Shelter in Place, San Francisco, March 12, 2021

As luck would have it, I fertilized the soil around the ferns and palm tree just before the rains. Three days later as the sun emerged, I found a miniature forest of toadstools hiding in the shadows right where I had been working. Clover, too, had cropped up overnight — not the four-leaf kind but serendipitous enough to feel like luck had landed at my feet.

We need all the luck we can get these days, and good sense, too. Hearing the president say last night that everyone can be vaccinated by May made my heart soar - but that success depends on everyone taking the jab when they can get it, and following good practices until we’re all out of the woods. What’s that saying? ‘Without hard work there’d be no luck at all.’ It’s hard to keep doing what we need to do to get us to the end, but I’m going to keep my fingers crossed - maybe, with luck and good neighbors, I’ll be able to see my kids and grandkids this summer, if we can all just hang in there to the end.

Another long drive today, hoping to find a Snowy Owl, but out of luck again. Unfortunately, not a single one to be seen anywhere. I did notice that a very experienced birder covered some of the same roads as I did, and she had no Snowy Owl sightings posted on eBird for today.

Yesterday, I was out for about five and half hours, driving NE of the city. Takes roughly an hour and a quarter to get to the area I wanted, so by the time I allow the same for the return journey, it doesn't leave much time for searching the back roads. However, I covered the roads that I wanted, so it was worth it.

The only birds I saw were three Magpies, about 8 Gray Partridge flying fast across the road, and maybe half a dozen small birds that could have been House Sparrows, also flying across the road.

In October 2019, for once, I actually knocked on the door of the owner of the private grain elevator seen in this photo and another photo posted yesterday and asked if it was OK to photograph her old grain elevator, meaning from the road. However, she very kindly told me to go over to it and take any photos I wanted. This grain elevator is a different style from what one usually thinks of, when 'grain elevator' is mentioned. I like it, and it is quite a fine building. Yesterday, I just took a handful of photos while sitting in my car. The carved, wooden Snowy Owl always makes me smile.

Luck Be A Lady Tonight- Frank Sinatra

Lady luck was with me last night at the Super Bowl party. My pool numbers were 4 and 4 and the score at half time was 14-14 and the score at the end of the third quarter was 24-14 so I won twice!! Seattle had a lucky catch and seemed to of had the game won but as lady luck would have it, she changed her mind and went over to the Patriot's side for a lucky interception with 19 seconds left!!! Thank you Lady Luck...;)

Well, when you drive by Shiprock roughly 500 times a year as I do, then you're bound to get lucky once in a while.

And when you always carry a camera as I do, then you're bound to hit a pot of gold!

Young Desert Bighorn Sheep ram in the Superstitions retreating from what we believe was a party at a temporary watering hole.

The day before, a somewhat productive storm rolled through the area and left behind small pools of water in the washes. Our guess was this guy was at the tail end of the herd before he disappeared over the ridge.

Looking forward to finding some more of these majestic mammals -- on purpose -- once it cools down.

DDC "Good Luck"

I always consider a day when we get out at sunrise to be good luck. But, I was wrong on this day. I hurt my spine quite badly on this day, and I might need surgery. I have fallen hopelessly behind on everything since then. I wish it had been good luck.

After 20+ hours of driving from Michigan to Montana, myself and fellow photographer Michael Nowakowski finally made it to Montana. Rather than go to our hotel in Missoula immediately, we made stops in Billings and Laurel. While in Laurel, we lucked into a departing Laurel - Missoula mixed freight in great light. We gave chase, stopping in various spots along the way. Our last spot we "wanted" to get for the day was from atop Bozeman Tunnel. we got to the spot, and waited for the train to cut on its helpers and arrive. The delay was much longer than anticipated and while waiting, clouds started rolling it, the word "discouraged" doesn't describe my feelings well enough. However, in a moment of luck that is usually only found in sports movies, an opening of about 5 minutes came from the clouds, and like the convenient plot twist, the train popped around the corner into sight, and into the brief moment of sunlight that warmed the whole valley again just as the train was ready to enter the tunnel.

In the centre of the town of Virginia, almost hidden at the end of a long avenue flanked by trees, stands the historic Church of Ireland church.

A biography of the great 18th century English Shakespearean actress, Peg Woffington, records that in January 1753, while visiting the nearby home of the great dramatist Richard Sheridan, she attended church at ‘the parish church of Lurgan, near Virginy’.

The present church in the town was built in 1821, on a site overlooking the old Fair Green and dominating the roads that meet in the centre of the town. It was described in Lewis’ Topographical Directory as “a new and handsome structure in the Gothic style, with a fine spire surmounted by a gilt cross”. It was built with a loan from the Board of First Fruits but, shortly after completion, a storm blew down the steeple which, falling on the roof, completely destroyed it. It was soon rebuilt, but its run of bad luck continued when, on Christmas night 1832, the rebuilt church ‘was entirely consumed by fire, which was accidental”.

The church was rebuilt yet again and continued in use throughout the 19th century.

The Irish Ecclesiastical Gazette of 1881 records that the church was re-opened after many months of closure, for repair and improvement, almost entirely at the expense of the Marquis of Headfort. The old-fashioned pews were replaced, the choir was raised and choir stalls were built. A new pulpit, the gift of a number of parishioners, was installed to match the choir stalls and reading desk. A new Holy Table fall was made by ‘young ladies of the congregation’ and a brass lectern was also purchased. A new underground heating system was installed and a stained glass window in memory of Madeline Crichton, daughter of the Marquis, replaced what was referred to as ‘a hideous window of stained glass, of the worst possible taste and execution’!

Today this extremely tasteful church building, with its beautiful Yew Tree avenue and surrounding graveyard, overlooks the busy and lovely town of Virginia – itself a hidden gem, which has won the national Tidy Towns competition not just once, but twice, during the 1960s. It is often referred to as "Killarney of the North"

After my less than successful results at the north Lake Eufala bridge, I was resigned to being done for the day as I pulled into NB construction traffic on US69....from here I would have to trudge to the next exit, then flip around and head back south once again through the construction zone, this time with Steam Chase traffic added in. I was toast! No more shots on the day, other than whatever detail and night shots I could pull in McAlester.

However, as I headed north, I heard on the scanner some banter between the Dispatcher and the head-end of 4014 that the Steam Special had "dropped some blocks" (which I took to mean that there was still indication on the dispatcher board even after the train had passed the corresponding location) and while the train assured things were quite intact -- given that part of the crew could just literally walk all the way back to Kenefick to verify it was still there...

Ultimately the Steam Special was told that since they had dropped 2 blocks consecutively that they would have to stop and inspect. By this time I was turned around and once again headed south. Perhaps another shot on the day was still in the cards?!? Working south, crossing over the north Lake Eufala bridge on US69 now for the third time, then over the tracks which crossed from east of the highway to west, then they broke away from the highway for a bit, but I could still see the line of yellow dotted with black at the front cooling its heels in the distance.

As the track came back alongside US69, what a spectacle! Car after car after car after....seemingly endless and ongoing...parked along the shoulder and waiting. But, I *knew* where I was going - the south Lake Eufala bridge!

I had time to stop, park, hike over to the tracks, clamber up and over so as to get onto the sun side, then setting up my video and getting it started I got as close to water's edge as I could manage (there was not much room on that side) before the train smoothly, almost gliding, made its way across the 2nd crossing of Lake Eufala, this one on the South branch of the Canadian River.

Never would have expected to hit both ends of the Lake Eufala shots in a million years!

Luck isn't granted

To a selective lucky few

There's enough to go around

Enough for me and you

You must first believe

You deserve the very best

Believe that you are worthy

Believe that you are blessed

Then with eyes wide open

And a mind clear of view

Luck will reveal itself

For me, and them and you

I'd had visions of a lie-in this morning, no such luck...

With the Chelmsford P&R contract lost to Vectare in recent times, the fleet of E200MMCs First Essex possess for them have been at a slight loose end since.

3 vehicles (67190/1/2) have since gained the green 'EssexBus' livery and moved to Basildon, whilst a 4th (67194) has left for the same location in the base black P&R livery.

The remainder of the fleet for now continue to mill about on Chelmsford region duties in the base black livery.

On an exceedingly sunny and warm morning, SN66WKS (67195) climbs its way past Hockerill College on Dunmow Road in Bishops Stortford working the first Route 42A duty of the day to Chelmsford 10/07/22

Here is a closer view of the rattlesnake that I saw under a rock shelf in eastern Utah last Spring.

This is a Midget Faded Rattlesnake (Crotalus concolor). These are probably the least understood and most secretive rattlesnake species in Utah. I have better luck finding them at night than during the day and unlike other rattlesnakes haven't had any luck finding a den of them until last year when I stumbled on this spot while looking for other snakes and found 10 of these snakes at an obvious den on a very steep rocky hill.

This wishing well had a double dose of good luck for good measure.

Sometimes a crumb falls

From the tables of joy,

Sometimes a bone

To others

Day 88/365 Photograph Luck

Rest-day for me today.

A possible 6 trains on the cards in a busy itinerary and the day started well with the sun out and a forecast of much more to come.

Met up with Steve Brykajlo at Parton and we headed for the first target, the 08.42 CAR - BIF.

The diagrams had worked out perfectly today with 37401 up front for this and we see it head 2C40 around the cliffs at Micklam just seconds before some threatening cloud moved in for the kill.

As luck would have it I didn't need the hat nor the coat last Sunday. The weather was rather lovely for the time of year and in the sun it was pleasantly warm.

This was about the fith outfit I tried on.

The Goldfish Market on Tung Choi Street North, in the Mong Kok District, Hong Kong.

Located in the Kowloon side in the overcrowded district of Mong Kok, although quite frequented by tourists it is what used to be known as the heartland of the Hong Kong triad gangs.

Feng shui, also known as Chinese geomancy, is a traditional practice originating from ancient China, which claims to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment. Feng shui subscribers regard an aquarium of goldfish to be more than just a pretty face: it’s also an auspicious addition to one’s home that can bring good luck, so it’s no surprise that this popular pet trade is even more prominent in Hong Kong.

The Goldfish Market is lined on either side with several dozen shops and stalls devoted to the raising of many types of fish, from weirdly shaped goldfish to colourful tropical species with gaspingly high price tags.

Apart from the dozens of different types of brightly colored fish, you'll also find an Indiana Jones like collection of exotic pets; from snakes and spiders to lizards and turtles, as well as more mundane cats and dogs. Some of the rarer species – especially fish – can earn the sellers thousands of dollars.

Unlike across the border in China where markets like this are notorious for selling rare and unusual animals for food (and these are dying out), the Goldfish Market is only for pet purposes.

Usually have good luck with the gachas, but this time it threw out a pink.

Is it bad luck to have the BBQ (where you’re going to be cooking your Thanksgiving bird) parked underneath the metal ladder you were using to clean the gutters?

I sure hope not!

Maybe Hubby should rethink that arrangement.
