18th JUNE, LONDON – The MongoDB User Group meetup at Skills Matter for a talk by William Candillon on JSONiq: the SQL of NoSQL. JSONiq is a high-level query language that enables developers to productively develop and execute complex queries on top of MongoDB. This is not your grandma’s SQL. Along one of the paths I frequently walk, there are several exercise stations that consist of some piece of equipment--in this case, an inclined, playground-like board--and exercise directions. There are two things I notice every time I see a sign. The larger text--it looks like Helvetica Neue Black or some sort of Helvetica Black to me--has held up well over time where the directions themselves, set in what appears to be some form of Garamond (my best guess is Garamond 3 by Linotype), have worn away where the glyphs are thinner. Over time the serifs and substantial portions of letters are gone. It's still readable for the most part, but it's not pretty. This is, in a phrase, why typography matters.

a closer look for tessa to have a macro shot - a feature she just discovered during the overland trip and ended up to be her favourite feature of her camera by the end of the trip. geckos tend to do a "michael jackson" move when they move their limbs forward and backwards like moonwalking, which is quite hilarious when you see it first hand.

Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. -Psalm 37:24

The clock tower at Westminster, which contains the bell known as Big Ben, is an iconic landmark in London, England. It is traditionally thought that the melody of the tower chimes was taken from the tune of “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” from Handel’s Messiah. Words were eventually added and put on display in the clock room:

Lord, through this hour be Thou our guide;

So by Thy power no foot shall slide.

These words allude to Psalm 37: “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand” (vv. 23-24 nlt). Notice how intimately involved God is in His children’s experience: “He delights in every detail of their lives” (v. 23 nlt). Verse 31 adds, “The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip.”

How extraordinary! The Creator of the universe not only upholds us and helps us but He also cares deeply about every moment we live. No wonder the apostle Peter was able to confidently invite us to “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). As the assurance of His care rings in our hearts, we find courage to face whatever comes our way.

Loving Father, thank You that every part of my life matters to You. Encourage me in my struggles so that I might walk in a way that reflects Your great love and honors Your great name.

No one is more secure than the one who is held in God’s hand.

GRAY MATTER

by Caroline Rutledge Armijo

8” x 8” x 8”

discarded book, newsprint paper, grave rubbings, thread, paste

NFS

This piece was inspired by my friend’s second brain surgery of the summer. I promised her that I would pray for her. And I did. Day and night. And my faith was faltering. A couple of weeks earlier, I had prayed all week for my childhood neighbor, who never recovered from a biopsy on his brain tumor. A few days later, my aunt’s sister died of a rare form of leukemia within ten days of learning she had it.

The next morning I woke to a story on the radio about the fish in the Potomac River. I thought, “It’s the water.” And a simple web search led me to discover a connection between cancer and coal ash, an unregulated substance that has long polluted the air and waterways in my hometown. Numerous loved ones who were battling cancer or had passed away stuck out in my mind. After I sewed the two sides of the book together, I needed something to give the book structure. Tucked between the pages of the original book are rolls of collected grave rubbings of members of my home church who passed away from cancer.

Our family friend Anita, more than any other person in the community, likely knew the full impact of cancer. She was the third generation to run her family funeral home. She was also a member of a weekly prayer group. As I look back of the dates, I have to think that her final prayers regarding cancer in the community were answered. On June 21st, the EPA decided to receive petitions regarding the unregulated coal ash. Anita passed away on June 22nd.
