Red mason bees (Osmia bicornis) are excellent pollinators and are solitary in nature. Females guard their own cells from other Mason bees, but are safe to be around as long as you respect their space. They form mud capsules around their eggs, and pack each cell full of pollen.

Penny Mason is a Launceston artist whose work has spanned four decades. She is devoted to exploring the idea of landscape within the context of Tasmanian history. Colour is a key factor in her abstract landscape works as can be seen in this beautiful painting, "Figuring Presence" (2013). It is an exquisite watercolour on paper.

She is not to be confused with the artist Penny Mason from Birmingham in the UK. Very different styles.

Abispa splendida

Subfamily: Eumeninae

Family: Vespidae

Superfamily: Vespoidea

Order: Hymenoptera

The genus Abispa comprises solitary wasps that are collectively known as the large mason wasps and the genus includes some of the largest wasps in Australia. They are sometimes incorrectly referred to as hornets but are not closely related to the social wasps of that name.

Abispa splendida is found throughout most of the eastern coast of Australia from northern Queensland down to the Victorian border.

They are solitary wasps and build mud pot-shaped nests in sheltered locations. The adults feed on nectar and this individual was feeding on Grevillea flowers. The females forage for caterpillars to provision the mud nests for their larvae.

This species was first described as Odynerus splendidus by Guérin in 1838.

On the way to the falls I found these little falls. Masons Falls is not accessible to the bottom, yet! That's for another day when I have more time, equipment and support in the mean time this will have to do...

Male of Megachile (Chalicodoma) parietina.

Technique: It was a cool day (18C) with partly cloudy skies and intermittent light showers -perfect weather to go looking for solitary bees since they'll have a tough time keeping their metabolism up. I got lucky and found this Mason bee semi-dormant in my Lavender.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I used an artificial flower to keep the background from being black.

Technique: After photographing this mason bee in my lavender I turned it loose in a plant on my patio while I went to have lunch. Evidently the little guy got active and had lunch as well, because this is how I found him later on that same afternoon. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I used an artificial flower to keep the background from being black.

Almost 60 degrees outside. Flowers are coming out and so are some of the bees.

The memorial's landscape architect was Faye B. Harwell and the sculptor was Wendy M. Ross. The sculpture is one third larger than life.

These emerged a few days ago, but they disappeared when the weather took a turn for the worse. Today was really nice and warm and got up to 62F. The bees were out again! There are several sub-species of mason bees, not all of them are the shiny green you usually see in photos.. They don't have hives, but instead nest in holes...either those made for them in "bee houses" that humans provide, or holes found in nature. Each female bee makes her own nest, and lays and cares for her own eggs.

It's been so warm that my Blue Mason Bees are hatching.

Tech Specs: Canon 90D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL mode, -1 FEC). This is a single frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Photo and Clarity in that order. ISO and shutter set to expose for the natural light in the background.

Umm, Teddy looks like he's being forced...just a little bit ;-) Nice PJ's Mason!

Mason Verger as he appears in Season 3 of Hannibal. The wheel chair is my design, though I used Dylan's idea for the katannas as arm rests. THis was painted by me.

Mason Lake is a pretty lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, reached by hiking the Ira Spring Trail from Interstate 90 east of Seattle. I camped there for a night and took this picture while sitting on a rock enjoying the evening light.

Mason was a very quiet, good-natured kitty.

The bad weather is really making it tough for the local pollinators. I was shooting this waterlogged Mason Bee when he started cleaning the water off of his fur.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 due to Highlight Tone Priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT ("A" flash head on a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Possibly a blue mason bee in a fence post.

We took the old Mason Lake Trail up to Mason Lake. Our progress was delayed by the many wonderful waterfalls along the way.

The George Mason Memorial is a memorial to Founding Father George Mason, the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights that inspired the United States Bill of Rights. Bouncing over the failed road surface by the bridge, not a suspension issue!

Late afternoon, March 24, 2015.

I finished my day exploring Rock Crest / Rock Glen and headed into town to stay the night at the 1910 Frank Lloyd Wright designed hotel.

In this sketch, I have drawn the corner of the Wright building on the right.

I was planning to already head east to Madison but the weather was lousy. In hindsight that was perfect, I got to stay in a great hotel and the next morning got another look around Rock Crest / Rock Glen.
