In recent decades, developments in software and hardware technologies have created dramatic shifts in design, manufacturing and research. Software technologies have facilitated automated process and new solutions for complex problems. Computation has also become a platform for creativity through generative art and design. New hardware platforms and digital fabrication technologies have similarly transformed manufacturing, offering more efficient production and mass customization. Such advances have helped catalyzed the maker-movement, democratizing design and maker culture. This influx of new capabilities to design, compute and fabricate like never before, has sparked a renewed interest in material performance.
We are now witnessing significant advances in active matter, 3D/4D Printing, materials science, synthetic biology, DNA nanotechnology and soft robotics, which have led to the convergence of software, hardware and material technologies and the growing field of programmable materials.
This conference was about the emerging field of active matter and programmable materials that bridges the worlds of art, science, engineering and design, demonstrating new perspectives for computation, transformation and dynamic material applications.
If over the past few decades we have experienced a software revolution, and more recently, a hardware revolution, this conference aims to discuss the premises, challenges and innovations brought by today’s materials revolution. We can now sense, compute, and actuate with materials alone, just as we could with software and hardware platforms previously. How does this shift influence materials research, and how does it shape the future of design, arts, and industrial applications? What tools and design processes do we need to advance, augment and invent new materials today? What are the key roles that industry, government, academic and public institutions can play in catalyzing the field of programmable materials?
This two-day conference consisted of a range of talks and lively discussion from leading researchers in materials science, art & design, synthetic biology and soft-robotics along with leaders from government, public institutions and industry.

The Kennebec Valley Art Association in Hallowell invites Maine high school
age artists to submit three-dimension art work to *A Matter of Conscience*,
a juried art exhibition coming to the Harlow Gallery in March 19 – 28, 2010.
Submissions from individual artists, as well as group efforts are welcome,
as long as all participating artists are between the ages of 14-18. Works
must be original sculptural art (in three-dimensions) and may made out of
one material or a combination of materials, including but not limited to
ceramics or clay, wood, paper or cardboard, metal, assemblage, found
objects. Work may incorporate any combination of traditional visual arts
mediums such as drawing, painting, printmaking and may also include text,
video or other electronic, or sonic elements or mechanisms. Submitted work
must address some area of *social commentary*, for example political issues,
human rights, the distribution of wealth, global warming, the death
penalty, gay marriage etc., which the artist feels passionate about. The
submission process will utilize the internet in the interest of being as
green and paper-free as possible; for full details and instructions visit

The juror, Pennsylvania curator, artist and activist *Cheryl Harper*, will
decide which entries will be included in the exhibition, and will award
three cash prizes totaling $350. *Cheryl Herr-Rains*, an art teacher at
Gardiner Regional High School is the project coordinator.
*A Matter of Conscience* is meant to be a change from the typical high
school art show, which tend to focus on wall-hung works selected by art
teachers. The exhibition, presented in a professional gallery setting, will
give Maine students an opportunity to experience submitting and exhibiting
their art within a professional framework. Students will have the
opportunity to share their ideas on issues they care about in a public
forum, and participation will help individual students in building their
portfolios as they prepare to apply to college. *A Matter of
Conscience*has been made possible by a generous grant from the
*Evergreen Foundation.*

I'm getting my nerd on today, thanks to FGR.
I'm reading Slashdot and fixin' to reply to an article called "Mixed Outcome of Texas Textbook Vote". I must say, the outcome wasn't very mixed at all. If you read the replies to the comments though, you'd realize that mentioning any challenge to the religion called Darwinism is like poking a stick in an anthill.
I also must say, that if you don't read Slashdot—or even know what "slashdot" means—you are NOT a nerd and clearly not a geek. You're just a sorry, pathetic nerd-poser.
