The charming Austrian town of Melk is under the watch of the 11th-century Benedictine Melk Abbey, which, together with its 18th-century Baroque abbey church, sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the Danube.

Here it is, the world's largest dam on the world's 3rd-longest river. We were on the receiving end of many, many speeches from local guides about how wonderful the dam is, and how everyone who's been relocated (about 1.2 million people) is very, very, no, really, VERY happy with their new accomodations, which are new! and big! and clean! and bright! So, we were very, very reassured, and not at all suspicious at the total lack of negative, or even neutral, commentary.
The one exception to the lack of objective commentary was the guide on our ship, who gave an interesting power point presentation about the potential effects of the dam. The plusses include the clean electricity the dam will generate (orginally estimated to be 5-10% of China's annual energy need, but now it looks like it will be more like 2-3%, according to him) and no floods below the dam -- flooding in the Lower Yangzi has been a problem for millennia).
The negatives include the cost (roughly US$20 billion, I believe he said), the environmental effects (many of which are unpredictable, but the known ones include extinction of several species unique to the Yangzi and tempterature and precipitation alterations), and the fact that while flooding below the dam should be greatly reduced, now there's a much greater possibility of floods ABOVE the dam.
He did not mention two downsides that have received a lot of attention in the West, i.e. the desruction of thousands of unexcavated historical sites along the river after the water level rises, as well as the great reduction in the splendor of the Three Gorges, one of the most beautiful and spectacular natural sites in the world.

While our local guide discussed pharmacies in Cuba, a local man came up and decided to listen. But the discussion was in English, and the man only spoke Spanish. While healthcare and treatments are free in Cuba, you must pay for your prescriptions (at subsidized prices).
