What the Lonely Planet and many local guide books refer to as the Tomb Raider tree, which led Angelina Jolie through a secret trap door that magically transported her to Pinewood Studios in England. It's hard to tell, but there were about a dozen tourists jockeying to get photos of the tree. It too a lot of persistence and patience to get this shot without a crowd in the photo climbing all over.
When French explorers "discovered" the ruins of Ta Prohm, much of it had been reclaimed by nature. Though much of the grounds have been cleared and restored, many of the trees have penetrated and become integral parts of building structures (in many cases, the root structure of trees are the only thing holding some buildings up)
This is Lenka, our local guide in Praha. She is a Czech Anna Wintour in her chicness, but much warmer than I imagine the Vogue editor to be. Lenka spoke of life during and after Communism in the Czech Republic as she showed us the city. "In Communism, you had two choices - you go, or you go," she said when noting we were free to opt out of any part of her tour we did not wish to join. So enjoyed watching our local guide, the quick, lean Orlando, go through the forest trails. Great birds here: Blue-headed Quail-Dove, Gray-Fronted Quail-Dove, Key West Quail-Dove, Bare-legged Owl, West Indian Woodpecker, Cuban Green Woodpecker, Tawny-shouldered Blackbird, among others.

Our local guide, Annie Adair, brought tears to my eyes telling this story about the arch: At the end of WWII, the Germans were fleeing the Italian countryside. To slow down the advance of the Allies, they planned to blow up Volterra's beloved arch. Horrified, the citizens of Volterra hatched a daring plan. In the middle of the night, the women, children, and wounded veterans of the town crept to the arch and quickly and quietly dug up the cobblestones in the street. They then stacked them in the arch, effectively blocking entrance into the town from that point. When the Germans saw what they had done, they moved on and left the arch alone since their goal of creating an obstacle had been achieved. The courage of these Volterrans is still celebrated today. Annie told me a festival occurs to celebrate the preservation of the arch and that some of the children who helped dig up and stack the cobblestones in the arch are still alive and living in Volterra. What brave people!
