Tom Kettle was the husband of Mary Sheehy and brother-in-law of Hanna Sheehy Skeffington. Kettle was a vocal supporter of women's suffrage and a member of the IWFL. As MP for East Tyrone his support for the cause gave Irish suffragists a voice in Westminster. However at the Irish Party Convention in 1912 he failed to put forward a proposal that women should be included in the Home Rule Bill. He wrote: 'I feel it my duty to say for all Irish Nationalists, men and women, Home Rule comes first and everything else second'. He resigned from the IWFL because 'they had declared war on the Irish Party'.

In January 1913 Margaret Connery, Margaret Cousins, Mabel Purser, and Barbara Hoskins were given one month's hard labour for smashing windows in Dublin Castle. They were imprisoned in Tullamore. They went on hunger strike until they were recognised as political prisoners. Hoskins suffered heart failure on the sixth day of the strike and was immediately released. Although denied political status, the 'Tullamore Mice', as they were called, were allowed special privileges. Connery and Cousins, who had been imprisoned in both England and Ireland, declared on their release that 'the Irish prison system [was] more humane than the English'.

Local man's mammoth victory at the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton Canada. 5 gold medals is no mean feat and local man, Damon Kendrick, 46, did it all with only one leg, having lost his right leg to a shark when he was a teenage lifesaver. This photo has been placed here for no other reason than for me to be able to reference in from my blog.
