Dental surgery is never pleasant, but once past the initial discomfort of the surgery, there is no doubt that Mason will be feeling a lot better. His lower right canine tooth was rotten and fractured to below the gum line. As the pulp was exposed contact with anything would have been painful.
The expectation was that a premolar tooth would also have to be extracted. Once the tartar was cleaned off the tooth, however, it turned out that what was initially thought to be a slab fracture was only a chip. No pulp was exposed and not being a source of pain, the tooth was left alone. This definitely makes a good case for the importance of dental hygiene.

Our original plan was to hike to Rainbow Lake and camp there but the boys were so tired after humping up the Mason Lake trail that we just camped at the first available spot. Luckily there was no one there.

Orchard mason bee (Osmia lignaria) is a half-inch-long, blue-black bee common in the western United States. Here one of the "girls" packs the final mud plug in the center hole, top.
Mason bees are not social and make neither comb nor honey, but they're wonderful pollinators, harmless to flora and fauna alike.
About twelve of the eighteen holes in our Mason Bee home are now populated. Here, one of the "girls" is packing the last mud plug in a hole. Each 5/16" by 4" hole is populated with about five cells--about three females and two males. In each cell is placed a supply of pollen and a single egg. Upon hatching, each bee will consume its stash of nectar, then pupate till late summer. The emergent adults remain in the cell through fall and winter. Come spring, the bees break through the mud plugs, mate, and then the males soon die, leaving the females to gather pollen, build nesting cells and populate them with pollen and eggs.
Each bee pupates in its individual cell, separated from its neighbor by the mud plugs. The males live in the outermost cells and emerge first in spring.
The cell plugs can be distinguished from those of mud wasps, as the latter have a smooth surface, whereas mason bee plugs are typically rough-surfaced.

I created the blocks, and the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, Summer Green Teens, stuffed the holes. Paper was used.
The bees will only lay their eggs in holes of a specific size; in this case 5/16 inch. Using paper also keeps open the option to harvest the bee eggs, clean them (of some potentially nasty mites) and store them until spring.
The blocks need their cool roofs, then they are ready to be hung outside in the early spring.
Thousand of Masons are expected at the Royal Albert Hall today to celebrate 300 years of the organisation.
Buttonhole Bag (Mason & Dixon Knitting) - This got felted even more and now is very thick and sturdy, though small. For the purple swirl, I took one strand of purple yarn, laid it out in the design I wanted and basted it down with matching thread. It felted up perfectly into the orange.
