Hackintosh Project: Complete

Finally got around to building the Faux-Mac, or as others are calling it, the Hackintosh. In the last few years, much has changed in the initial installation of the Mac OS. While there were many coding updates (i.e. kexts) that needed to be made, currently the process is so streamlined, that even a bumbling technodummy should be able to succeed in building their own Hack.

In comparison to "legit" Macs, the money saved makes the DIY project a formidable option, for you can build a "top of the line" Hack for under 1k. What does "top of the line" mean you ask, well, the Hackintosh would probably rival the top of the line G5.

The preferred method a couple of years ago was using the Lifehacker installation, which was, in it's time, extremely easy and straightforward...though it only worked, for the most part, on one specific Gigabyte motherboard. Currently, the famed method is using the Cartri Mac Edition Bios method. It's actually a pretty brilliant method and does away with a lot of the post installation modifications. It uses a bios flash that allows the end user to install a retail version of OS X...albeit with a custom made bootloader. It's what I used with this install and you can be up and running in a little over an hour.

Questions? Feel free....

Added 11/16/2010: Lifehacker has a new method of installation out. Using iBoot, Multibeast and the retail OS X installation disc.

Check it, here.

So I read something recently about taking your lense off of your camera, tiliting it, and shooting through it. You may see some more experimentation with this in the future.

I built this quite a while before the floppy pen box was featured on Lifehacker. I use it to hold rechargeable batteries. This one features a hinged lid with a working latch, and is constructed only from floppy disks, paper clips, and hot glue.

What's really cool, is that from the desk chair, you can see every screen fully without moving! (my camera wont focus with all the different lighting...)

I should also mention, that my desk area and media center areas have interchangeable wiring running between them. The MacBook can be switched to run on the monitor, TV, or on the projector, and the game systems can switch to run on the TV, projector, or monitor (monitor has component and HDMI inputs).

This view shows the tight confines of my desk. This is unfortunately all I have to work with for space. The built in cabinets are nice, but I do find I run out of space when reviewing articles.

So after gaming hard, I decided to finish up LineEnigma, which I have. Download it here. Almost everything has borders, so this project is done, unless something is to be requested. Besides that, I am starting a new project totally new, getting collaboration with Chaebi69 beacuse of his amazing desktops which have been featured on lifehacker 3 times over. Its been a tiring process of making LineEnigma, and just to think that I had took a long time to add just borders to the configs, while Kaelri made the WHOLE suite from scratch. Its passion. Anyways yea.

Tidied up the cable with some tips via Lifehacker. Added rope lights for better ambient light. Used some can lights I wasn't using with low power bulb behind the monitor. These are controlled by a wireless switch that I used in a previous project.

Pulled some wall art from storage and threw it on the walls.

My father-in-law rigged up a refrigerator-style pantry light with Christmas lights and a Timex watch holder.

When you close the pantry door, the light goes off. When you open it, the light automatically comes on.

See the Lifehacker post on this.

I thought it was fascinating that the google toolbar flagged lifehacker as a potential threat. First because I had not experienced this before and second because I'm surprised lifehacker is not on their safe list.

Here's my two screen desktop. The left is a 19" Gateway LCD and the right is an HP Pavilion zd8000 which has a 17" widescreen.

A view of the back of my monitor. You can see the dioder LEDs (attached with duct tape, of course). Also, in the lower left, is the small USB hub taped to the back of the computer—it's slightly easier to access than the real ports on the back. The switch for the lamp and the dioder LEDs is hidden behind the desk; all I have to do is reach back and feel for a switch (not as hard as it sounds).

My 2nd Monitor's Desktop

Primary (Widescreen) monitor is where applications are run, while this one is for browsing, managing folders, etc.

This is my desk in college that I have assembled to my liking. It has taken me a little over a month to get everything I wanted but in the end I think it came out very nice. I got the idea of the shelf from reading lifehacker and recently I saw a post that was very similar to my setup so I thought I would share.

I made a HDTV antenna for my new TV using coat hangers, screws, old coat hangers, and a OHM transformer. Cost about $15 and I don't have to give my money to Comcast! I'm already getting 720p and 1080i and most stations

A quick demonstration. More info. (Sorry about all the work-related screencasts, friends.)

Room w/ light.

Bedding + Pillows (Nautica, Bed Bath and Beyond)

Before I moved into my room, I knew I could paint it. That in mind, I wanted to find a color scheme that A.) made me feel comfortable, and B.) Looked good. Naturally I referenced design magazines and various other resources, but it turned out incredibly easy to simply find sheets that I liked, and take the colors to my local paint shop to match. The paint was cheap (only living here for ~2 years, so I didn't need the lifetime stuff). By using a laser level, I was able to have the same clean lines all around the room by 'lasering' the line out, then laying painters tape over it. Pretty easy! The furniture from the entire room was picked up over time through Craigslist, which happened to turn out to be a treasure chest of IKEA furniture!! Awesome for a broke college kid like myself...my apologies for the odd lighting and image quality, unfortunately I don't quite have the funding for a nicer camera!

Picture Description

The Windows Vista theme At the bottom is Called Soulglass i will included download links at the bottem. The left bar is part of a rainmeter skin called enigma and it has 3 rss readers and 1 note application. The black transparent behind it is part of an edit from a rainmeter skin called Black Glass as is the entire right bar. And than the dock at the top is rocket dock with a custom theme called black mac i will include a download link in the description. Than lastly the cd art display under soulglass is called ISOME COMPACT there will be a download link below as well as a download link for cd art display which is the program it uses. And the wallpaper is called In flight and it is from Interfacelift.com i will also include a download link below. Than last but certainly not least is RAINMETER what basically made this all possible there will be a link below not that google doesn't work lol.

Reasons Why i Chose This

Well basically i thought i needed something that i can actually use. Im sure all of you have seen all these crazy enigma desktops and the like but honestly how user friendly are those .... not really but i didnt want to focus on just work. I game on my computer as well as other things so i had to do quite a bit of tweakin to get this config working. Such as every object in rainmeter i set to click through and i also removed the check on keep on screen. When you use fullscreen apps that are a smaller resolution than your screen they will move your rainmeter so be carefull with that. Anyway i just think this is one of the most useful desktops ive ever used. Thanks for the comments btw.

Chess pieces I made from nuts and bolts. Still a work in progress. Waiting for the weather to get warm enough to paint the black pieces outside. I may re-do the pawns with caps like the bishop currently has. I am open to suggestion for alternative head pieces for the Queen, and Bishop.. and I am looking for an alternative configuration for the Knight which I generally find dis-satisfying.

My basic concept borrows heavily from a set made by Julia Suits that can be seen at www.flickr.com/photos/jsuits/3340377026/

which I found out about via lifehacker.com

I think I've gotten to the point where I like my Rainmeter Desktop configs. I'm using 4 desktop modification programs.

1. Rainmeter

2. CD Art Display

3. Objectdock

4. Rainlendar

For Rainmeter

1. My thing is being up to date on news so I have a ton o' RSS feeds

459 headlines

450 from standard RSS Feeds, 9 from Google Picture feeds

2. Gmail

3. Time

4. Weather

5. Toolbar

For CD Art Display

Custom skin, simple fade overlay on the album cover using Photoshop

For Objectdock

custom icons using Photoshop

For Rainlendar

Modified Enacao skin

- I have it to where I can click on a single button and launch and deactivate or launch and deactivate all of them at once specific items from Rainmeter in the bottom toolbar. I think someone else had blended Rainmeter with their toolbar and I did something similar by blending my Rainmeter toolbar with my objectdock icons. It works great because i can see everything at once even when I am working on my desktop.

- I also took advantage of the Rainmeter feature that allows you to set the desktop area so I can have a sidebar like area on the left. It allows me to keep my Rainlendar visible at all times as well. All in all, it works out really well.

- I also have it to where I can launch a single monitor desktop or and a dual monitor setup by the click of a button.

For a single monitor I can see all of my feeds at once when I need to by clicking hide and show buttons. If they been up for a while or I've been editing and i want to quickly see my adjustments I have a refresh button that updates the feeds.

This is my minimalist desktop. The aikido wallpaper is to motivate me to check out an aikido school I've been meaning to attend. I usually have a cool WindowBlinds skin going, but I use XP's remote desktop to connect to my pc from work, and graphical themes slow down the connection. I have a tip on there about using the 'Links' folder under Favorites. If you open the Links toolbar on the taskbar, you can use folders to organize files and shortcuts. That's how I keep my desktop clean. I've been meaning to submit that tip to LH, but I keep forgetting.

Finally got Image Magick working :). My first attempt at rotating text.

TRP - Hammer Time.

@Referers from lifehacker.com - Turns out that I'm doing it wrong. Yes, I know the nails are in backward. Do I care, not really since the nail I'm holding in my hand is not even remotely near any wood. I wasn't thinking about being correct, I was thinking how to pull off the theme for that day.

If you want to really know, I was nailing air, not concentrating on not splitting a board, thanks.

I doubt I would have caused any damage anyway.

This is the desktop of the profile I use for freelance transcription and transcript editing. The wallpaper is a modified version of Nick Pan's grid wallpaper. The events and to-do list are from Google Calendar and Remember the Milk, routed through Rainlendar, and the clock is from Bootmaker's Analog Clock skin. The files in the upper grid are current working files, such as audio that needs to be transcribed and scripts that need to be edited. The files in the lower grid are commonly used programs (though I have to say I use Launchy for them more frequently than I use the icons; still, it's nice to have them there when I don't feel like switching from mouse to keyboard). I get into this profile by holding down the shift key while booting up; otherwise, my computer will automatically boot into my default CART desktop.

this is my desktop! ;)
