Craddock was raised the youngest of 13 children. His parents worked for Cone Mills, mostly at the White Oak plant. The family lived close to the bone.

“We never had anything,” he says, “but we never went hungry and we were all close.”

“We had an outhouse,” he says, chuckling. “Dolly Parton asked one time, 'Crash, did you have a two-holer or a one-holer?’ I said, 'Dolly, we couldn’t afford a two-holer.’ ”

The family shared a love of music and performing. “My daddy could tap dance, buck dance and he’d call figures on Saturday night,” Craddock says. “One sister played the piano, and another sister could sing.”

An older brother, Clarence, was a guitarist, and he taught siblings Billy and Ronald how to play and sing. When Billy was 12, Clarence took him aside and said, “Boy, I’m gonna tell you one thing — that guitar’s gonna make you a lot of money.”

As a youth, Craddock was captivated by country music. He and a friend would walk five miles along what is now Summit Avenue to downtown Greensboro to see country stars perform at the National Theater. He saw the Wilburn Brothers, Ernest Tubb, Eddie Arnold, Jimmy Dickens, Carl Smith, Sonny James and other legends in their prime.

“When I went to see those country shows,” he says, “as soon as they’d start to play the steel guitar, the hair would stand up on my neck and it wouldn’t go down till the last song was done.”

In 1957, Billy and Ronald formed the Four Rebels, a vocal group, with two friends. They performed at Fred Koury’s Plantation Supper Club — the upscale place for dinner and live entertainment in Greensboro during that time.

“We’d do 13 songs a night,” says Craddock, who sang lead, “and 12 of them were by Elvis Presley!”

He subsequently went solo, cutting his first records for the Sky Castle and Colonial labels (based in Greensboro and Chapel Hill, respectively). Koury, a local club owner and entrepreneur with connections in the record industry, helped Craddock land a deal with Columbia Records in 1959.

He recorded material in a rockabilly style for the label, scoring a minor national hit with “Boom Boom Baby.”

It was at Columbia that he was formally christened Crash Craddock. Though the nickname suggests some kind of kinship with car racing, it actually came from his days as a halfback on Rankin High School’s football team. They called him “Crash” for his ability to crash through any hole in the defense.

“We’d leave the huddle, and they’d hit me on the butt and say, 'Let’s get ’em, Crash,’ ” he says. “When the line opened something up, I was gone because I only weighed 135 pounds and couldn’t afford to get hit.”

I have been watching this little dunnock for a couple of months. As you can see, he has a damaged wing. But he can still fly well and he found a mate and successfully fed the chicks through fledging. When I first saw him, I thought he wouldn't last long. I was clearly wrong.

We live in a rural area with a conservative worldview and mindset. So I find the graffiti that's sprayed beneath a route 80 overpass, not far from our home, intriguing. That face is so emotive. Does anyone understand what's between the quote marks?
