The tree row had been planted as a windbreak to prevent the former Hochwald railway (meanwhile discontinued) from snow drift.

Derelict Class 11 0-6-0 shunter 12083 rusts away in a siding at Market Bosworth on the Battlefield Line, 8th July 2023. In the thirteen years since I last photographed this locomotive the only thing that seems to have happened to it is it has moved around 50 yards to the other siding at Market Bosworth.

Locomotive History

In 1945 the London Midland and Scottish Railway began building at Derby works a batch of diesel electric 0-6-0 shunting engines. By the formation of British Railways on the 1st January 1948 fifteen had been completed and construction was continued by British Railways until 1952 when one hundred and six had been built. They were numbered 12033 – 12138 and were the forerunner of the class 08 design. They were later classified as class 11 and the class remained intact until May 1967 when 12104 was condemned. Withdrawals continued until October 1972 when the last of the class 12127 was withdrawn. 12083 was built in 1950 at Derby works and spent its entire British Railway career at Carlisle being withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in October 1971. Following withdrawal it was sold for industrial use at the Tilcon Quarry, Grassington, where it worked until 1998 when it was sold for preservation. Initially based at the South Yorkshire Railway at Meadowhall until the 1st August 2001 when it moved to Shackerstone.

Situated above the site of Fraserburgh station on the seaward side of the Links this prominent sculpture of steel girders and oak beams attracts attention to the white concrete pathway of the 'Walking Way'. The Walking Way leads from the Leisure Centre carpark to the crossing with South Harbour Road and hence to the former route of the railway line. The shape of the pathway was apparently inspired by the Line which ran along the bottom of the embankment directly below the sculpture. This installation is the work of sculptural artist Jane Kelly and was put in place in the summer of 2007. The steel and oak beams recall the rails and sleepers of the railway as do the oak beams which form a seating area with spectacular views over the Fraserburgh Bay.

The South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway opened a single line between Barnard Castle and Tebay in 1861. It was taken over by the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1863 and later the same year was absorbed by the NER.

It was built to take coke to the Cumberland & Furness blast furnaces and iron ore back to Cleveland; by 1874 much of the line was doubled. In 1910 five passenger trains were provided by the North Eastern Railway on weekdays, the journey taking 45 minutes and forty years later, under BR, the service was virtually the same.

It was also utilised by seasonal and excursion through trains between the NE and the Lancashire resorts of Blackpool and Morecambe. In LNER days it was mainly worked by NER class J21 and J25 0-6-0s, replaced in the 1950s by BR standard class 2-6-0s and 2-6-2Ts.

In January 1958 DMUs took over local services although steam was retained on summer through trains.

The line closed to all traffic in 1962.

British Railways very quickly lifted the track, demolished Belah viaduct and other structures, leaving only the section from Hartley Quarry to Appleby open to carry goods traffic until October 1974.
