The Postcard

The card was posted in Oxford on Wednesday the 21st. October 1903 to:

Miss Dorothy Durrant,

Ellerey Court,

Beulah Hill,

Upper Norwood,

London S.E.

The enigmatic message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Dear Dot,

I hope you are all

flourishing.

I am looking out for

'Rumbling Ebeneezer'

to send to Stu.

Until now my efforts

have been unsuccessful.

I have seen 'Mumblin' Mike'

but I do not know what it

is like.

Please give my kind regards

to all at Ellerey Court.

Yours very sincerely,

Horatio".

Tom Tower

Tom Tower is a bell tower named after its bell, Great Tom. It is over the main entrance to Christ Church in St. Aldates, Oxford.

Christ Church, as well as being a college, also embodies Christ Church Cathedral.

The square tower with an octagonal lantern and faceted ogee dome was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and erected in 1681-82 by the mason Christopher Kempster of Burford.

The tower of Dunster House at Harvard University is a direct imitation of Tom Tower, and stones from Christ Church are installed in one of the house's main entryways.

Great Tom is the loudest bell in Oxford. It weighs around seven tons. The original bell was moved from the 12th. century Osney Abbey after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. However, the original bell had caused problems since its casting, wearing out its clapper. (All clapped out?)

After a number of unsuccessful attempts it was successfully recast in 1680 by Christopher Hodson, a bell founder from London.

Aside from a student prank in 2002 when the clapper was lagged, Tom has sounded every night since WW2. It rings 101 times, which signifies the 100 original scholars plus one (added in 1663).

It is rung at 21.05, which corresponds to what used to be "Oxford time" (5 minutes later than Greenwich because Oxford is 60 miles west of Greenwich).

At one time this was the signal for all Oxford colleges to lock their gates.

The bell is only rung by swinging on special occasions.

The bell is the subject of a number of Oxfordshire Morris tunes and rounds, including "Great Tom is Cast", "Old Tom of Oxford", and "Bonny Christ Church Bells".

Llewellyn Thomas

So what else happened on the day that Horatio posted the card?

Well, on the 21st. October 1903, Llewellyn Hilleth Thomas was born. He was a British physicist and applied mathematician, best known for his contributions to atomic physics and solid-state physics.

In mathematics, his name is frequently associated with an efficient Gaussian elimination method for tridiagonal matrices—the Thomas algorithm. So now you know.

Death of Llewellyn Thomas

Llewellyn died on the 20th. April 1992.

The St. Giles Steam Fire Engine was built in 1908 and is one of the oldest horse drawn fire engines. Horsedrawn vehicles were the main form of transport from the early 1900's. Following a serious fire that completely destroyed the Parish Church at Wimbourne St.Giles in 1908, Lord Shaftesbury put in an order for a fire engine to be built by the well respected Shand Mason fire engine engineers.

Lord Shaftesbury wanted a steam fire engine that could be steamed in 9 minutes from cold with a pump that could pump 150 gallons of water a minute from a jet hose 150ft long and fire engine would be named the St. Giles Steam Fire Engine. The St. Giles Fire engine was stationed and maintained from the Wimbourne St. Giles House where it remained until 1946 during which time the fire engine was only once called out to put out a fire. Between 1946 and 1957 the St. Giles Fire Engine changed hands a few times and in 1987 the St. Giles Fire engine was purchased by its present owner Mr Rowan McDermont. It has made several public appearances including a spot on the TV show, Blue Peter.

There were four separate burial areas near Silver City, with a few very interesting stones remaining; some quite large and elaborately carved.

Mason Lake is at 4200 feet above sea level, and gets a lot of snow in the winter. While its May and spring down near Seattle the high country is still covered in snow. Since its been a kind of chilly April and May, there was fresh snow falling and the lake was socked in fog. Peaceful with no one around and the still silence.

Mason Fuller, circa 1880. Mason was the grandson of Mason and Fanny Oviatt. The 1880 census lists his occupation as a "Flouring Mill Operator" in Lorain County. The 1910 census found him in Oregon as a "Prospector." He later returned to Ohio and lived in Akron with his sister Minnie.
