(gosh my old desk's were ugly!)
my first attempt with Rainmeter and Enigma (hope I spelled that right) on the last screen.

I'm a programmer, so for me screen space is king. I run KDE on gentoo linux with a dual screen and 6 virtual desktops. I tend to run windows maximised, and each desktop has a basic function. The important things for me are keeping up to date with information and communication.
Desktop 1: I use Kontact (KDE PIM) to keep track of email/mailing lists, aggregate my rss feeds, hold all my contacts, and maintain a todo list.
Desktop 2: Two Konsole terminals with numerous tabs live here for compiling and other maintenance. Sometimes I run a second instance of Kdevelop here if I'm working on two projects concurrently.
Desktop 3: I do most of my programming here, the main Kdevelop window occupies the left screen, and the Assistant lives on the right screen to display documentation and API's.
Desktop 4: Xchat lives here for all my ircing needs.
Desktop 5: All browser windows get sent here, I have a session saving instance of Firefox permanently open for pages that I need, quick browsing tends to get done in a number of Konqueror windows/tabs I open on demand.
Desktop 6: amaroK lives here for all my music needs. A more perfect tricked out music player can't be found. Global shortcuts rock.
Miscellaneous: Kopete is my instant messaging client, Kget my download manager. BasKet (http://basket.kde.org) is a handy little tool that I use as a second todo list, and to hold any snippets of information that I might need.
I can access any desktop directly via the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+F# where # is the desktop I want, or I can move left or right through desktops with Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right.
Via Lifehacker I found a howto on Anna the Red's blog on how to transform ordinary radishes into Super Mario Power-up mushrooms.
Now I don't know if this will make kids enjoy radishes more to eat, but they sure like to look at them.
Here's Anna the Red's howto. Many warnings about do not cut yourself etc here. But this is actually easier than it looks and is explained. Go mad, make your own mushroom kingdom :-)

It sounds easy. "Let's offer blogs to our community." But there are hazards that lurk beneath the groovy social software veneer:
* Spammers never sleep
* Workload for training and support - many users will have only a vague idea how to use these tools. Imagine the risks with students required to maintain weblogs.
* Server and application maintenance - many IT units in academic institutions have little understanding or interest in sustaining tools such as these.
Key questions:
* What are the benefits of providing a blog service, when anyone can easily get their own blog elsewhere?
* Could a school offer a weblog service without hosting? What other services would be needed?
* What are the appropriate expectations of users of these services? What can reasonably be provided to them?
* Just how amenable is the culture of the academy to blogging and other social software practices?
* Are there special challenges in dealing with (ahem) 'academic temperaments' and technology? (Hint: you better believe it!)

Macro Mondays 12/21/09 - DIY: It's not photoshop, just pure DIY snowflake bokeh… Taken from Lifehacker:

Ingredients:
1) cutout lens cap - cutout any shape you want (about 2'' in diameter depending on how wide open you can go). For this one I cutout a single snowflake, but have done the heart version here:

2) cutout lens hood - you need to make a ring about 1'' deep
3) tape - attach the cap and hood
4) Fast Glass - I used my Nikon 50mm 1.4. Attach the hood/cap to the lens and shoot wide open.
5) Lights - I put christmas lights in the background to induce these bokehiful snowflakes.
Typography gift wrapping! This is a great technique for one or two gifts (like for a birthday). But for Christmas? Ugh. I won't do it again.

Install:
1) Add the required lines to your Rainmeter.ini, unless you enjoy having the pretty pictures appearing above everything else.
2) Fill out the fields you want inside the INIs.
3) Boot 'er up, make sure you're in 1920x1200.
4) The Images folder contains M (model) and S (small). It's pretty easy to figure out, having the raw images is the hard part.

I don't know how much more time I'm going to spend on this project. It's probably still buggy, but it works okay on my end.
This is my first Rainmeter skin (it's essentially my attempt to reverse-engineer Enigma), and I've relearned Regex, so I call it a victory.
Now where's my freaking cake?
I bought this at Edward's Luggage: a pocket leather notepad and business card holder, with pen. It is more efficient and portable than any PDA. It costs less than $20 and Edward's Luggage even sells replacement notepads.

FONを購入しますた。
正直、現状ではFONが実用に足るモノだとはちっとも思ってないし、
Power to the people 的な理念に惹かれたワケでも無い。
だけれども、このFONの輪ってのは広がって欲しいなぁ、と思ったんで
まずは自ら参加してみることにした。
利用してみて感じたのは、やっぱりもっともっともっともっと
カフェや公園や駅や空港などに常設されてないと
最低限のインフラとしても到底使い物にならないってこと。
じゃあ、そんな貧弱で使い物にならないから買わないか、というと逆で
まだまだ貧弱だからこそ自ら参加してFON普及の一助たりえたい、と考えた。
FONマップにオレンジのアクセスポイントを１つ灯すことで、
更なる次の新規ユーザーを呼び込めたら良いなぁ、と。
FONの良いところは「誰も損しない」ってことだと思う。
取り立てて得もしないし、損もしない。そんなユルいポジショニングが良い。
とりあえず近所のカフェや居酒屋に設置されたら嬉しいのになぁ。

It's currently not finished. One of the Rainmeter skins still has a few kinks to work out. Mainly a typo and resolution issues. As well as the day of the week problem, the author says he hadn't accounted for the longer names.

Note that you don't frost the lids - they need to remain clear for the solar panel to be as efficient as possible. Next time, I'll be taking all the metal off the jars before I spray them. The frosting comes off the metal really easily.

Spray the frosting on evenly on the outside of the jar (it's ok if it gets inside too). Let go of the nozzle between sprays, and let it dry a bit between applications. I found that several thin layers were better than a thick coating.

I guess I'm officially that guy. The one who joins a group and then posts a screenshot every six months (my last one was in February).
As you can see, nothing much going on here. School has started, and along with it, all my customization endeavors have come to a halt.
Samurize : I installed Samurize after a long time today, just for the sake of spending the day making a pseudo-Enigma taskbar. You know, just so I could do something other than boring English homework.
I didn't realize how boring it was until I actually had to use Family Guy quotes to fill in the space between the Now Playing part and the four icons on the right (and I don't even watch Family Guy).

Few different goodies here. Binder clip on desk for cable organization, and mesh cup holder. I put the lower handle through the cup and stuck it back in place. Another velcro tie secures it to the desk leg. It makes a great place to put pens and such.
Everything is held by zip ties now. I figure easy to move if I need to change settings.
That was how I convinced hubby to let me do this. Now I feel like switching to Velcro ties.

Last week I lost my wallet. While waiting for my replacement
identification and bank cards to arrive I had time to deliberate on my
new wallet. At brunch this morning Wendy and I discussed a DIY money
clip. I came across this clever key/clip over at lifehacker. Hmm, maybe I can do this
with magnets and old circuit boards? I took apart a dead hard drive
that I had dumpster dived last year initially for the magnets, but I
could not take my eyes off of the platters. The magnet would just be
trouble with my ATM card magnetic strips as well as sticking to
everything else around. Using a rivet gun I was able to quickly adhere
two car keys and my AAA card to the platters. I use a additional rivet
so that the platters can slide open and a picture frame hook to clip
them together. It is still a little awkward, but I dig the weight to
strength ratio of the aluminum plates. It also makes for a decent
mirror in a pinch.

I'm from the KISS school of desktops, hence the extra toolbar at the bottom with the ~. This hides all of my not-quite-so frequently used items, without having to go back to the Start menu. As it is, my Quick Lauch bar is plenty full anyone - but the Star icon points to My Downloads.
Last but not least, I hate clicking to see what's in my 'Notification Area', and have it completely expanded. Aside from the work-mandated background noise, I highly recmomend the icon labeled PT: PureText, which can convert any copied text into plain text, from www.stevemiller.net/

Интернет задумывался как канал получения и передачи информации. Но быстро стал каналом коммуникации. От обмена мнениями в ЖЖ до создания «микромиров» в MySpace, Facebook и других социальных сетях.
Несколько лет назад вопрос «Ты есть в ВК?» был нормальным. Сегодня — нет. Конечно, есть! Если не своя, то фейковая страничка, но обязательно есть.
По данным ВЦИОМ, интернетом в России пользуется 66% совершеннолетних (!) граждан, то есть более 76 миллионов человек. 90% из них зарегистрированы в социалках.
Социальные медиа, а также электронная почта и мессенджеры изменили природу общения. В том числе отношение ко лжи.
Все врут!
Доктор Хаус прав: в той или иной мере, но лгут все. Каждый день. Логично было бы предположить, что больше всего врут в интернете. Можно оставаться анонимным, надевать любые маски.
Уловки из социальной инженерии и такие явления, как астротурфинг, — лишнее подтверждение тому, что Сеть полна лжи.
Но если абстрагироваться от сборов средств на спасение мнимого больного ребёнка и сообщений типа «Не спам! Работа не бей лежачего — зарплата $30 000», то вырисовывается абсолютно другая картина.

В интернете нет искренности. Откровенным, честным с самим собой человек может быть только в личном блоге с закрытым ото всех доступом. Для всех остальных будет транслироваться созданный образ, которому человек стремится соответствовать.
Профессор когнитивной психологии и коммуникаций Джефф Хэнкок (Jeff Hancock) провёл исследование честности в социальных медиа. Результат удивляет.
По мнению Хэнкока, человек не врёт без причины. Если он это делает, то чтобы:
защитить себя;
извлечь выгоду.
Но монитор и расстояние, по мнению профессора, не повод для лжи. Почему?
Есть (как минимум) две причины.
Устная речь появилась гораздо раньше письменной и, в отличие от последней, доступна всем. Отсюда исторически сакральное отношение к словам, зафиксированным на бумаге или в другом виде. Соврёшь вслух — половина не заметит, половина скоро забудет. Напишешь неправду — запомнят надолго и смогут доказать.
Социальные сети — это не просто статусы, фотографии и посты «ни о чём». Это люди, которые их создают и читают. Чаще всего — близкие люди. Кем ты будешь в глазах своих родственников, друзей, коллег, если соврёшь? Социальная ответственность и нормы морали повышают уровень правдивости.
Из этого можно сделать вывод, что обычные пользователи в социальных сетях чаще всего всё-таки говорят правду. Гипертрофированную, но правду.

Люди охотно выкладывают в Сеть фотографии и рассказывают про своих мужей и жён, детей (даже новорождённых), домашних питомцев, жилища… Только посмотрите, какой заботливый у меня муж — приготовил мне завтрак. Лайк! А какой милый у меня малыш — вот он какает. Лайк! Я в отличной форме в свои 35 — правда, мне к лицу новое платье? Лайк!
Не могу этого понять. Но, думаю, возможны два варианта. Первый, когда люди используют альбомы в социальных сетях как облачное хранилище. Второй — уже психология. Люди хотят получить положительную оценку окружающих.

Есть такой тип личности — истероидный, или демонстративный. Такие люди склонны к театрализации. Активность в социальных сетях позволяет им постоянно обращать на себя внимание. Они уверены, что обязаны подарить миру свой «богатый внутренний мир».
Лайки и положительные комментарии тешат самолюбие таких людей. Они не терпят конкурентов, поэтому банят всех, кто не восхищается ими.
Истероиды — актёры, любят примерять на себя различные маски. Вот я дрянная девчонка, а вот я хозяюшка / вот я спортсмен, а вот я на крутой тачке.

Вторая причина в личностном дефиците. Неуверенность в себе, отсутствие стабильности, проблемы в личной жизни — всё это человек пытается компенсировать через социальные сети.
Девушку, неуверенную в своей привлекательности и ценности, видно сразу: у неё 1 679 фотографий, множество альбомов, статусы а-ля «Меня трудно найти, но легко потерять» и прочее.
Человека, неустроенного в жизни и зацикленного на успехе, тоже несложно вычислить. В его ленте только хорошие новости, бизнес-советы, рекомендации, как достичь успеха, и так далее. Он считает, что если его мир не идеален, то он недостоин любви.
Пары, демонстрирующие в соцсетях «идиллию», как правило, далеки от неё в жизни. Взаимные искренние чувства не требуют публичности. Напротив, люди стараются скрыть от посторонних то, что им дорого. Если мужчина или женщина постоянно пишет «Я люблю тебя» на стене партнёра вместо того, чтобы говорить это лично, значит, между ними нет контакта. В отношениях им важны не отношения как таковые, а статус «влюблён в такую-то» или «замужем за таким-то».
Таким образом, социальные медиа выдают желаемое за действительное:
у неуверенных в себе повышается самооценка;
лузеры «приближаются» к своей мечте;
а несчастные в любви получают иллюзию крепких отношений.
Социальные сети сильно влияют на самооценку. Человек выстраивает образ, прикладывает усилия для его поддержания, подливает всё новый и новый контент. Разумеется, он ждёт положительной оценки своих стараний. Если человек получает одобрение, самооценка растёт. Если нет ожидаемой реакции — падает.

Признание окружающих, их любовь и внимание в умеренной степени нужны всем. Даже самодостаточный человек улыбнётся, увидев приятный комментарий под своим фото. Но в социальных сетях эта потребность зачастую приобретает гипертрофированный характер. Личности с неустойчивой самооценкой подсаживаются на лайки и комментарии, как на наркотик. Такие люди не любят себя и не видят своей ценности. Гармоничному человеку лайки и комментарии не нужны.
Последствия
К чему приводит подобная откровенность в социальных сетях? К укоренению психологических проблем и всё большему разрушению реальных межличностных связей.
Текст никогда не передаст эмоций межличностного общения. Отсюда недомолвки, недосказанности и другие «недо».

Можно разучиться общаться. Перестать быть самим собой, быть спонтанным. Ведь в Сети у вас всегда есть время на то, чтобы обдумать сообщение, чтобы подстроить его под свой образ.
Но самая большая опасность не в виртуальных ролях как таковых, а в переносе их в реальную жизнь.
Жизнь не влог, её нельзя поставить на паузу или перемотать. Советчики в «Моём мире» не помогут вам помириться с мужем или, к примеру, найти девушку. Пока вы лайкаете и репостите, лишние килограммы остаются при вас, дома сохраняется бардак, а друзья становятся знакомыми.
