The period of quarantine required many of us to change our pace, but truthfully lockdown barely changed my rhythm. I was in lockdown long before Covid-19.
I started running outside with a camera not to escape the world but to confront it. Now, after 7 years and 14,000 kilometres, with a profound limp, I have concluded that by turning my eyes outward, I didn’t really find answers. Instead I found a larger set of mysteries.
I learned that you can only really know the world by pushing your body through it at ground level. A camera was extra weight, but it helped me focus and remember.
A key learning from all this was: Do the work you love and care about, not merely the work that the world rewards you for. Do less but do it well.

Being confined to my home and garden means I have to look both inward and outward for pictures. We have this attractive daisy in the garden that constantly beckons the camera eye. I know we were taught to go for odd numbers of things in a composition but I liked the even numbers here, what do you prefer? This was taken on a Panasonic GX8 with the 12-60mm Leica Panasonic zoom. If anyone knows the name of the plant we would be grateful to learn that.
This image of a lockdown walker was taken through the windows of a closed KFC. The yellow stripes are from a fence behind me reflected in glass inside the building. The picture was easy enough to take but I had to wait over a quarter of an hour for a figure to fill the gap and complete the idea, fortunately he had just the umbrella I had hoped for!

50% - the youngest has got into school two days a week. The eldest has not got in - no space. So we have her all day, every day. It could be worse!
Edinburgh Castle stands sentinel above the deserted Grassmarket, the old square far below in the Old Town, usually packed with tourists, diners, drinkers, shoppers, many of the bars boarded up while closed, for protection. Never felt it like this in all the years I have lived in this gorgeous city, I even miss having to growl at idiot tourists blocking the pavement to get out the way!
The ancient walls of this fortress have seen long centuries of history, war, religious strife, royal rivalries, and yes, plagues. It has seen them all come and seen them go, these walls still stand sentry over its city below, solid, enduring, grown out of the rock below. They whisper "this too shall pass".
This image was taken at Portland Bill, Dorset after the first lockdown ended. I changed it into black and white because I though it showed off the textures better.

Happy 200th day of lockdown, Melbourne.
The Black Bull, like many other pubs it has boarded up the windows to protect it in case of attempted theft or vandalism while closed for weeks. I quite understand why they would take that precaution, but it adds to the air of unreality in the city - cafes, bars, cinemas, theatres, schools, most shops (other than food and pharmacy) closed, hardly any people to be seen and windows boarded up.
Funny, I haven't drunk in here since my student days long ago, and generally don't drink in the Grassmarket at all these days - some nice, very old bars (some were centuries old even when Robert Burns came to stay in those inns!), but normally too busy with tourists and stag and hen parties. Now I am missing that loud, often vulgar life around them....
