Borgo Parrini is a small fraction of the municipality of Partinico, in the province of Palermo, characterized by colorful houses decorated in full Gaudì style.

The name derives from the fact that the fields around Partinico were bought by the Jesuit fathers in the 1500s. The name parrini, in fact, in Sicilian means priests.

So it was an area managed by the religious consisting of a small country church and a convent around which, later, the village arose with lodgings for the settlers and agricultural labourers.

In 1767, then, this village became the property of the French prince Henri d'Orleans who set up a farm for the production of a wine that soon became much appreciated and sought after. After the Second World War many of the inhabitants preferred to move to the city and the village remained almost uninhabited and therefore began its inevitable decline.

Today very few people live there who, however, in the last ten years have decided to give the village a new life. A local entrepreneur had the intuition to make it an unusual place and started a renovation of the houses in the style of the Catalan artist Gaudì.

The facades of the houses are colored with bright colors and writings, the walls have mosaic decorations and colorful tiles and the small village has become a very popular place for travellers.

La Scala dei Turchi is a rock face (cliff) on the coast near Realmonte, in the province of Agrigento.

It has become over time a tourist attraction, both because of the singular aspect of the pitches with inclined layers and white in color, and the mention in novels of Commissioner Montalbano by Andrea Camilleri.

The Scala dei Turchi has an undulating and irregular shape, with rounded and softened lines.

It consists of marl, a limestone sedimentary rock, of characteristic pure white color. It stands between two sandy beaches.

The name (“staircase of the Turks”) comes from the incursions of Saracen pirates, therefore Arab, but called “Turkish” by the local population. They found shelter there from the gusts of wind and a more secure collision.

A picture I shot when life wasn't as crazy. This area in Portland features buildings of an earlier time. Portland is known for their love of a good book. Powell's Books is a well-known dealer for book addicts. But only Cameron's Books & Magazines gets to boast the title of oldest bookstore in town. Established in 1938.

The wonderfully textured surface of the Mesquite Dunes, warmed by sunrise light, leads the eye south toward the rugged Panamint Mountains, Death Valley National Park, California. Clumps of Creosote Bush (Larrea tridentata) and bright fractured geometric hardpan deposits are visible in the foreground hollow.

I read that following the recent government shutdown, which happened to occur during the height of Death Valley's tourist season, the Park was heavily visited nonetheless. Without Park Ranger supervision, it turns out that some of these intrepid individuals began feeding wild coyotes for entertainment. Perhaps more distressingly, when Rangers finally returned they catalogued over 1,500 deposits of human feces in and around the more oft-visited locales. Whatever else can be said about America, we sure know how to keep it classy.

A modicum of colour, deliberately muted, on today's walk that required a face-full-of-dirt prone position - but not for long.

No lingering allowed they say, which begs the question, just how long is a linger?

Happy to find some bluebells in the near vicinity albeit a skinny patch.
