This is Steve when we went for our Boxing Day walk, we even had sunshine!!

The path behind me takes you down towards the river but we couldn't get past as it was flooded. Just over to the left, the ditches were flooded too and I feel sorry for the people in the few houses near here, wondering if they will be inundated. I don't think they have been yet.

I was out on the moors over Easter and had got some nice bird shots, no owl although I had been watching them. On Sunday evening I was above Meltham when I saw smoke rising near Marsden so I drove that way home. There was a blaze above Eastergate, a local beauty spot. I could see firemen with beaters and took some shots with the 600mm lens. I fully expected it to be brought under control overnight.

The morning after I was up at 6.15 and straight out. The first thing I saw was a giant cloud of smoke lit by the rising sun.I was heading that way so I went up Standedge and took a few shots. A large part of the moor was burnt black and the fire had fanned outwards.

I had breakfast in Marsden and a guy who lived near the fire said that the helicopter had arrived to begin water bombing so I went back up there. Over the course of the day the fire grew, driven by brisk winds. I could watch from a mile away and get great shots. I swapped lenses once or twice as the helicopter was picking water up at reservoirs close to the road. As sightseers arrived the helicopter would switch to a different reservoir, there are lots of nearby small reservoirs.

I reverted back to wildlife in the afternoon but headed back in the evening. A second helicopter had arrived by now. The blaze was national news and people were coming from miles around to watch the drama unfold. The amount of fire fighting equipment that had been deployed was unbelievable. I transferred a few shots to my phone and emailed them to the local paper. You often don't even get an acknowledgement that they received them they just appear on the website straight away and in the paper the day after. A fifteen hour day and 300 shots and it was back to work in the morning. The fire was still raging and stupid people were walking out to the flames in the dark even as the two helicopters were still water bombing.
