The Rock of the Virgin, in French Rocher de la Vierge is a rocky reef on the French Atlantic coast, crowned by a white statue of the Virgin with child surrounded by water. It is one of the most famous monuments in the seaside town of Biarritz.
The statue of the Virgin Mary was placed atop a rocky outcrop in the sea in 1864 to commemorate the safe return of local fishermen and to act as a patroness to support them in the future.
Due to Empress Eugénie's special affection for the picturesque former fishing village, the French imperial couple regularly stayed at the Biarritz Palace (now the Hôtel du Palais1), newly built as a summer residence. Of Napoleon III. the idea arose to connect the Rock of the Virgin with the mainland by means of a bridge. Gustave Eiffel implemented this plan in 1887 and created an iron bridge that can be walked on wooden planks; in addition, a tunnel was made under the rock.
Magredo" derives from the local Friulian "terra magra", ie arid and poor in water due to the presence of stones,. In summer the arid meadows of the magredi appear barren and burnt by the Sun defining a landscape similar to some desolate lands in the south or to the continental steppes of eastern Europe.
Nature reigns supreme in this part of the park. ‘Protected Paradise’ is a 12-hectare waterside oasis surrounded by forests. A transition zone to our local pride, the Hoge Kempen National Park, an exceptional natural area of 12,000 ha.
This place is also a sanctuary for black storks. Black storks are proud and fierce birds. Their elegance and call make them an attraction in forests, marshes and wetlands.
These birds were born in captivity and made a supervised trip to LABIOMISTA. They will participate in a return to the wild project led by LABIOMISTA in collaboration with Hoge Kempen National Park and UHasselt Field Research. It is from here that the young black storks will discover freedom and make their annual journey to find new wet and forested wild areas.
An ancient medieval village, the historic center of Teggiano (SA) is located on an isolated hill overlooking the Vallo di Diano, in Campania.
The construction of the Norman Castle dates back to the decision of the Sanseverino family to elect Teggiano as their stronghold.
The village houses Churches of great interest: San Michele Arcangelo, the Annunziata, originally Romanesque with baroque overlays, Sant'Agostino and San Pietro, both pre-Renaissance, and the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The historic center develops through streets and squares overlooked by noble palaces that span at least 6 centuries of history: from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
Teggiano, with Vallo di Diano, has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
An annual event is the "At the table of Princess Costanza" event, during which the village and its inhabitants recall the medieval era.
This splendid historical re-enactment is among the richest and most accurate in Italy.
Built in 1994, it takes place in the Macchiaroli Castle, which historically belonged to the powerful Sanseverino family.
In the three days of the event, the small municipality of Salerno goes back in time, to the days of the conspiracy of the barons who attempted to overthrow the Aragonese who had settled on the throne of the Kingdom of Naples.
The event attracts thousands of visitors every year eager to relive the ancient glories of the medieval era, including local cuisine, music, processions and historical reconstructions of real events, such as the marriage between Costanza da Montefeltro, daughter of the Duke of Urbino Federico, and Antonello Sanseverino, prince of Salerno and lord of Diano; or the siege of Teggiano in 1497 by the Aragonese, which saw around 150 figures perfectly re-enacting the battle with armour, weapons and shows.
------------------------

Description of the District
The Cross-Melville Heritage Conservation District is bounded by Sydenham, Melville, Cross and Victoria Streets in the former Town of Dundas, now the City of Hamilton. The district consists of 49 properties. These properties are predominantly single family dwellings with the exception of three churches.
Cultural Heritage Value of the District
According to the Cross-Melville Heritage Conservation District Study - Background Report the cultural heritage value of the district lies in its historical and associative value, design or physical value as well as the contextual value. The Background Report concludes:
“The Cross-Melville area constitutes a superb collection of buildings with particularly fine architectural attributes. Tree planted along the streets enhance the surroundings of individual buildings and provide expansive canopies over adjacent streets. Developed in the 1840s and 1850s as the first exclusively residential area distinct from the commercial and industrial locales of Dundas, this neighbourhood is associated with numerous prominent citizens, mayors and councillors, including George Rolph, William Notman, Alexis Begue and the Grafton family”.
🇬🇧 The palaver tree is a traditional gathering place, in whose shade people discuss community life, village issues and politics. It is also a place where children come to listen to a village elder telling stories.
Under the tree’s protective shade, a codified ritual takes place in which every gesture and every posture has its own meaning. The elders take their seats first, followed by the men according to their age and social status. The women, although they sometimes have a separate area, actively participate in the discussions in accordance with local traditions.
The chairperson, often the traditional chief or a respected elder, opens the session with ritual phrases. The floor then passes according to an established order, sometimes symbolised by a talking stick or another traditional object. No one may interrupt the person who holds the right to speak, creating a space of mutual respect and active listening.

Monsieur Hulot Beach
In the beginning, Saint-Marc was just a rural locality organized around a farm, a hydraulic mill and a chapel (this is where its name comes from). Gradually, from the 19th century, Saint-Marc was transformed into a small seaside town. Saint-Nazaire developed and the local bourgeoisie quickly took an interest in this little unspoilt corner of the seaside. so-called picturesque seaside era. The years pass, we rediscover the benefits of the sea, the train and the roads develop: access to the coast is thus facilitated and democratized. More modest villas are built in housing estates, orphanages and holiday camps are springing up here and there. At the beginning of the 20th century, the craze for the sea affected a more modest class which was looking for less mundane seaside towns: Saint-Marc then imposed itself. Victim of its assets during the Second World War, the Germans fortified this small piece of territory, built camps and requisitioned the villas. But very soon after the war, Saint-Marc once again attracted holidaymakers. Its very special seaside atmosphere seduces. Jacques Tati, moreover, is not mistaken: this is where he wants to shoot his new film in 1951: “Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot”!

A picture I shot when life wasn't as crazy. This area in Portland features buildings of an earlier time. Portland is known for their love of a good book. Powell's Books is a well-known dealer for book addicts. But only Cameron's Books & Magazines gets to boast the title of oldest bookstore in town. Established in 1938.

▶ "Nemophila menziesii — commonly known as baby blue eyes or baby's-blue-eyes— is an annual herb, native to western North America, in the forget-me-not family (Boraginaceae). It grows at elevations from sea level up to almost 6,500 feet (2,000 m), in many types of habitats, including chaparral, valley grasslands, and montane locales [alpine climate mountain slopes]. Nemophila menziesii can occasionally be found outside its native range as an introduced species [such as here in Georgia].
The specific variety, Nemophila menziesii var. menziesii, has bright blue flowers, ¼ to 1½ inches across (6–40 mm), with white centers dotted with black and 4 to 5 petals. It self-seeds under optimum conditions."

Equus przewalskii
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Przewalski's horse (UK: /ˌpɜːrʒəˈvælskiz/, US: /-ˈvɑːl-/, Polish: [pʂɛˈvalskʲi]) (Equus przewalskii or Equus ferus przewalskii) also called the takhi, Mongolian wild horse or Dzungarian horse, is a rare and endangered horse originally native to the steppes of Central Asia. At one time extinct in the wild, it has been reintroduced to its native habitat since the 1990s in Mongolia at the Khustain Nuruu National Park, Takhin Tal Nature Reserve, and Khomiin Tal, as well as several other locales in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The taxonomic position is still debated, with some taxonomists treating Przewalski's horse as a species, E. przewalskii, others as a subspecies of wild horse (E. ferus przewalskii) or a feral variety of the domesticated horse (E. f. caballus). It is named after the Russian geographer and explorer Nikołaj Przewalski.
Most extant horses described as "wild", such as the American mustang or the Australian brumby, are instead feral horses descended from domesticated animals that escaped and adapted to life in the wild. Przewalski's horse has long been considered the only remaining non-domesticated wild horse. However, a 2018 DNA study suggested that modern Przewalski's horses may descend from the domesticated horses of the Botai culture.
