Optare MetroDecker

899 - YJ16DFG

Seen on the Green Line 702 on North Street, Winkfield, Windsor.

I haven't been on a MetroDecker so I can't comment on the ride quality or interior, but I still can't get over the fact that the exterior looks strangely unbalanced and I can't work out why. It's like the side windows are too low on the bottom deck and too high on the top deck. Does anyone else share the same view?

Also, as a destinations guru, that huge amount of wasted space on the front rather grates with me. You've got all that empty space where you could have a massive, clear destination screen and yet the standard 140x19 Mobitec still wins favour. Perhaps it's because this is a demonstrator that it has a standard screen fitted for ease, but I really hope production models have bigger screens. Otherwise it just looks odd.

I have heard good things about it though - perhaps a nice livery will diminish the odd looks!

These flip flops were lined up outside a tiny school in Agonda. I liked how they were placed in such an orderly fashion with just one pair of adult flip flips in the middle ...

I think this is a Bright-line Brown-eye but not 100% sure.

The perils of mountain railroading are evident with the horrible damage to Clinchfield GP7 905 and SD40 3005, both of which were wrecked at Toecane, NC in December of 1974. A few months after the wreck on May 10th, 1975, the units are still sitting in Erwin awaiting disposition. The 905 would be traded into EMD in1977 for a newer GP38-2, and the 3005 would end up being retired and scrapped in Erwin. Photo by Jim Edmonston.
