vegas. All the stores are as expensive as possible, of course. The lines of it look like the architect attached a pencil to a slinky and made a building out of a play session.
