A UP manifest approaches the South Saint Paul yard splitting a pair of searchlight signals in the process on a foggy day.
When someone mentions BNSF's Hi Line Sub I immediately think of the stretch of railway between Java and Summit Montana. With two main tracks clinging to a shelf above the valley, and numerous snow sheds this area is a great place to watch the passage of freight. Photography on this part of the railway can be challenging, with access to most locations gained by hiking, or more recently, from the air.
So on a typical October afternoon (note the lack of sun) a westbound Z train snakes along the shelf and through the sheds along my favorite portion of the Hi Line.
SOO 1003 crosses over Rt. 120 at the state line. Imagine what the passers-by thought when they saw this thing go over them.

As an eastbound tank train knocks down CP 503, CSL #31 grabs a cut of coils behind the former LTV (Youngstown Sheet and Tube) mill at Indiana Harbor before heading back west towards the state line.
The Chicago Short Line was formerly operated by LTV Steel and reorganized as the South Chicago and Indiana Harbor after the International Steel Group acquired the assets of bankrupt LTV. Now operated by Mittal, the railroad continues to operate with a roster of four switchers, all of which were delivered to the CSL in the '60s and '70s.

Though I prefer to use masks, I finally edited my brush for this by making a brush and using it with the eraser tool.
GIMP has a tool called the Paths Tool, which is like the Pen Tool in Adobe. I used it to create the brush used in this pattern.
Masking is easy; clipping masks are rather confusing. Just what I need to keep my mind occupied : )
